Sign out and return to iCloud

The latest fix focused on iCloud Backup glitches and how turning the option on and off might fix the problem. Since that didn't work, let's take it one step further and log out completely and go back to iCloud. Hopefully this will fix any remaining glitches and other anomalies associated with iCloud Backup.

If signing out of your iPhone or iPad deletes a certain amount of data, such as contacts associated with your account, you don't need to worry because all the deleted items are synced when you sign in again.

Step 1. On the Settings screen, tap your profile name and then tap Sign Out.

Step 2. Insert your Apple ID password when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone/iPad.

Delete previous backups

  • The backup process is completed, the requested data has been copied; look for possible errors;
  • the copied data is suitable for recovery; if a tape is used, it must be read in another tape drive.

Make sure that the data can be recovered on the server and that Exchange can retrieve the information.

If one of the three checks fails, the cause of the failure must be found and corrected. For example, during a hot copy, Exchange calculates a checksum for each page and compares it to the checksum of the page on disk. If the checksums do not match, error 1018 is issued and the copying process stops. If errors are detected during the scan, the administrator will have a chance to correct the problems before stopping the copying procedure.

Even good backups may become unusable over time due to changes in the environment, backup software, Windows or Exchange configuration. The most reliable guarantee of success is regular checks, and the fastest and easiest way to ensure that your backups are working is to check the event log, applications and reports generated by the backup program. The event log should not contain any errors generated by Exchange during the backup period. The backup program report contains information about missing files and other errors.

Incorrect transaction log processing

The ability to recover an Exchange database is determined by the state of the transaction logs. If there is a valid set of log files for the database, then it is possible to recover the database from the point of failure. Conversely, if logs are lost or corrupted, the likelihood of full recovery is reduced. During the recovery process, Exchange attempts to replay log files sequentially, starting with the first log needed by the database (also called the low anchor log) and ending with the last available log (high anchor log). If there is no log file between the bottom and top anchors, log playback stops. The restore procedure cannot resume until the missing log file is restored.

Online backups automatically include log files as part of the backup set. During normal operation, Exchange continues to create new log files as transactions occur. These log files remain on disk until a full or hot copy is performed, at which point the Exchange IS process truncates or deletes the files. You cannot delete log files yourself. In some cases, you may need to copy the log files to a separate directory for safekeeping. The Microsoft article "Offline Backup and Restoration Procedures for Exchange" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=296788) recommends saving copies of transaction logs to a separate location before restoring data from an offline backup.

When restoring with NTBackup, logs are not replayed unless the Last restore set checkbox is selected (or a similar checkbox in another backup program). The database being restored cannot be mounted unless this option is selected or the Eseutil /r command is used to manually start log processing.

If there are no transaction logs or at least one log file is corrupted, you should use free analyzer Exchange Server Disaster Recovery Analyzer (ExDRA) Microsoft. This tool analyzes the dismounted database, reports presence and absence of log files and possible options eliminate detected problems. ExDRA is a valuable tool when the recovery process fails unexpectedly, but the administrator still needs to understand the intricacies of the disaster recovery process and consult with Microsoft Customer Service and Support (CSS) or other experts.

Lack of time to copy

The backup process takes time. Each server configuration has an indicator bandwidth, which reflects the amount of data that can be copied or restored in a given time period. A common mistake is to underestimate the time required for recovery. Taking too long to recover sometimes results in service level agreement (SLA) violations and often leads to user dissatisfaction.

Microsoft recommends measuring the time it takes to back up your data and allowing twice as much time for recovery. Why does it take twice as long to restore than to copy? Let's say we need to get a 60 GB copy of a database using a backup system with a write speed of 12 GB/hour. Five hours is an acceptable time for a backup. However, when preparing to restore data, remember that simply reading the data will take five hours. The recovery process also requires the following steps:

  • Find the appropriate backup media (if you are using removable media such as tape) or find the appropriate disk volume (if you are using VSS or SAN-based backups).
  • Transfer the backup data to the server from which you are restoring.
  • Create a recovery server or Recovery Storage Group (RSG), if necessary.
  • Read the data from the backup media and fix any errors or problems.
  • Replay transaction logs.
  • Move data from the recovery server or RSG to production mailboxes.
  • Mount the database successfully.
  • Fix any related problems.

Meeting the requirements of this list is a serious task; If problems occur at any point in the process, subsequent restore operations will fail. The more experienced the administrator, the smoother the process. He more accurately estimates recovery time and has the skills to troubleshoot common problems in a specific environment.

Forgotten little things

Discussions about Exchange backup issues often revolve around copying and restoring data; this leaves out many other objects and data elements that also need to be copied and restored. For example, if there is a catastrophic hardware failure, the hardware must be replaced and Windows and Exchange installed on the new server before Exchange database and transaction log backups can be used. By backing up your Exchange server state, it is easy to restore your server and Exchange data and greatly speed up the return to normal operation without wasting time searching for CDs, product serial numbers, etc. If your Exchange environment has antivirus programs, spam filters, X.509 Certificate Authorities (CAs), fax connectors, or other support services, you need to make copies and restore their configuration, along with important data (for example, private keys and filter lists) to restore these services to their original working state.

System state backup using NTBackup collects all system data on the local computer, including the registry, Active Directory (AD) Directory Information Tree (DIT) files on the domain controller (DC), Windows data Certificate Services, DHCP and DNS server databases and other required data. Most third-party backup utilities also have this feature, but you can get by without these tools; With NTBackup, you can schedule a copy of the system state to a file on disk, and then inject that file into each Exchange backup. This method guarantees a timely updated copy of the system state. Don't forget to update your disk periodically automatic recovery system (Automated System Recovery (ASR). With its help, it is often possible to fix damaged instances of Windows without completely reinstalling the operating system.

Neglect of practice

It is best to master the data recovery process before problems occur. You can perform recovery even if the enterprise has only one database and a single server. To do this, you need to obtain a copy of Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 or VMware Workstation, build a test server and practice data recovery. When working with Exchange Server 2003, you need to learn about RSGs and how to use them. You need to learn how to restore data from the original server to another server using a backup program. Installation CDs and serial numbers products must be kept in a safe place (not in text file on the server that needs to be restored).
