Hello.

Setting up a router is quite simple and quick, but sometimes this procedure turns into real “ordeals”...

The TP-Link TL-WR740N router is a fairly popular model, especially for home use. Allows you to organize a home local network with Internet access for all mobile and non-mobile devices. mobile devices(phone, tablet, laptop, desktop PC).

In this article I wanted to give a short step by step instructions on setting up such a router (in particular, we’ll touch on Internet settings, Wi-Fi and local network).

Connecting the TP-Link TL-WR740N router to a computer

Connecting the router to the computer is standard. The scheme is something like this:

  1. disconnect the Internet provider cable from network card computer and connect this cable to the Internet router socket (it is usually marked in blue, see Fig. 1);
  2. then connect with cable (which comes with the router) network card of a computer/laptop with a router - with a socket yellow color (there are four of them on the device body);
  3. connect the power supply to the router and turn it on to a 220V network;
  4. in fact, the router should start working (the LEDs on the case will light up and start blinking);
  5. then turn on the computer. When the OS is loaded, you can move on to the next setup step...

Rice. 1. Rear view/front view

Login to router settings

To do this, you can use any modern browser: Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox. Opera, etc.

Login options:

  1. Settings page address (default): 192.168.1.1
  2. Login for access: admin
  3. Password: admin

Important! If you cannot enter the settings (the browser gives an error that the password is incorrect), the factory settings may have been reset (for example, in a store). There is a reset button on the back of the device - press it for 20-30 seconds. As a rule, after this operation you can easily go to the settings page.

Setting up Internet access

Almost all of the settings you need to make on your router will depend on your ISP. Typically, all the necessary parameters (logins, passwords, IP addresses, etc.) are contained in your agreement drawn up when connecting to the Internet.

Many Internet providers (for example: Megaline, ID-Net, TTK, MTS, etc.) use a PPPoE connection (I would call it the most popular).

Without going into details, when connecting PPPoE you need to know the password and login for access. In some cases (for example, MTS) PPPoE+Static Local is used: i.e. You will get access to the Internet when you enter your login and password, but the local network needs to be configured separately - you will need an IP address, mask, and gateway.

In Fig. Figure 3 shows the Internet access configuration page (section: Network - WAN):

  1. Wan connection type: specify the connection type (for example PPPoE, by the way, further settings depend on the connection type);
  2. User name: enter your login to access the Internet;
  3. Password : password -//-;
  4. if you have a “PPPoE+Static Local” scheme, then specify Static IP and enter the local network IP addresses (in other cases, just select dynamic IP or Disabled);
  5. then save the settings and reboot the router. In most cases, the Internet will already be working (if you entered the password and login correctly). Most of the “problems” occur with setting up access to the provider’s local network.

Rice. 3. Setting up a PPOE connection (used by providers (for example): TTK, MTS, etc.)

By the way, pay attention to the Advanced button (Fig. 3, “advanced”) - in this section you can set DNS (in cases where they are required to access the provider’s network).

Rice. 4. Advanced PPOE settings (needed in rare cases)

If your Internet provider binds to MAC addresses, then you need to clone your MAC address of the old network card (through which you previously accessed the Internet). This is done in the section Network/MAC Clone .

Rice. 5. MAC address cloning is necessary in some cases (for example, the MTS provider at one time linked to MAC addresses, I don’t know how they do it now..)

By the way, as an example, I took a small screenshot of the Internet settings from Billine - see fig. 6.

The settings are as follows:

  1. connection type (WAN connection type) - L2TP;
  2. password and login: take from the contract;
  3. Server IP address (server IP address): tp/internet.beeline.ru
  4. after that, save the settings and reboot the router.

Rice. 6. Setting up the Internet from Billine in the TP-Link TL-WR740N router

Setting up a Wi-Fi network

For Wi-Fi settings you need to go to the next section:

  • - Wireless/setup wi-fi… (if the interface is English);
  • - Wireless mode/Setting up wireless mode (if the interface is Russian).

Next you need to set the network name: for example, “ Auto"(see Fig. 7). Then save the settings and go to the " Wireless Security » (to set a password, otherwise all your neighbors will be able to use your Internet via Wi-Fi...).

Rice. 8. Wireless connection protection - password setting

Connect to a Wi-Fi network and access the Internet

The connection is actually quite simple (I’ll show you using a tablet as an example).

By going to the Wi-FI settings, the tablet finds several networks. Select your network (in my example Autoto) and try to connect with her. If a password is set, you must enter it to gain access.

Actually, that’s all: if the router is configured correctly and the tablet was able to connect to the Wi-Fi network, then the tablet will also have access to the Internet (see Fig. 10).

