Now Yandex has not only its own webmail, but also its own web organizer with the ingenuous name “Yandex.Calendar”. Does this mean Google Calendar has a serious contender?

At first glance, it is clear that the capabilities of Yandex.Calendar are poorer than those of other diary programs, both online and desktop. It is enough to look at its rivals for the weaknesses of Yandex.Calendar to become obvious. It has everything vitally necessary, but no more.

The service does not yet allow you to publish your calendar, it does not have a built-in search (how is it possible, “Yandex” - and without search?) and several functions required for each diary: from an overview page with immediate plans (agenda) to such, of course, little things, but a very important little thing - the “Today” button.

However, functionality is a gain. It's hard not to notice that the diary's interface is very well thought out and implemented. And the page with daily plans deserves special praise: it is original and seems to be more convenient than a traditional table.

But the biggest advantage of Yandex.Calendar is its integration with other Yandex services: Weather, Poster and TV Program.

Yandex calendar and synchronization with Android?

The weather forecast is displayed in the weekly calendar view by default, but the way to use the “Afisha” and “TV Programs” turned out to be much less obvious.

“Poster” and “TV program” are present in the list of calendars from the very beginning, but the checkboxes next to their names are empty and cannot be activated. It's confusing. At first, we even decided that they simply had not been implemented yet - this happens in beta versions. But no, everything is much more cunning.

It turns out that information about movies and TV shows is supposed to be added to the calendar directly from the corresponding Yandex services. An event appears in the diary after clicking on a special link - a time underlined by a hatched line (in the “Poster”) or a calendar icon that appears when you hover the cursor (in the “TV Program”).

In addition to information from other Yandex services, calendars from ics format files can be loaded into the diary (they are usually created in another organizing program). There is another traditional function for this type of service: subscription to calendars published on the Internet. Alas, there is a fly in the ointment here: before subscribing, you should add a new layer to your calendar and specify it during the import process, otherwise new events will be mixed with those already entered.

The mobile version of Yandex.Calendar looks much more competitive than the regular one. Moreover, in terms of capabilities it is practically no different from full version, although squeezed into the narrow frames of a PDA or smartphone display.

People who never part with their mobile phones will probably be pleased with the ability to enable SMS notifications about important events. The messages contain the name and scheduled time. There is no comment on the event in the SMS (this, however, is understandable), and the Cyrillic alphabet is replaced with Latin letters.

Alternatives

Google Calendar. Although Google Calendar is more powerful, its main advantages will be noticeable only to those who need not so much a personal diary, but a simple tool for organizing collaboration on projects. Besides, Google's only truly successful web app was the very first one, Gmail. All the others, including Google Calendar, although usable, lack any special advantages.

Of course, Google Calendar and Yandex.Calendar are far from the only web services of this kind. A good daily planner is built into Zoho Mail. The personal calendar built into Backpack from the well-known company 37signals is also not bad.

Mozilla Sunbird. Another alternative is obvious - this is not a web service, but a regular organizer program. Except the inevitable Microsoft Outlook, you can remember the diaries that come with Windows Vista and Mac OS X. Developed as part of the Mozilla project, the Sunbird diary is not as well known as Firefox or even Thunderbird, but it also deserves attention. At least, unlike other desktop organizers mentioned here, it has versions for all popular platforms.

20.10.17. Google has updated Calendar

Browser-based Google Calendar has received a new interface and several new features useful for business. Now he looks like mobile version and takes up screen real estate more intelligently. When you hover your mouse over event participants, you can get their contact information.

2017. Google Calendar is available on iPad

Many businessmen and executives use Google Calendar and many of them have an iPad. Therefore, the long-awaited appearance Google apps Calendar for iPad will be good news for many. The application will allow you to work with the calendar in the absence of the Internet, which is important for those who often travel to business meetings. In addition, the new app offers smart features that previously only worked on Android. Firstly, this is Find Time - a function that offers optimal time and place options when organizing a meeting of several employees. Secondly, Goals is an opportunity to set goals for yourself and receive reminders to achieve them.

