On the left, a large number of ports are concentrated in front of the panel. The ExpressCard 34/54 slot is covered with a plastic spring cap. Below it is a four-pin connector firewire and two USB ports, one of which is combined with e-SATA. Below you can see the socket for connection local network, connector HDMI And S-VIDEO. The sequence of connectors is interrupted by a grill in the housing Toshiba Satellite A300, through which the heated air is removed by the fan from the case. The grid cells are large, you can see a massive radiator. At the very hinge of the lid there is a classic D-SUB for connecting an external monitor.

IN Lately there is a clear trend towards the transfer of any functional elements from the front panel to other parts of the case. Here, manufacturers meet users halfway - the front panel is not the most convenient place for any ports / buttons / slots. IN Toshiba Satellite A300 there are a lot of interfaces and controls, and therefore it is problematic to place everything on the side panels and I had to move them forward. There is an on/off switch on the left. wireless communication. In the center is a multi-format card reader slot, audio jacks and a volume wheel.

The touchpad is slightly offset to the left of the center Toshiba Satellite A300, but with the same striped ornament that continues the coloration of the wrist pads, only darkened. A cursory glance may not notice this ornament at all - the touchpad will seem completely black. It is made on the same level with the working surface, limited only by a change in tactile characteristics - the touchpad is not glossy, but slightly rough. The keys are in close proximity, large and rounded, with a metallized coating.

Keyboard Toshiba Satellite A300 black and glossy, in style with everything else. It is slightly recessed into the case in such a way that the surface of the keys is just at the level of the pads for the wrists. The keys are a comfortable size, on three sides the edges are slightly beveled and rounded. The layout is standard, Latin and Cyrillic characters are printed in white. Other designations are light blue and very miniature.

Above the keyboard is a glossy black panel, which contains interesting elements. First of all, two large speakers in the corners, covered with transparent plastic elements, are striking. These speakers have an extended sound range, which should have a positive effect on sound quality. Toshiba Satellite A300. A similar sound system can be observed on the famous Toshiba Qosmio, which traditionally have a good sound. In the center of the panel is a row of functional elements. Not far from the left speaker, you can see a round button on / off the laptop. To the right is a number of touch controls that perform multimedia functions: turn the sound on / off, control the operation of the players. Next to the right speaker, you can see the inscription "harman / kardon", indicating that the speakers belong to a famous brand in the world of acoustic systems.

The indication of the operating modes of the keyboard is also interesting. The green LED reflecting the CapsLock mode is built right into the key of the same name. The ScrollLock and NumberLock mode indicators are located under the corresponding keys and are also green.

The lid is attached to the body on one wide hinge. The closing mechanism is spring-loaded, without any locks. Glossy display finish Toshiba Satellite A300, in our opinion, for the scope of the laptop is best suited: the contrast is higher than that of matte counterparts. And the matte screen would stand out from the overall glossy design. When working indoors with bright lighting or outdoors, you will need to find a comfortable place so that the screen does not glare. Soft pads are placed along the perimeter of the display frame to soften contact with the case. At the top center, on a slightly protruding platform, is a webcam. On the right you can see the hole of the built-in microphone. Below, under the screen, the company logo is applied in light letters.

Design Toshiba Satellite A300 stylish, you can even call it glamorous: black glossy surfaces are interspersed with silver and metallic elements. Looks nice and very harmonious. The layout of interfaces and controls may not be ideal, a little cramped in some places, especially on the left, but with such a variety, you can turn a blind eye to this.

Toshiba Satellite A300 | Ergonomics and user experience

Build quality is good: case Toshiba Satellite A300 does not creak anywhere, the work surface and the keyboard do not bend when pressed. The materials are not expensive, but this is not surprising for this price niche. You should not expect practicality from an absolutely glossy laptop: it gets dirty very quickly. The supplied napkin will come in handy, no doubt, and you will have to use it often.

Touchpad Toshiba Satellite A300 pleasant to use, accurate with moderate sensitivity. The keys are large and comfortable, but the metallic coating is a little confusing: how long will it last. The operating experience of such elements suggests that over time this coating will be erased and the appearance will suffer from this. The keyboard may look beautiful due to the glossiness, but it sticks to slightly sweaty hands. And this causes a slight feeling of discomfort. But in general, the quality is acceptable: there are no false positives, the key travel is soft with a clear fixation of positions.

On the left, the interfaces are very cramped, especially those under the ExpressCard slot. If for firewire plugs are very tiny, then USB flash drives are very wide. The location of the audio connectors in front also cannot be called a good solution, and the card reader slot is devoid of a plug.

Acoustic system Toshiba Satellite A300 made us happy. Of course, it is far from external systems, but for an integrated system, the sound quality is very good. Low frequencies are weakly expressed, but the averages are audible more distinctly than on many multimedia laptops. When playing music, the membranes vibrate very effectively. The volume level is good, however, the editors do not recommend setting the maximum value so as not to damage the speakers.

Let Toshiba Satellite A300 in operation, not very practical, gets dirty, but this is the price that some people are willing to pay for a pleasant appearance. Well, functionality is great. I really liked the touch control panel and the built-in speaker system.

Toshiba Satellite A300 | Performance Testing

Before us is a multimedia laptop, which should be able to solve a wide range of user tasks. And therefore, its performance should be at a good level. According to the specifications, everything is very good: a dual-core microprocessor, a large amount of memory, a discrete graphics card should allow you to listen to music and watch movies, "surf" the Web and play. Let's see how things really are. For results, we used standard 3DMark benchmarks for gaming performance and PCMark for general user scenarios. Well, according to tradition, we separately measured the performance of the hard drive. All results are presented in the graphs below.

Very even results. The first diagram shows that all components of the system have decent performance, while the second one demonstrates the good performance of the laptop in user scenarios. Let's see how Toshiba Satellite A300 show up in games.

The results are very good. You can play on this machine without problems. It is likely that even modern games will start with sparing settings at an acceptable frame rate. Let's look at the bottleneck performance modern computers- hard drive.

Performance is typical for notebook drives with a spindle speed of 5400 rpm. During testing with synthetic tests, we traditionally notice strange results on cached operations. Here and now the speed of the cached record "dipped". However, there is no doubt that in real scenarios this will not affect performance.

Based on the test results, it can be said that Toshiba Satellite A300 confidently cope with all user tasks. Unless it's possible to get a comfortable FPS level on modern "heavy" games, but there shouldn't be any problems with less resource-intensive games.