The TP-Link TL-WR740n router is a device designed to provide shared access to the Internet. It is both a Wi-Fi router and a 4-port network switch. With support for 802.11n technology, network speeds up to 150 Mbps and an affordable price, this device can be an indispensable element when creating a network in an apartment, private house or small office. But in order to use the router’s capabilities to the fullest, you need to be able to configure it correctly. This will be discussed further.

Before you begin directly setting up the router, you need to prepare it for operation. To do this you will need:

After this, all that remains is to turn on the power of the router and begin its direct configuration.

Possible settings

To begin setting up the TL-WR740n, you need to connect to its web interface. To do this, you will need any browser and knowledge of login parameters. Typically this information is printed on the bottom of the device.

Attention! Today the domain tplinklogin.net no longer owned by TP-Link. You can connect to the router settings page at tplinkwifi.net

If it is impossible to connect to the router using the address indicated on the case, you can simply enter the device’s IP address instead. According to the factory settings, TP-Link devices are set to IP address 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. Login and password - admin.

Having entered all the necessary information, the user is taken to the main menu of the router settings page.

Its appearance and list of sections may differ slightly depending on the firmware version installed on the device.

Quick setup

For consumers who are not very experienced in the intricacies of setting up routers, or do not want to bother too much, the TP-Link TL-WR740n firmware has a quick setup function. To launch it, you need to go to the section with the same name and click on the button "Further".

The further sequence of actions is as follows:

This completes the quick setup of the router. Immediately after the reboot, you will have access to the Internet and the ability to connect via Wi-Fi with the specified parameters.

Manual setup

Despite the availability of a quick setup option, many users prefer to configure the router manually. This requires the user to have a deeper understanding of the device's functionality and operation. computer networks, however, it is also not very difficult. The main thing is not to change those settings whose purpose is unclear or unknown.

Internet setup

To set up your own connection to the World Wide Web, you need to do the following:

Some providers, in addition to the parameters listed above, may require registration of the router's MAC address. These settings can be found in the subsection "Clone MAC address". Usually you won't need to change anything there.

Wireless configuration

All Wi-Fi connection parameters are set in the section "Wireless mode". You need to go there and then do the following:

It is not necessary to make any changes in the remaining subsections. All you need to do is reboot the device and make sure that the wireless network is working as expected.

Additional features

Completing the steps described above is usually enough to provide access to the Internet and distribute it to devices on the network. Therefore, many users finish configuring the router here. However, there are a number of interesting functions that are becoming increasingly popular. Let's take a closer look at them.

Access Control

The TP-link TR-WR740n device allows you to very flexibly regulate access to the wireless network and the Internet, which allows you to make the network it controls more secure. The following options are available to the user:

The TL-WR740n has other network access control capabilities, but they are less interesting for the average user.

Dynamic DNS

Customers who need to access computers on their network from the Internet may benefit from the Dynamic DNS feature. A separate section in the TP-Link TL-WR740n web configurator is dedicated to its settings. In order to activate it, you must first register your Domain name from your DDNS service provider. Then take the following steps:

  1. Find your DDNS service provider in the drop-down list and enter the registration data received from it in the appropriate fields.
  2. Enable dynamic DNS by checking the corresponding checkbox.
  3. Check the connection by pressing the buttons "To come in" And "Go out".
  4. If the connection was successful, save the created configuration.

After this, the user will be able to access computers on his network from the outside using the registered domain name.

Parental control

Parental controls are a feature highly sought after by parents who want to control their child's access to the Internet. To configure it on the TL-WR740n you need to take the following steps:

If desired, the action of the created rule can be configured more flexibly by setting up a schedule in the section "Access control".

Those wishing to use the function parental controls It should be borne in mind that in the TL-WR740n it operates in a very unique way. Enabling the function divides all devices on the network into one controlling device, which has full access to the network, and managed devices, which have limited access according to the created rules. If the device is not classified into any of these two categories, it will be impossible to access the Internet from it. If this state of affairs does not suit the user, it is better to use third-party software to implement parental controls.

IPTV

Possibility of viewing digital television attracts more and more users via the Internet. Therefore, almost all modern routers provide IPTV support. The TL-WR740n is no exception to this rule. Setting up this feature is very easy. The sequence of actions is as follows:

If you cannot configure the IPTV function or such a section is completely missing on the router settings page, you should update the firmware.

These are the main features of the TP-Link TL-WR740n router. As can be seen from the review, despite the budget price, this device provides the user with a fairly wide range of options for accessing the Internet and protecting their data.