2010. Zoho Calendar - the best online calendar on the market

Today Zoho has significantly updated its Zoho Calendar and released it from beta. At the same time, Zoho's chief evangelist, Raju Vegesna, called this service the best online calendar on the market. Considering that this is a modest person, and Zoho has never promoted itself with loud statements, perhaps this is true. At the very least, this service is no worse than Google Calendar, simply because it is a complete clone of it. Zoho Calendar allows you to maintain several calendars, share them (giving colleagues different access rights), install reminers (email, RSS), send invitations, insert public calendars into a website/blog. There is a plugin for Outlook (for synchronization), there is a mobile version, offline mode is supported with using Google Gears. Calendars can be synchronized with external services via the ICAL protocol. And of course, Zoho Calendar is tightly integrated with other Zoho services (CRM, Projects, Planner, Mail, Chat).

It would seem that after transferring GMail to Google Gears, offline mode for the Google Calendar calendar will be a matter of technology. Indeed, the announcement of an offline mode for Google Calendar came exactly a week after GMail. However, this announcement only disappointed. Firstly, for now the offline mode is only available for the calendar in Google Apps, and even then, not in all accounts. Secondly, offline you can only view the calendar, but you cannot edit, delete or create new events.

2008. Yahoo Calendar is moving to Zimbra

Yahoo continues to gradually roll out its Zibmra collaboration platform into its services. This time they released a beta version of Yahoo Calendar based on this engine. The new calendar is very similar in functionality to Google Calendar, but perhaps some will find it heavier, while others will find it more beautiful and convenient. Comparing with the Google calendar, we can note that it is more convenient to work with the daily schedule and the presence of a panel with a list of to-do tasks (which is sorely lacking in Google). Just like in Google Calendar, you can create several parallel calendars, share them with colleagues, set reminders (by email, IM, SMS), and create recurring events. The calendar supports the CalDAV protocol, which allows you to synchronize it with various desktop clients. ***

2008. Google Calendar syncs with Outlook and iCal

In the last few days, the guys from Google have released new features that allow you to synchronize Google Calendar with the most popular desktop calendars for Windows and Mac. In addition, this turned out to be a good addition for those Outlook and iCal users who would like to have access to their calendar via the Web or synchronize calendars on several remote devices. ***

2008. Yandex.Calendar appeared

Actually not that new, just less known. In fact, ContactOffice was founded in 1999 and today it is a profitable project with 350,000 users. 2007. View your Google Calendar via iCal

For example, Google allows you to quickly add an event to Google Calendar, but not to the Vista calendar.

The Zoho Notebook service is currently in closed testing, but some features have already become known. So, the key feature of the service is the ability to use content from other Zoho services. It is expected that users will be able to add tables, contacts, and calendars to their notes. In addition, it will be possible to implement various objects consisting of text, video, images, HTML, RSS. To make it easier to insert content snippets from various web pages, developers are working on a plugin for Internet Explorer and extension for Mozilla Firefox. One of the features of Zoho Notebook will be the availability of tools for drawing simple geometric shapes (circles, squares, lines). ***

2006. Corporations are moving to a web office

Nowadays, more and more corporations are beginning to realize that they can benefit from using Web 2.0 because it is more technologically advanced than standard corporate systems. For example, a set of free online services Google Apps for Your Domain includes enterprise email, calendar scheduler, IM pager and web page creation service. All these services were first tested on the mass market and only after public testing on the Internet were compiled into a package for corporate use. ***

2006. CalendarHub - another online calendar

After the release of Google applications, competing alternative services usually no longer attract much interest. Apparently, the service for maintaining calendars CalendarHub is also no exception. Although it has similar functionality to Google Calendar, it clearly loses in design and ease of use. In addition, it is still quite slow, which may be the weakest point of the service. The only feature that Google does not have is the ability to publish a calendar on your website.