Toshiba Satellite A300 | Temperature and time battery life

The efficiency of the cooling system is an important parameter. Components subjected to constant overheating will have a shorter service life. Let's see how hot it is inside Toshiba Satellite A300. We subjected the main components to the maximum load and followed the temperature dynamics. Take a look at the chart below.

When testing universal home laptops, as they say, "mainstream", there is always an interesting problem. On the one hand, the case and everything connected with it are the same for the entire line. Those. once having examined the case, you can describe your impressions and stop there.

On the other hand, the configurations differ very significantly, and this has a serious impact on positioning. Firstly, different platforms (AMD or Intel) can be used in the same case. Secondly, the same model in different configurations can be oriented both to the demanding gamer and to the simplest application of "texts and the Internet", or even to work in the field of small business. Accordingly, the choice of configuration (platform, processor, video solution, HDD etc.) is very wide, and, depending on the filling, the laptop will be focused on performing completely different tasks. However, it will still be one model!

Accordingly, with the same body, the performance different models, including such indicators as heating and noise, will be seriously different. As a result, it turns out that in order to adequately describe the functionality of the entire line, it is necessary to test 3-4 models of different configurations (which are still constantly changing), and it must be tested simultaneously (since there will be no independent material for each configuration, there is too little new information).

Finally, from functionality specific model the price also depends a lot. The difference can be almost double! By the way, these considerations should be kept in mind when reading reviews of almost all laptops, not only our today's guest, Toshiba A300. If you like the case, but don't need such a powerful configuration, it's worth checking out, the manufacturer's arsenal almost certainly has models with more modest characteristics, but at much more affordable prices.

Well, let's now look at our today's guest - a Toshiba Satellite A300 laptop with a fairly powerful configuration.

Frame

As we already noted in the P300 review, in new series Toshiba has again redesigned the design. The color scheme has changed, instead of blue and light silver, laptops are now black with different shades of silver gray. Secondly, the entire laptop is now glossy, even the keyboard. This is really a new stylistic solution, however, it has both pluses and minuses. The laptop looks very elegant, it is pleasant to look at it (it makes a particularly strong impression in a store where the light is very bright). But at the same time, the case is very easily soiled, any dirt is visible on it (for example, after I moved it from place to place a couple of times, the entire cover turned out to be covered with fingerprints, and the laptop looked untidy). In addition, all scratches and scuffs will be visible on it. In general, you should be careful when wearing the A300, the laptop gets dirty very quickly. And here it applies to the keyboard panel, and to the keyboard itself.

The body is rectangular, with straight sides and very rounded corners. There are no sharp corners at all. The lid and body are stylistically separate, they don't look together when closed. In addition, the corners of both the lid and the body are smoothed, i.e. there is a huge gap between them. Most likely, the designers were guided by the fact that most of the time the laptop will stand on the table with open lid, i.e. more important is how it will look open, not closed.

By the way, due to this slot it is very convenient to open the lid - it is easy to take the corner with your fingers. The lid does not have a latch, it is held only by the rigidity of the hinges. The lid is made on l-shaped hinges, so it does not rise up, but leans back, and the matrix during operation is lower than usual for laptops.

At first I didn't like this style (I never got used to the P300, for example), but after I worked with the A300 for a while and got used to it, the overall impression of the laptop's design became very positive. Both closed (thanks to the design of the lid) and open laptop on the table looks very nice. By the way, I really liked the screen frame: firstly, it is in itself a beautiful shade, and secondly, it is matte (as it turned out during testing, the glossy shiny frame of the matrix distracts from the screen very much).

Ergonomically, I also liked the laptop. Due to the fact that the matrix leans back, there is no space for connectors on the rear panel, respectively, they are all located on the side faces. By the way, please note that there is a marking above the connectors on the keyboard panel, i.e. you can insert the plug by touch - you can see where this or that connector is located. It is very convenient at work!

Front located infrared port(for remote remote control), multi-format card reader (it is convenient to use here), audio jacks (inconvenient - the plug sticks out forward and the cable dangles in front of the laptop. You can put on the plug with a wide sleeve).

On the left side there is an analog output to an external monitor, then there is an exhaust ventilation grill, an S-Video output, next to it is a digital HDMI output (by the way, there are configurations without it), next is a wired network connector, an eSATA port, a USB port and firewire. Above them is an Expresscard slot (if a card with a protruding part is inserted there, you won't get to the ports below).

On the right side there are two USB ports, a modem connector, an optical drive, a power connector, a Kensington lock port.

In general, the presence and location of ports is at a good level, there are four USB ports, HDMI and S-Video ports. The only significant remark is that the audio connectors are located on the front side, which can interfere with work.

Specifications and test results

Let's take a look at the specifications of the model we were given for testing, the A300-1OG. Please note that in the middle is the letter "O", not zero. Here is a link to the models on the Russian site.

The configuration is quite powerful, especially for a general purpose home laptop. The processor is very good, there is a lot of RAM (the maximum amount for a 32-bit system, it makes no sense to put more memory), a modern video adapter, a 320 gigabyte hard drive.

Before proceeding to the tests, let's evaluate the formal indicators of the main components.

Detailed information about the graphics subsystem:

Testing

First, as usual, we measure the integrated performance of the system in PCMark 05 and Vantage, 3DMark05 (in brackets - the rating of the processor, memory, graphics and disk), 3Dmark06 (in brackets are the results of subtests SM2.0, HDR / SM3, CPU), Cinebench (Performance test 1 core/2 cores/work in OpenGL). In addition, we measured the time for calculating mathematical parameters in the SuperPi wPrime programs.

Separately, it is worth showing the results of PCMark Vantage by subsystems. They help to understand the contribution to the overall performance of various components.

Here are the results of the standard Windows Vista benchmark. It allows you to fairly adequately assess the approximate performance of the system. In addition, any user can compare the results of his system with the one under test without installing any additional programs into the system.

The weakest component was "Graphics for games", this parameter shows the rating of the graphics subsystem as a whole.

Temperature regime

As you can see, the cooling system did its job well, the temperature did not rise very much. For comparison, is the temperature of the system at rest.

Subjectively, the laptop is warm, palm rests warm up to 32-33 degrees. The exhaust at idle is 36 degrees, under medium load is 47, at maximum performance it is 54 degrees.

CPU, memory and hard drive testing

Processor performance is measured in seven Everest benchmarks.

Memory subsystem performance

Hard drive testing

The disk subsystem was tested separately.

In general, the disk is quite fast, although the access time could be less.