2006. Yahoo launched a new email service

Yahoo has qualitatively updated its service for working with email, Yahoo Mail. The new version is a hybrid application (mashup) that combines several traditional individual programs, such as a search engine and a calendar. “Web applications are so intertwined that you end up with a hybrid email system with built-in weather and map services,” explained Ethan Diamond, director of sales at Yahoo. “The development of the World Wide Web is making its use easier, more interactive and faster.” ***

In the Calendars category, Google Calendar had no equal. Its main distinctive feature named convenient collaboration with calendars. The disadvantages of the application are the lack of synchronization with Outlook and PDAs. The 30 Boxes calendar took second place in the category. Also featured are CalendarHub and Kiko. The latter could well have claimed victory if it had not recently been put up for sale. ***

2006. Google launched an online calendar - Google Calendar

Google again pleased its users by releasing a high-quality and necessary service.

Comparison of Google Calendar and Yandex.Calendar services

Google Calendar is a fairly standard calendar with a schedule for days, weeks and months. The entire interface is written using AJAX, and no action causes the page to reload. But the main advantages of Google Calendar are perhaps not its dynamic interface. The main thing is that Google will definitely always do better than its competitors - the tightest integration with others Google services. If you already have mail on GMail or you use a personal start page from Google, then the calendar will come in handy ***

2005. Yahoo bought a web organizer

Yahoo announced the purchase of Upcoming.org, a free online calendar of events that users curate from their own event listings. But in the near future, Yahoo will likely incorporate much of Upcoming.org's content into its site, expanding its local search capabilities. ***

The Russian company Yandex is a source of pride for all of Russia. In fact, this is the only large IT corporation in the country that can oppose something software from Google, Apple and Microsoft. Most Russians probably know it from the mapping service “Yandex Maps” or from the mail service “Yandex Mail”. However, this tech giant has one extremely useful service, which no one knows about, but which every person should start using.

At the end of 2017, the Yandex company updated its proprietary service, which, for mysterious reasons, only a few know about. This is a real “Calendar” with advanced functions for planning tasks and events. A couple of weeks ago it underwent a complete redesign, receiving a completely new appearance, which is made in the best spirit of minimalism. This is an incredibly convenient service that helps you plan your tasks for the day, week or even month in advance. All data is linked to the account, so it will be available on all smartphones, tablets and computers that are authorized through it.

One of the incredible useful functions The Yandex Calendar service is the ability to notify in advance about any planned events in three ways - by mail, via CaiDAV (for software developers) and via SMS messages. It is the latter method of notifications about certain events added to the service that most may like the most, since it will help not to miss an important meeting or a call promised to someone.

Moreover, in an extremely useful service from the Russian company Yandex, you can even select the first day of the week, as well as the start time of the day. For people who work unusual schedules, this can be incredibly convenient. If necessary, you can send your calendar with planned activities to your work colleagues, relatives or friends to notify them about certain events. On average, it will take about 30-60 minutes to fully implement the functionality of the Calendar service, but then it will be a pleasure to use it every day, knowing about every nuance.

It goes without saying that you can use the Yandex Calendar service absolutely free, and thanks to the absence of any advertising, doing so is doubly pleasant. By planning your life at least 1-2 days in advance, you can “unload your head” from unnecessary information, thereby focusing your brain activity on performing some other tasks.

Until December 22 inclusive, everyone has the opportunity to use Xiaomi Mi Band 4, spending only 1 minute of their personal time on it.

Join us on

A large number of online calendars are only part of large services and portals. 30 boxes, contrary to tradition, is an independent solution.

Registration is free, no premium services are provided. You indicate your mailbox, come up with a password, after which you need to confirm registration using the link from the letter sent by the service. As soon as you return to the service, the program will first ask you to provide some personal information. First, the service mysteriously detects your Flickr account, correctly displaying your name and a link to the uploaded photostream. The mystique is that the services are in no way connected with each other. Flickr uses a Yahoo! account, and during testing 30 boxes was used Gmail account. You are also asked to provide a MySpace ID and blog address. In the second case, enter a standard URL.

The second step of entering personal data is to indicate your friends' birthdays. This is implemented in an extremely inconvenient way. A simple text entry window opens, with a series of prompts displayed underneath. You must manually enter the person's name, and then enter his date of birth using the keyboard in the same way. There is no calendar or other assistants provided. Your time zone is also indicated here.

In the third step, a list of friends is entered. Text entry field again. You indicate the email addresses of your contacts. And this is where the initial entry of personal data ends. However, in the future, it will be possible to expand personal information in the service properties. For example, it is possible to enter an ICQ number, address home page, Skype ID.

The design of the service is a blatant copy of Mac OS X. However, the developers do not make any secret of this. The calendar supports changing themes. The default style is called OS X Gray. The service includes two more design options - Gmail Blue and Flickr White. This is still a fairly rare feature for web applications.

The default calendar settings correspond to American realities. Firstly, it starts the week on Sunday, and secondly, it is a US national holiday. All this can be corrected in the service settings, in the additional options section. However, Russia is not on the list of countries whose national holidays can be inserted into the calendar. The list, it should be noted, is small - only eight items.

The service interface has not been translated into Russian, but a small amount of text information somewhat compensates for the lack of localization. By default, the screen displays one month. Adjacent months have a distinct background color. The default theme is white/blue. The result is a clear navigation by month. On the right side of the page there is a pop-up menu with a miniature six-month calendar. The current number is highlighted with a frame.

Above the calendar there is a line for entering a text query. At first it seems like a search. At least that's the traditional use of single-line text entry forms. But in 30 boxes the developers got creative and implemented the creation of a new task in a similar way. A special syntax is supported here, which allows you to do without unnecessary gestures. For example, you can enter "Apartment cleaning 1/1/2009 repeat weekly". That's it, now you have planned mopping and dusting for Thursdays. The only shame is that the service does not support entering parameters in Russian - this would be more efficient for us.

If you left-click on any day in the calendar, a window with a list of current to-dos opens. From here you can create new tasks in the classic way. The parameters do not shine with originality. The start and end date of the event, time, and repetition rules are indicated here. They, it should be noted, are primitive: you only indicate the interval - day, week, month and year. Next, enter a text description of the task, keywords, and a list of invited guests. The last two points are worth dwelling on in more detail.

Labels are used in two cases. The first one is event search. You select the required keyword, after which a list of events that satisfy your condition is shown in a separate dialog box. The second case is the need to highlight tasks with a certain color. By default, all events are presented on the screen in a dull gray tint. However, you can assign labels to them, which in turn assign colors. As a consequence, on home page calendar, all lines with corresponding keywords will be colored according to the user selection.

In addition to the standard monthly view, you can use several more modes. However, they open in separate dialog boxes and are not interactive. It is possible to view the upcoming to-do list, open a weekly mode, showing the geographical location of events for the current day.

Finally, you can open nothing less than a real virtual desktop in your browser. In combination with full screen mode operation of the program, this mode, called WebTop, looks very impressive. The left panel, the dock, contains a list of main tools related to the service in one way or another. The main thing is the calendar. Additionally, you can enable/disable the line Google search, friend updates (tasks, Flickr photos, blogs, etc.), and Gmail calls.

The service allows you to publish calendars. You can share all your events with your friends. Publishing calendars on blogs is supported. This is done by copying and pasting snippets of HTML code.

It is possible to add a calendar to iGoogle and several other popular services. New events and other updates can be received via RSS.

In addition to the calendar, 30 boxes allows you to create a to-do list that is not tied to a specific schedule. It's called ToDo. In addition, the service creates a separate page for each user with his personal data. For example, it shows the latest photos uploaded to Flickr.

The service loads and works quite slowly. Two interface modes are offered. In addition to the default loading page, you can use simpler HTML. However, there is no noticeable increase in the speed of the service.

Products and Microsoft services have never been distinguished by their compatibility with open standards, which, however, does not harm the developer, but, on the contrary, brings dividends. For example, a user with problems opening DOC and, especially, DOCX in OpenOffice.org will suffer and return to his native, familiar Microsoft Office, where everything works without any major complaints. The same thing happens with web applications. Suffice it to remember, which only works correctly in Internet Explorer. Windows Live Portal, as expected, does not work in all browsers. Officially supported by Internet Explorer, Safari and Mozilla Firefox. Trying to open the portal using an unsupported browser results in an error page.