Testing in games

Gaming tests load all subsystems of the laptop and allow you to determine the maximum performance. In addition, games are the very real applications for which the laptop is bought, that is, users will be able to determine whether the X200-21U will give the desired level of performance in games or not.

Toshiba Satellite
Crysis DEMO10,43
Battlefield 2 DEMO121.5 fps
Unreal Tournament 3 DEMO57,92
Quake 4 DEMO + patch 1.369.6 fps
CounterStrike Source162
F.E.A.R.19

With the exception of Crysis, which is heavily loaded even on desktop systems, all games work with high speed. If you do not chase the latest releases, the performance of the tested laptop is more than enough.

Battery life

Testing was carried out in three modes: minimum load mode (reading text from the screen), while watching a movie and with a load on all subsystems. The tests were carried out in Windows Vista, power saving settings were set to the minimum in the first test, to adaptive values in the second, and to the maximum in the third. Screen brightness is always set to maximum.

The battery capacity was 94576 mWh.

The laptop that we tested had a bad battery (it was a sample for tests), this can even be seen from the discharge graph - after the battery reached the 30% charge level, there was a sharp decline. Therefore, the results do not reflect the real picture of battery life. It seems to me that with a working battery, the A300 should work somewhere 25-30% more. During testing, it was not possible to access another laptop.

Subjective testing

Keyboard

The keyboard of the A300 has some peculiarities in use. When typing, the keyboard left a good impression, the keystrokes are quite clear and elastic. The keyboard is noisy, while typing the keys hit the substrate.

The layout used, as I have repeatedly said, is unsuccessful. The left shift is made short, next to it is another useless backslash. Because of this, typing is quite difficult, especially if you switched from a keyboard that does not have such a layout - instead of shift, you constantly hit this key. You can get used to it, but typing is still uncomfortable, and it is difficult to switch to other keyboards and back.

The second disadvantage is that the glossy keys are slippery, fingers are unstable when typing, often slip off the key. When you get used to the keyboard, this drawback almost disappears, but still.

Of the pluses, it is worth noting the ctrl located in the corner. Editing is quite convenient, the cursor is convenient to use, del is located in the corner and is easy to find by touch, the cursor shortcut keys are located in a vertical column.

The touchpad is made flush with the body, the color of the touchpad is darker than that of the palm rests, but it is also made in stripes. The touchpad is built well. The traditional two touchpad buttons are made huge here and stand out sharply in the body. It does not bring practical benefits, but it looks interesting.

Additional keys and indicators

The indicators of the new models glow white and are located under the touchpad buttons. When the laptop is turned off, the indicators are not visible. There are four indicators in total - network connection, operation, battery status and access to the hard drive. I would like to immediately see the indicator of wireless interfaces, it is located in an inconvenient place - on the front beveled edge, next to the switch. The only way to see it is to bend over hard and look under the laptop (well, or lift the front of the laptop).

In working condition, the strip above the touchpad is illuminated with white light and the multimedia player buttons located above the keyboard are lit. If you are watching a movie in the dark, finding the main controls is easy and convenient. In case the backlight is annoying (in the dark it can distract from the screen), there is a special button to disable this backlight.

Screen and sound

Toshiba has a mirror matrix with a resolution of 1440x900 pixels. From the point of view of work, the matrix is convenient in terms of size / resolution - the characters are of sufficient size, you can read texts (including on web pages) without problems.

Mirror matrix. This makes the picture brighter and richer in multimedia applications, but the matrix glare is very strong. It reflects everything around, i.e. in dark scenes in movies and games, your own reflection may be brighter and more distinct than the image on the screen. In some situations, watching a movie is simply difficult.

The A300 uses sound developed by Harman-Kardon. The sound is good for a laptop, you can work without problems with the built-in acoustics. It seemed to me that the A300 has a rather specific transmission, it plays mainly mid frequencies and is somehow a little boomy. This was also noted by colleagues who heard how the laptop plays music. But in general, the level of acoustics is good.

Positioning and Conclusions

A300 is a versatile home laptop aimed at a wide audience. In principle, it has everything to satisfy the needs of the average user - an attractive appearance, a fairly good level of performance, good opportunities for working with video and sound on their own, and a convenient set of "home" interfaces, including HDMI, a comfortable keyboard, and in general good ergonomics.

It is also worth remembering that in the A300 line there are a lot of different configurations, focused both on gaming and multimedia applications, and on work. Accordingly, the price of the model also changes.

Today, few people can be surprised by the internal architecture of modern laptop computers: everything is quite the same type, the vast majority of laptops are built on the same Intel platform. And if you don’t roam much on the performance field, then the developers were forced to switch towards giving more external brightness and expressiveness to their products in order to be able to at least visually stand out from the competition. Thus, the green light was lit before the revelry of design ideas, which, as practice shows, knows no boundaries.

In the race for the most attractive exterior, Toshiba has managed to show the highest aerobatics of skill, laying all competitors on the shoulder blades and put an end to the "glossy fad". The new Satellite series laptops not only have a glossy lid and wrist pad, they even have a polished keyboard. Laptops look outrageously beautiful, and the word “disgrace” is also not without reason. Glossy surfaces are an excellent dust collector and eternal fingerprints. But you can't go anywhere, you have to pay for beauty - even in the form of regular wiping the laptop with a special microfiber cloth.

Toshiba Satellite A300: appearance

Today in our laboratory - one of the 15-inch representatives of the new "satellites", which replaced the popular A200 series, Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ.

Model A300-1JJ is a relative middle peasant in the A300 series. The laptop is built on the old Napa Centrino platform (not even Refresh), and its processor, an Intel Core 2 Duo T5750, is based on the Merom core. If we talk about the entire A300 line, then the range of processors installed in it extends from Intel Pentium Dual-Core up to Core 2 Duo on Penryn core. There is also a whole subgroup of laptops with the letter “D” at the end, where AMD stuffing is used. In terms of the video subsystem, Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ is, on the contrary, one of the most powerful models in the A300 line, it accounted for the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 with 512 MB of hardware video memory. In other models of the Toshiba series, both the weaker discrete graphics solutions ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 are installed, and it is completely limited to the integrated Intel GMA X3100 or 4500M. Our laptop has one 2 GB memory module, but there are also models with a 1 + 2 GB RAM scheme. In addition, some of the "satellites" of the A300 series are equipped with two hard drives(in our case, there are two compartments, but the second one is free), and they are also equipped with 802.11n Wi-Fi adapters (in our model, the slower 802.11a/b/g). Otherwise, all models in the line are very close.

Packaging, delivery set and a little about the software

Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ is packaged in a small white cardboard box with a red tick on the edge, which is typical for all "satellites". The name and series are printed on a sticker on the side.

Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ: packing box

The delivery package of the laptop, as usual with Toshiba, is rather modest - minus the laptop itself, the following was found in the box: a 4000 mAh battery (6-cell), an adapter alternating current manufactured by Delta Electronics with power cable, laptop international limited warranty, brief and complete guide user guide in Russian, a safety and convenience guide, and several loose brochures on separate sheets.

Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ: scope of delivery

Attached software on the contrary, a lot. First, as is the case on almost all portable machines, the Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ has a pre-installed licensed Windows Vista Home Premium. In case of problems with the operating system, the manufacturer offers to create a set of two system recovery DVDs using the Toshiba Recovery Disc Creator utility, the shortcut of which is located on the desktop, and a reminder of this pops up after each boot - as long as you use such a set don't create. It is a pity that the user has to do this procedure on his own, it is much more pleasant to find ready-made Recovery disks immediately in the delivery kit. The recovery process itself takes relatively little time.

Toshiba Recovery Disc Creator

The proprietary Toshiba Assist shell is a small control center that collects frequently used system utilities. The program has four tabs: "Connection", "Security", "Protection and correction" and "Optimization".

Toshiba Assist Utility

The first tab provides access to the ConfigFree (Connectivity Doctor) utility and Bluetooth connection settings. Control program network connections ConfigFree allows you to find nearby wireless connections: Hotspots WiFi access And Bluetooth devices. The interface of this utility at the time of the search takes the form of a round radar screen. In addition, the program can detect the connection to a network cable and automatically turn off the power of the Wi-Fi card in order to save power consumption. For solutions possible problems with network connections, ConfigFree has a Connectivity Doctor section that allows you to check the settings of all network devices and fix the problems that have arisen.

ConfigFree (Connectivity Doctor)

In the "Security" section, two passwords are set - "Supervisor Password" and "User Password".

The "Protection and Correction" tab is represented by one utility - "PC Diagnostic Tools". The program gives all the main characteristics of the laptop, and also provides the ability to diagnose individual devices.

And the last window, "Optimization", contains a lot of utilities focused on working with individual components of a portable computer. Of the most interesting, one can single out the CD / DVD Drive Acoustic Silencer application, which allows you to adjust the noise level of the optical drive by limiting the maximum speed of rotation of its spindle

CD/DVD Drive Acoustic Silencer Utility

The “Zooming Utility” utility nested in the “Optimization” section allows using hot keys (“Fn” and “1” or “2”) to increase or decrease the image in supported programs, including Internet Explorer, Microsoft office, Windows Media Player, Adobe Acrobat.

To work with the built-in webcam, the manufacturer applies a program with the intuitive name "Web Camera". The application is launched by hovering the cursor over the middle of the left edge of the display (where the control panel is hidden by default) or by pressing the Alt and F7 keys together.

Web Camera Toolbar

The application allows you to take photos, shoot videos (with sound) and record sound separately. The process of video and audio recording is indicated by a blinking red dot on the corresponding icon.

Web Camera: Photographing and Recording

Photos are viewed in a separate window with the ability to adjust the image scale. Image editing is not available.

Web Camera: Photo Viewer

Playback of captured video and audio is performed by two similar built-in players. In the latter case, the image is missing, instead of the picture, a drawn speaker is placed in the center of the screen.

Web Camera: video and sound playback

The "Effects" tab allows you to impose frames on the image and several options for fixing the desktop when working with the camera. All these effects look much more modest than in the pre-installed ArcSoft WebCam Companion programs on Sony laptops or LifeFrame on ASUS. Probably, Toshiba is aimed at serious work. :o)

Web Camera Effects

The manufacturer also includes another program for the webcam - Toshiba Face Recognition. The utility creates a unique password based on the basic features of the user's face and provides a quick login.

Toshiba Face Recognition

Specially for working with graphic files, the Google Picasa2 program is attached.

Google Picasa2

The application automatically determines the location of photos, sorts them into albums, sorting them by date with folder names for ease of navigation, also allows you to edit images (remove red-eye, change color characteristics, apply various effects, etc.), burn discs, print files, create a web -Albums and share pictures via e-mail.

Google Picasa2: Image Editing

The following program, "Ulead DVD MovieFactory for TOSHIBA", is for editing and burning DVD video material. It allows you to record video from any source and then edit it, add captions or background music. The program also allows you to create menus using the suggested styles or your own design.

Ulead DVD MovieFactory for TOSHIBA

In addition to the above, the capabilities of Ulead DVD MovieFactory are extended by a utility for printing on discs that supports LabelFlash technology. This program has tools for adding inscriptions and drawings to the disc. True, in our case, the relevance of this idea is zero - the drive in the A300-1JJ does not support LabelFlash technology.

Ulead Label@Ones

In addition to the Ulead DVD MovieFactory, the laptop has Windows program Movie Maker for creating and editing digital video recordings with the ability to add various video and audio effects, titles, and more.

Windows Movie Maker

To burn audio discs, data discs and create backups the manufacturer applies the Toshiba Disc Creator program.

Toshiba Disc Creator

To watch movies and other video materials, a branded Toshiba Dvd Player is supplied with the laptop, the interface of which is very simple and easy to use.

Toshiba Dvd Player

And considering that the pre-installed Windows Vista Home Premium includes Windows Media Center - a shell for working with media files that allows you to view photos and movies, listen to music, work with a radio and TV tuner, then we have a great addition to the proprietary viewer. True, you won't be able to enjoy watching TV programs - due to the lack of a built-in TV tuner.

Windows Media Center

Turning to applications for working with text, we first note the free Adobe Reader 8.1.0, a utility for working with files in PDF format.

To work with documents and spreadsheets, Toshiba uses Microsoft package Works 9.0, focused, unlike MS Office, exclusively on home use. The package includes text editor(less functional than MS Word, but more than WordPad), spreadsheet, database, calendar and PowerPoint presentation viewer.

Microsoft Works

As an addition to Works, the manufacturer provides a full suite of Microsoft Office 2007, but only with a 60-day trial license. At the end of the specified period, you will either have to say goodbye to Office or buy a full product key from Microsoft.

Microsoft Office 2007 with 60 days license

As a security package, the manufacturer offers McAfee Internet Security Suite 2008 - Toshiba Edition. The license, however, is valid for only 30 days - so after a month, the user will either have to renew the license at their own expense, or abandon McAfee Internet Security Suite.