You can use any device to sign up for Windows Live. email from a third-party developer, but it’s more convenient to create a “branded” account on hotmail.com or live.ru. Only in this case will you receive the full range of portal capabilities. One of its services is the Calendar, which will be discussed further.

The calendar design is made in pastel green and blue colors, just like latest version operating system company - Windows Vista. The top of the page contains a line that allows you to switch services. There are two drop-down menus. One of them calls up a set of additional services, which, by the way, includes a calendar, and the second - games, news and weather forecast.

A nice feature of the calendar is that weekends are greyed out. It seems like a small thing, but for some reason the vast majority of developers ignore this design option. In almost all countries, no one really works on Saturday and Sunday. As a last resort, you can tie the allocation of weekends to localization. Or make it an option. You never know, maybe the residents of a certain country get hurt when the weekends are not shown in accordance with their traditions.

The left sidebar contains a miniature calendar. The current day is highlighted with an orange background. Days on which events are scheduled are shown in bold. Below is a list of calendars. Each of them has its own color label. One of the calendars is owned by the user, and the other two are subscriptions. A list of national holidays is provided, as well as the birthdays of your contacts. The calendar is integrated with the postal service and with Windows Messenger, where data is taken to notify about upcoming holidays.

A large selection of ready-made design themes is offered. They differ in color scheme and background pattern. Not only static but also dynamic themes are offered. The design of the calendar changes depending on the time of day and the weather. It should be noted that this is not a useful feature. Active computer users sometimes do not notice what is happening outside the window, completely immersed in work. And here you can see it right away on the screen. The sky darkened, the stars appeared - it’s time to go home, stop working.

If you hover your mouse over any event, a tooltip with a brief summary of it opens. Clicking on the event title or on the link at the bottom of the drop-down window brings up the task properties page. A similar form is used when creating new events.

To create a new event, you must either use the calendar menu or hover your mouse over the required day. An “add” link appears in the corner of the cell. It opens a small window where you enter the name and description of the event, as well as the time. Will it not be enough? Follow the link "details". What's unique about Windows Live Calendar is that you can assign icons to events. They are similar to the extended statuses in some IM clients. In addition, the rules for repeating events and several other properties are specified.

The service allows you to create a special class of events called “social”. They are radically different from standard tasks, which, in general, you don’t see anyone doing today. They are found, with slight differences, in all online calendars. Social events, as you might guess, are aimed at interaction between users and group resolution of issues.

In addition to the title, the motto of the event is introduced. For example, a general cleaning of the office is planned. We create a corresponding task and add “cleanliness is the key to health.” This gives the event more emotion.

A huge number of design themes have been created for social events. They are divided into groups. Events are individual. Here is the stadium, the ball and the boots. Oh, the whole group of us are going to football tomorrow. Now we definitely won’t miss the decisive match of the local club. And then come balloons, champagne, ribbons. That's right, next week is the director's anniversary. In other words, social events are beautiful, individual, and emotional.

Of course, you indicate the location and time of the event. The text description has also not been forgotten. All social events have a separate, easy-to-read URL. By the way, you can come up with it yourself. The service only checks the correctness and availability of this address.

The event address can be available to all users or only to the list of invitees. You can use ready-made contacts or enter email addresses manually. Each person invited to the event can agree to take part in it or refuse. Guests are allowed to leave comments about the event. As a result, a real discussion can unfold, a discussion like on a forum. The comment structure is reminiscent of discussions on some blog posts. Branches are also created here - chains of answers. The event page always displays a list of guests.

Being part of a large portal, the calendar is adjacent to the postal service, with search engine, a photo sharing service, thematic groups and other components. Their diversity does not yet reach Google, but, as we know, Microsoft is slowly harnessing, but then is able to literally sweep away all competitors.

It was explained how to synchronize contacts, incl. using Yandex services. But in addition to working with contacts, it can be very useful to synchronize your calendar. Thanks to this, you can have your up-to-date schedule on all your devices and thanks to this you will not miss an important event or meeting. Now we will tell you how to synchronize Yandex calendar in such a way that you can work not only with calendar events, but also with your to-do list while on the go. On the Yandex website, this to-do list is available for editing in mailbox, while the calendar is located on a separate page. However, both of these resources are stored in the same account and can be used on mobile devices when synchronized.