Well, at the end of the software review, it remains to mention two more Google programs displayed on the desktop with the corresponding icons: Earth And Desktop. Both of them are relevant only when the laptop is connected to the Internet. The first is a geographical program for viewing maps, satellite images, landscape and buildings throughout the Earth, as well as the starry sky - beyond. Google Desktop is an assistant in finding files and applications on your computer, plus an additional sidebar with "gadgets" (it should be noted that both of these can be organized using your own Windows Tools Vista).

Exterior: design and ergonomics

The body of the Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ looks very impressive, and such an exterior cannot be called too much - the appearance of a portable computer is quite within the reasonable. Often applied under a layer of gloss, metallic stripes, thickening from the edges to the middle of the cover, do their best to make fingerprints, dust and scratches less noticeable. However, even in such a non-standard way it is not completely possible to hide them, at some angles it is better not to look at the laptop at all, so as not to spoil the impression of glossy magnificence. Therefore, whatever one may say, the owner of the Toshiba Satellite A300 will have to get a special cloth for regular wiping of shiny surfaces - and it will often be necessary to resort to its help.

The body lines of the new "satellite" vaguely resemble those of the A200 series, but this is more of a visual deception. The base now does not have strongly pronounced roundings on the front and back sides, and the lid does not even try to bend under the contours of the bottom, in the A300 it is actually even. A significant disadvantage of the cover is its fragility: not only does it bend under light pressure, but traces of this are visible even on the laptop screen. Traditionally for the vast majority of portable computers labeled Toshiba Satellite, the front end of the base has a built-in 5-in-1 card reader that supports Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, Multi Media Card, Secure Digital and xD-Picture Card standards, a connector for connecting microphone, headphone jack, combined with an optical digital S / PDIF output, and a volume wheel. The latter, by the way, has no rotation limit and changes the volume of the speakers through windows settings, which comes out much smoother than using conventional buttons on other models. However, only the minimum volume can be determined by ear, but whether you have turned up the maximum can only be shown by the sound console of the OS.

To the left of the listed connectors, completely apart, there is a wireless interface switch together with an activity indicator.

Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ: wireless interface slider

Unlike predecessor, the display lock of the Toshiba Satellite A300 has been eliminated, holding the lid in the lowered or raised state by a single fairly tight hinge, which occupies a hefty share of the back of the base. The hinge loop is a continuation of the frame around the screen, due to which the display, when the laptop is fully opened, goes beyond the bottom of the case and completely covers the entire back side of the base, preventing engineers from placing a single connector on it. The lid fastening mechanism used allows you to open the laptop only at an angle that is noticeably less than 180 degrees.

Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ: opening angle

Lifting the lid, we observe inside the complete consonance with the external decoration of the portable computer. According to the ornament on the lid, the base is painted with textured stripes, thickening towards the middle, and together with the keyboard has a glossy finish. When you press the backing under the wrists, it turns out that the plastic "breathes", and at the junction of the glossy and bottom parts of the base it also crackles a little. The latter would like to be attributed to the flaws of a particular instance. Further, the chrome touchpad buttons and a gray matte (which, it is worth noting, practical) frame around the screen are knocked out of the integrity of the picture.

Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ: open

Even on the 1.3-megapixel webcam block, which is deprived of the ability to rotate and noticeably protrudes beyond the frame, there are two rubber pads that protect the glass cover of the device when the lid is lowered. As you might guess, the direction of the “look” of the eye directly depends on the angle of the lid. When the camera is active, a tiny blue indicator lights up next to the eye. Slightly to the right of the block, a hole for the built-in mono microphone is drilled.

Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ: webcam and microphone

Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ is equipped with a widescreen (16:10 aspect ratio, WXGA) 15.4-inch matrix with a working resolution of 1280x800 pixels. Visually, the viewing angles do not seem large even horizontally. It's even worse vertically: in order to get a more or less uniform picture, you have to play with the angle of the display: either the top of the picture goes negative, or the bottom loses contrast and becomes brighter. In addition, the screen has a "glass" coating, which, in addition to all of the above, will force the user to select favorable lighting - otherwise the surface will glare. There are no complaints about the brightness, the adjustment levels are quite enough - 8, even the lowest ones allow you to clearly see what is happening on the screen.

The keyboard of the new "satellite" is a separate story. Externally, the input device is similar to those of other Satellites, the only thing is that all 87 keys have a glossy finish. Needless to say, the design of the laptop required such a solution, the standard matte keyboard is completely out of place here, but if you look from the point of view of practicality, you can find several design flaws at once. Firstly, no matter how my hands are before starting work, the buttons will still instantly be covered with fingerprints, creating a visually not the most rosy picture. And secondly, the complete absence of roughness can lead to slipping of the fingers, especially if the pads are wet. Otherwise, there is nothing to complain about, the mechanical properties of the keyboard are at their best: pressing the keys is soft and silent, there is no backlash (as far as it can be determined by sliding a finger over the button), the actuation moment is clearly felt. As is typical for Toshiba laptops, the green mode activity light cap lock (upper case) is built directly into the key itself. "Enter" classic L-shaped. The cursor block is located below the line of the main keyboard, which reduces the risk of accidentally pressing the "arrows". No tricks with the location of "Fn" - the lower left corner is legally occupied by "Ctrl" with an increased width of the button. There is a “conditional” (combined with the main) numeric keypad (turning on “Num Lock” is done by pressing “Fn” and “F11” together, after which the corresponding indicator under the “F11” key lights up) and two buttons Microsoft Windows. If you press "Fn" and "F10" together, then the same keys on which the "virtual" numeric keypad is located can be used to control the cursor. The corresponding indicator under the "F10" button indicates the activity of the function.

"Home", "Page Up", "Page Down" and "End" are lined up on the right in a vertical row. The function keys are separated from the main keyboard by a black insert (on which, in fact, the above-mentioned indicators for using the cursor control mode and the numeric character input mode are located), are significantly reduced in size and divided into five groups: a separate "Esc", "F1" - "F4 ”, “F5” - “F8”, “F9” - “F12” and four more buttons (“Print Screen”, “Pause”, “Insert” and “Delete”). Russian and Latin letters are printed in white, the designations on the keys, which are also used as a numeric keypad and cursor control buttons, are drawn in gray with a smaller size.

Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ: keyboard

The touchpad of the Toshiba Satellite A300 is a powerful breakthrough over the "naughty" predecessors on the old "satellites". The touchpad is flush with the surface of the base, the striped pattern of which continues well on it. The touchpad is devoid of gloss, the surface of the panel has a slight roughness, so you can easily determine by touch the moment when the finger left it. Responsiveness to touch is excellent. At the top, instead of two texture stripes, a white touchpad backlight strip is built into its entire width. At the base of the panel, with a total width slightly larger than itself, there are two "mouse" keys in a special recess. Buttons of an unusual rounded shape with a chrome finish. Of course, the first touch of the keys will imprint your fingerprint on them. Beautiful, but too marco. Pressing is quite tight, the moment of operation is accompanied by a characteristic click. There are no graphical selections of horizontal and vertical scroll zones, however, if you swipe your finger along the corresponding edges of the touchpad, it turns out that they are. In addition, in some models of the Satellite A300, a fingerprint reader is installed between the touchpad keys (in our case, it was absent).

Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ: touchpad

Directly below the "mouse" keys are the main status indicators, illuminated by white LEDs. In the inactive state, the symbols are almost impossible to detect, they merge with the black surface of the base. The lowered top cover only at certain angles (if you hang over the laptop) slightly interferes with their visibility. As part of the status indicators (from left to right):

Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ: Status LEDs

Mains power indicator (lights up when the laptop is connected to the power supply);
Power indicator (glows white when the laptop is turned on, blinks orange when the laptop goes to sleep, off when the computer is turned off);
Battery indicator (blinks orange when the battery is low, glows orange when the battery is charging; glows white - the battery is fully charged and the computer is connected to the power supply, off - in all other cases);
Activity indicator (shows that the computer is accessing storage devices: hard drive or optical drive, lights up at the moment of access);
Indicator of access to the card reader.

Also in the A300 model, when the laptop is turned on, the “Satellite” series logo is highlighted.

Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ: illuminated series logo

Say what you like, but the long-term cooperation with Harman Kardon is bearing fruit. Following the expensive Toshiba models, branded acoustics began to appear in laptops at a lower price level. Toshiba Satellite A300 comes with a pair of matching speakers. The sound quality is definitely higher than usual for this segment of laptops.

Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ: stereo speakers

The remaining area between the speakers is occupied by a block of touch-sensitive multimedia keys and a laptop power button. When the laptop is turned on, all of them are highlighted with white LEDs, at the moment of operation they go out for a second. In case all this illumination interferes with work, the backlighting of all keys can be turned off with a special button, the “Satellite” logo and the strip above touch panel. The composition of the keys above the keyboard includes (from left to right):

Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ: multimedia keys

Laptop power button;
Backlight off key;
Multimedia player launch key (CD/DVD button);
Play/Pause key;
Playback stop key;
Key for selecting the previous track;
Key for selecting the next track.

The media player start button works even when the laptop is turned off: the operating system is loaded first, followed by the Windows Media Player window. Fortunately, the touch keys only respond to the touch of your finger, so when you wipe the laptop with a tissue, you don't have to worry that it will suddenly turn on.

The number and arrangement of connectors is definitely borrowed from predecessor, only they look more neat due to the new design.

The following components are placed on the left end of the Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ (from left to right):

Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ: left side view

15-pin D-Sub connector for connecting an external monitor;
TV-Out port (S-video), provides connection to a TV;
Connector for connecting a laptop to a local network (LAN port RJ-45);
Two USB ports;
26-pin ExpressCard 34/54;
4-pin IEEE1394 (FireWire) port.

On the opposite side of the laptop is the following:

Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ: right side view

Two USB ports;
Connector for connecting a modem to a telephone line (RJ-11);
Drive unit optical discs, with an activity indicator, a CD eject button and an emergency opening located on it;
Connector for power supply connection;
Kensington lock port (allows you to secure your laptop with Kensington-compatible security products).

All four available USB ports on the laptop support the USB Sleep and Charge feature, which is enabled using the Toshiba HWSetup utility. This function allows you to charge all kinds of devices such as players and phones from a USB port even when the laptop is turned off. Some models of Toshiba Satellite A300 may not have this option, you can determine its presence by marking in the form of a lightning bolt above the port itself. And if we are already talking about the symbols above the ports, then the icons corresponding to the connectors are placed on the edge of the visible part of the base of the laptop. The phenomenon is rare, but, I must say, convenient. Unfortunately, both right USB ports are located too close to the front of the laptop (and, accordingly, to the user), so when using a wired mouse, the cord will certainly get tangled under your hands.

There are no connectors on the back of the laptop, as mentioned earlier, due to the specific design of the hinge loop.

Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ: rear view

The laptop comes with a 4000mAh (6-cell) battery rated at 10.8V, which translates to 43Wh when converted to watt-hours.

Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ: Battery

At the bottom of the laptop are the covers for the RAM modules and two hard drives, block battery with two latches (manual and spring) and stickers with model data and serial number operating system. Use the second compartment hard drive it is unlikely to succeed on its own: there is a place to put the HDD, but the interface and power supply are not brought out to the compartment.

Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ: bottom

The RAM compartment has two slots, one of which is occupied by a 2048 MB module, the second is free.

Accordingly, if you want to increase the amount of laptop memory, it will be enough to purchase a second module.

Interior: interior content

Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ is based on dual-core processor Intel Core 2 Duo rated T5750, 2.00 GHz, based on the Merom core manufactured by technological process 65 nm and having a 2 MB L2 cache combined for two cores.

It differs from older processors based on the Merom core (T7xxx series) by a lower FSB frequency (667 MHz versus 800 MHz), as well as the lack of support for Intel VT virtualization technology, which, however, does not matter for most users, only the difference in price is noticeable. A little more significant is the lack of FSB Frequency Switching technology in the T5750, which allows you to reduce not only its multiplier, but also the system bus frequency during processor idle, thereby saving energy.

Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 in two test power modes

The Merom processor supports not only the Enhanced Intel SpeedStep (EIST) energy-saving technology, which allows you to reduce the multiplier and, accordingly, the operating frequency during idle times, but also the Dynamic Power Coordination technology, which allows you to control the power consumption of each of the two cores independently of each other, up to the confluence one of them into the Deep Sleep state. In addition, the Dynamic Cache Sizing technology (dynamic change in the size of the cache memory) is used, which disables idle cache blocks - with the same goal of reducing power consumption. There is also Intel Dynamic Acceleration technology, focused on single-threaded environments, when only one core is involved and the processor's power consumption is low - the energy reserve is used to increase the frequency of the running core, thereby realizing a kind of "proprietary" overclocking.

The chipset used in the laptop is Intel Crestline PM965, which has an external PCI Express x16 bus for connecting a discrete video card. The ICH8-M chip is used as the south bridge, which has a built-in sound Intel core high definition audio.

Intel Crestline PM965

As a wireless network adapter Intel Pro/Wireless 3945ABG is used, which supports only relatively low-speed 802.11a/b/g standards.

As graphics accelerator Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ uses a mid-level discrete video adapter ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650, which is based on the M86 chip, made according to the 55-nm process technology and operating at a frequency of 600 MHz. The video card has 512 MB of GDDR2 hardware video memory with a 128-bit interface.

The laptop is equipped with a hard drive TOSHIBA MK1652GSX 2.5" form factor with a spindle speed of 5400 rpm, SATA interface and 160 GB. The laptop is also equipped with an LG GSA-T40N DVD burner with the following speed characteristics:

Initially, the Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ is equipped with one two-gigabyte DDR2 RAM module operating at 667 MHz in single-channel mode.

Below is a table with detailed technical specifications Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ and its direct competitor, as well as the opponent in the processor tests and battery life test, ASUS M51Sr :

Test Methodology

Before testing, the Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ had its hard drive formatted under file system NTFS, then installed the operating system Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate x86 (English version) and drivers taken from manufacturer's website.

During testing, the following parameters were set:

Sidebar - disabled;
Welcome Center - disabled;
Screen Saver - disabled;
Windows Defender - disabled;
System Protection - disabled;
Windows Update - disabled;
Scheduled disk defragmentation - disabled;
User Account Control - disabled;
Screen brightness set to maximum;
Resolution of the liquid crystal matrix - maximum, 1280x800;
Aero-interface - enabled;
Desktop Theme - Windows Vista;
Volume level - 10%.

The tests were carried out in two modes by changing the settings of the power management scheme. The first part took place with mains power ("High Performance" setting, or " High performance» in Russian Windows versions, which provides maximum performance portable computer, and the battery life, respectively, is minimal). The second part is when powered by a battery (the “Power Saver” setting, or “Energy Saving” in the Russian version of Windows, in this case, the battery life is maximum). Some changes have been made to "Power Saver" other than those installed by default.

The test package was divided into two parts:

1st part: tests to measure the performance of both the system as a whole and its individual components:

Synthetic benchmarks for overall performance (PCMark Vantage and SYSmark 2007);
Game performance tests (3DMark 2006 1.1.0, 3DMark Vantage, Half Life 2: Episode Two, F.E.A.R., BioShock, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, World in Conflict).

Part 2 is focused on determining the battery life of a portable computer from a battery, measurements are made using the MobileMark 2007 test application.

MobileMark 2007 contains three modes of operation:

Productivity mode - "torn" serious load on the system;
Reader mode - emulation of reading a pdf file (in the "Read" test mode, the page is rewound every 2 minutes);
Movie (DVD) viewing mode.

In addition to the above, the 3DMark 2006 1.1.0 scenes were repeatedly run on the laptop, after which, using an infrared remote thermometer, the temperatures of the LCD panel, keyboard, bottom surface, “exhaust” were taken (a point with the maximum temperature was searched for on each surface) and the processor (using CPUID programs Hardware Monitor). This test was carried out twice: when working on a hard smooth table surface and a soft fleecy fabric surface.

Testing

Traditionally, let's start our review of Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ with the Futuremark synthetic application. The PCMark test package is designed to measure computer performance when working with office and related applications, as well as in games. The overall test result is calculated by the formula: PCMark Score = 87 x (Geometric mean of the main tests), where the geometric mean is (result 1 * result 2 * ...) / number of results. In the Vantage version, the results are presented with reference to typical scenarios of work, and not to computer components, as was the case in earlier versions of PCMark.

The "Memories" scenario is dedicated to evaluating the performance of systems when working with a digital media archive, including amateur photos and home videos.
The TV and Movies test uses high-definition video playback and transcoding as a load.
The "Gaming" test measures the platform's suitability for running 3D gaming applications.
The "Music" scenario is mainly about transcoding audio files of various formats.
The "Communication" test simulates visiting web resources, working with email and use of IP-telephony.
"Productivity" is another simple scenario that simulates working with typical office applications;
And the last test, "HDD", evaluates the performance of the hard drive only.

One of inexpensive processors The Intel Core 2 Duo family with the T5750 rating shows the result inherent in it. Changing the power supply to the battery reduces the frequency of the processor due to the inclusion of Intel's power-saving schemes, due to which the test results decrease by almost one and a half times. In fact, the test results show a general drop in performance, while the processor frequency was reduced by exactly half. The absence of FSB Frequency Switching technology on board, which reduces the frequency of the FSB bus, did not allow it to fall even more.

Version 2007 test package SYSmark, like its predecessor, is aimed at determining the overall performance of the system under various load patterns. SYSmark 2007 models the user experience to solve specific problems in several of the most common applications. At the output, the package issues several indexes showing the performance of systems demonstrated under various scenarios of activity, measuring the performance of systems in real applications when solving specific problems.

Well, the result is obvious: in offline mode, the SYSmark, which depends mainly on processor performance, drops by half.

The 3DMark test program is a set of 3D scenes based on its own graphics engine that load the video subsystem in various ways.

Due to the fact that the Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ has a maximum vertical resolution of 800 pixels, we were forced to make small changes to the testing process. Testing in 3DMark 2006 was performed twice - both times at 1280x800, but in the first case FSAA and anisotropic filtering were disabled, and in the second case they were enabled (AA 4x, AF 16x). In 3DMark Vantage, the laptop was tested only at one Entry difficulty level with a resolution of 1024x768, and feature tests had to be disabled.

The results obtained can be attributed to the indicators of the average by the standards of mobile video cards. Enabling anisotropic filtering and full-screen anti-aliasing reduces the final values by one and a half times.

After synthetic tests, the turn of real games came. For each game, several types of settings were set, from the mandatory maximum (16x anisotropic filtering and 4x full-screen anti-aliasing, all other parameters set to “high”) to the minimum (all parameters, if possible, set to “low”). For older games (Half Life 2: Episode Two and F.E.A.R.), a couple of tests were carried out at maximum and medium quality, for modern ones (BioShock, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and World in Conflict) - in more detail, with the capture of a very low quality level. All games have been tested on mains power only. The most severe settings for the graphics subsystem were chosen to compare the results of a laptop with "desktop" video cards, which we regularly testing(an exception is the game Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, in which on desktop computers and laptops we are on this moment using different test clips). Testing was done only at the laptop's native screen resolution (in our case, 1280x800), with the exception of F.E.A.R., which used a lower resolution of 1024x768.