Technical tools for synchronizing your calendar and to-do list

Calendar entries and tasks are synchronized in the same way that contacts are synchronized. Newer data is stored on devices at the time of synchronization, and thus up-to-date information is maintained everywhere. If the CardDAV server is usually used for contacts, then for the calendar and to-do list there is its brother - the CalDAV server. As you might guess, the three letters Cal are short for the word Calendar. And such a server is publicly available on Yandex websites. And of course, if you want to use local synchronization, avoiding public servers, then the Baikal server mentioned in the previous article allows you to create CalDAV accounts and synchronize them over the network.

Calendar entries do not contain a wide variety of fields. Therefore, with them there is usually no such problem as with contacts - the problem of partial incompatibility on different systems. The only stumbling block is Android smartphones - they do not have tools for working with tasks as standard, and there is also no means for synchronization via DAV servers. Therefore, for Android you will need to install additional software.

Having an account on Yandex, you can use the online calendar and tasks using the following software:

IN Windows system you can work in the emClient application, given that it synchronizes, among other things. and contacts. If you don’t need contact synchronization, then you can use a completely free one, which, thanks to the Lightning extension, allows you to work with a common calendar and tasks.

Devices on iOS-based by default they can work with the CalDAV server, so the implementation of special calendar programs is not necessary for them.

For smartphones and Android tablets There are no completely free solutions. Existing demon paid application CalDAV-Sync Free does not sync the task list. For such synchronization, you will need to purchase an inexpensive paid version of this program and use it in conjunction with the free OpenTasks application from the same author. The second option is to use another paid app, DAVdroid, which syncs both your calendar with your to-do list and your contacts. But you will still have to work with the list of tasks in the OpenTasks program, since the standard Android calendar does not display a list of tasks. All of the above programs are available in the Play Market.

In any modern browser you can work with Yandex calendar directly through the web interface. Unlike the contact editor, the web version of the Yandex calendar has full functionality and is quite convenient to use.

Connecting a Yandex account on a computer

If you are using mail application emClient, then the procedure for setting up Yandex synchronization for this program is described in the previous article (link at the beginning of the article). If you want to use Mozilla program Thunderbird, then to use the calendar synchronization feature you will need to select the main menu item “File/New/Calendar”.

The next step is to select the “Online” option.

We indicate the CalDAV server type and its URL – https://caldav.yandex.ru/

At the final stage you will need to specify a name.

As a result, the account will be ready for online update.

During the first communication session with the server, you will be asked for a login and password to log in.

As a result, all information received from the server will be displayed in the local calendar and task list. You can open them through the “Events and tasks” menu.

Setting up synchronization on smartphones and tablets

On iPhones and iPads, connecting a calendar account is similar to adding an account for contacts. This is done in the “Settings” / “Calendar” section. In the window that appears, select the option “Accounts” / “Add account” / “Other” / “ Account CalDAV" / . You will need to provide your server login information.

On the Android system you need to use additional applications. If you synchronized Yandex contacts using the DAVdroid program, then through the same program you can synchronize your calendar and to-do list. It is enough to check both items in the CalDAV window in the account settings: “My events” and “Don’t forget”. After updating the data via the network, all events from the Yandex calendar will appear in the standard Android calendar.

But to access the to-do list, you will need to install the free OpenTasks application from the Play Market. This application was created by the author to work in conjunction with the inexpensive CalDAV Sync application. But it also works well in conjunction with the DAVdroid application.

conclusions

Using free public Yandex servers, you can synchronize your calendar between your PC and other devices - smartphones, tablets, and other computers. You can also work with this information through the web interface - all changes made will be saved on devices by synchronizing your Yandex account. Thanks to this, you can significantly increase your level of personal organization. After all, now you don’t have to be at the computer to work with your tasks and schedule. And vice versa - it is not necessary to edit information on the small screen of a smartphone. It’s much easier and faster to do this on a computer – and it will update automatically on your smartphone.