As can be seen from the results obtained, the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 is a rather weak option for games, although it is positioned as a mid-range mobile solution. If we compare the map with its desktop namesake, which is currently worth a little less than two thousand rubles, then the absolute winner remains with the desktop Radeon HD 3650. You can play modern games on the Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ only by lowering the image quality settings to a minimum.

Battery life was measured using the MobileMark 2007 test suite. During the tests, the laptop transitions to StandBy and Hibernate states were disabled.

The first scenario ("Productivity"), which was used to measure the battery life of a laptop, is based on a simulation of the user's work in typical office applications. The load is unstable, one might even say “torn”, the user now and then breaks away from doing work. The second test is to measure the laptop's battery life when simple reading text. Adobe Reader was used as the program that displays the document on the screen. The third and final scenario used in our tests simulated DVD video playback using the InterVideo WinDVD player.

Although the Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ outperforms the ASUS M51Sr in almost all scenarios by an average of 20 minutes, this does not at all characterize it as an autonomous long-liver. A little more than two hours of reading a book is a rather low result. When it comes to watching a movie, in the era of the popularity of long films, 112 minutes is practically nothing. This laptop battery life is typical for gaming or multimedia models. In our case, the fault is obviously a very weak battery.

Towards the close of testing, here are the temperature readings of the laptop at idle and after a half-hour run of 3DMark 2006, on hard and soft surfaces. The temperature was measured using an infrared thermometer, the room at the time of testing was 22 °C. On each of the surfaces, a point with a maximum temperature was searched for. Processor heating was measured using the CPUID Hardware Monitor program.

It is worth noting that you are unlikely to be able to burn your hands or knees even with intensive work on a laptop. On the whole, the ventilation is well built, as the main surfaces heat up minimally, except for the heat removal from the processor, which is confirmed by the temperatures even in a state of complete rest. The noise emitted by a laptop computer at low loads is minimal, but in the most productive modes it increases greatly.

Advantages and disadvantages of Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ

Advantages:

"Brilliant" and attractive appearance;
Reasonable cost;
Good performance;
High-quality acoustics;
Touch block of buttons with the ability to turn off the backlight;
Ability to charge via USB ports with the laptop turned off.

Flaws:

"Glass" coating of the matrix;
Short battery life;
Modest delivery set;
A lot of easily soiled surfaces (especially the keyboard and touchpad buttons);
Small viewing angles of the matrix.

Conclusion

To say that the Toshiba Satellite A300 failed completely is impossible. Against the background of other mid-range solutions, of which there are a dime a dozen, the laptop noticeably stands out for its outstanding appearance, and this, perhaps, is the main thing in the thick of the same type of products. Toshiba designers managed to catch the fine line that separates beauty from frivolity. But with the keyboard it didn’t work out very well, it was painfully soiled. On the other hand, without it, the whole concept of a “brilliant” solution would have died, so for the sake of beauty, if you please, keep the keys clean.

As for the performance level, even on the last generation Centrino platform with a cheaper version of the processor, the Toshiba Satellite A300-1JJ looks quite worthy.

Toshiba Satellite Pro U400 - a special breed of "satellites"

L300 looks interesting. Its surface is painted silver, and the ends on the sides of the case are black. At the same time, the laptop has a rather stylish look. Although in reality the model is presented as a budget device. There is a certain play of color on the inner and outer panels of the case - dark contrasts with light. The design is well thought out. Black computers are very clearly visible on the silver under palm area. The upper part of the case is made without any decorations, there is only the company logo. The matte cover is quite reliable and practical. Almost all computer panels are matte, but the display is glossy. Design Notebook Satellite L300 is calm and measured, it can even be called modest.

Display

The L300 has a 15.4-inch widescreen display with a resolution of 1280x800. It has excellent color reproduction (up to 16.7 million shades). In addition, the WXGA screen has an excellent margin of brightness, and its image is very clear. This makes it possible to watch movies in good quality. However, the mirror surface of the Toshiba TruBrite screen can, in addition to the benefit of image saturation, be annoying if there are a lot of reflections and glare. Everything about this laptop is great, but the viewing angles aren't exactly perfect, it's mostly vertical. But the horizontal ones are very good, they are quite wide.

Keyboard and touchpad

Now let's talk about input devices. Keyboard Toshiba Satellite L300 has 87 buttons. You can't call it rigid, and the lack of this quality during typing can give deflections. The operation of the buttons themselves is quite smooth and almost silent.

This keyboard has its drawbacks. For example, small gaps between the buttons. Fingers while typing can jump to adjacent keys. In addition, the arrow buttons are made too narrow. The layout and labeling is excellent. Just below the spacebar is the touch pad. It has a slightly recessed surface, which makes it quite comfortable to use, since the fingers do not jump out of the pad. While the touchpad itself is responsive, the keys below it are hard to press.

CPU

Now let's talk about the performance of Toshiba Satellite L300. The characteristics of the processor will be given below. In the meantime, we note that there is no operating system installed on the computer. For some, this is not so convenient, because before you start work, you will have to do the settings. However, for advanced users, this is rather a plus, since they themselves can choose the system that they will use on their device and its parameters.

The laptop has a single core Intel processor Celeron 575 with 1MB L2 cache and clock frequency 2 GHz. This option is great for entry-level laptops, and while it's not as fast or performant, it's not expensive. In addition, the Celeron 575 has RAM, which is 2 GB. It can be expanded up to 4 GB, which will improve performance in solving various computing tasks.

The hard drive of this model has a capacity of 160 GB. Today, such an indicator has become the norm, it is quite enough to carry out daily work with files, store texts and programs. The graphics of this computer is represented by a built-in video card. Its performance is enough for undemanding games with low and medium settings. GMA 4500MHD allows you to correct photos, work with office programs. This means that the limited capabilities of this video card (Blu-ray playback, video file decoding) can be used in simple applications.

Other characteristics

WITH right side Toshiba Satellite L300 is built-in optical drive, a port where you can connect peripheral equipment, as well as a power socket. There is a hole at the end. The front of the laptop has two microphone and headphone jacks, and there is also a wireless switch. On the left side there is an ExpressCard/54 expansion slot and two USB ports - one above the other, there is also a fifteen-pin D-SUB video output. In addition, there is an RJ-45 network connector. And USB interfaces support Sleep Charge technology, it helps to charge a mobile phone or player, even when the computer is turned off.

This laptop also has ports on the back. In particular, a connector for connecting a modem. Although the number of ports is not very large, but they are quite enough for work.

Now let's talk about the autonomy of Toshiba Satellite L300. The accumulator is six-section lithium-ion. The capacity is 4800 mAh. This battery allows you to work autonomously for about 3 hours.