TP-Link routers are one of the most common devices on the domestic market. The popularity of products from the Chinese manufacturer is due to optimal ratio prices, quality and trouble-free operation. And TP-Link's WR740n model, thanks to support for both modern and legacy standards network connections, providing data transfer speeds of up to 150 Mbit and reliable protection against possible attacks from the outside, became an excellent solution when building home network.

The WR740n router from TP-Link is a high-speed router based on 802.11n technology and is compatible with all devices that support IEEE 802.11b/g standards. His distinctive feature from models based on these standards, there is more high speed data transmission and a several-fold increased wireless network coverage radius. This allows you to watch streaming video, use IP telephony and play online games without any problems. Thus, the TP-Link WR740n, with its characteristics, combines the capabilities of a modern high-speed router with a budget price.

Appearance

The design of the WR740n model is implemented in accordance with the classic standards of devices from TP-Link. The device is housed in a stylish plastic case with rounded edges. Its elegance is given by the narrowed front part and the harmonious combination of the black stripe of the indicator panel with the matte white color of the rest of the body.

The TP-Link WR740n indicator panel does not have labels, but this does not make it difficult to determine their purpose. All indicator windows are designed in the form of icons, which are intuitive even for a novice user. From left to right on the panel are:

  • power indicator;
  • built-in self-test indicator. Should flash during normal operation;
  • Wi-Fi module;
  • LAN ports (four indicators);
  • wireless device connection indicator;
  • QSS function indicator.

On the back of the device there are four ports for connecting via local area network (LAN), and one WAN port for connecting the provider’s cable. To avoid confusion between the LAN and WAN connectors, the WAN port is marked in a different color. On the sides of the ports there is a connector for connecting the power supply, a power on/off button and a non-removable Wi-Fi antenna, and on the other side there is a WPS/RESET button.

At the bottom of the case there is a cooling grille and holes that allow you to mount the device to the wall. There are no other ventilation devices on the body, so when installing it, care must be taken to ensure that there is clearance between the bottom and the surface adjacent to it.

In the center of the bottom of the router there is an information sticker with the main parameters of the device.

Connection and preparation for work

Before you begin setting up the TP-Link WR740n, you need to select a location for its location. It is optimal to place the router in the center of the room, so that the distance to it from the most distant corners is approximately the same. It should also be borne in mind that walls, doors and ceilings containing metal elements create interference with signal propagation. The same applies to household electrical appliances: it is not recommended to place them close to the router.

Having chosen a location for the router, you need to do the following:

  1. Connect the cable from your provider to the WAN port on the back of the device. If you access the Internet via a DSL connection, one of the LAN ports of the router must be connected to the LAN port of the modem.
  2. Connect the TP-Link WR740n to your computer using a cable through one of the LAN ports.
  3. Activate the device's power.

This completes the connection of the TP-Link TL router model WR740n and its preparation for operation.

Settings

Like other devices of the same purpose, the WR740n is configured via a web interface. To enter it, the computer and router must be in the same address space. In the vast majority of cases, you don’t need to do anything special for this, since TP-Link devices, by default, have the DHCP server mode activated, which automatically assigns an IP address to all connected devices. All that remains is to check that in the settings network connection The computer was set to automatically obtain an IP.

In order to go into the settings of the TP-Link router, you must:

  1. In the address bar of your browser, type 192.168.0.1.
  2. In the window that appears, enter admin in the “login” line and then enter the password in the “password” line. The default username and password are identical in TP-Link routers.

The WR740n router from TP-Link has been in production for quite some time and has undergone a number of changes. Currently there are six modifications of this model. Therefore, in older devices the default address is 192.168.1.1. You can find out for sure from the sticker on the bottom of the router case.

Automatic setup

For users who are not confident in their computer skills, or who do not want to delve into the intricacies of its operation, the manufacturer provides the ability to configure tp-link tl wr740n routers in automatic mode. Created for this special program, supplied with the router on CD.

  5. Enter your username and password.
  6. In the “Secondary connection” line, check the “Dynamic IP” radio button.
  7. Install automatic connection in the next parameter.
  8. Save the settings and reboot your TP-Link.

This completes the configuration of the WR740n model from TP-Link for NetByNet.

Regardless of the provider, after completing the settings for the TL WR740n from TP-Link, you can no longer launch a high-speed connection in Windows. Access to the global network is now completely regulated by the router. Therefore, it is recommended that you also clear the routing table in your operating system.

Backup connection via 3G, 4G

Currently, many users use access via mobile operator. But to set up such a connection for a home network, you need a router equipped with a USB port. The WR740n model is not suitable for this purpose, since it does not have such a connector.

Wireless network

In order to configure wireless network in WR740n, you need to go to the “Wireless” tab in the web interface of your TP (“Wireless mode”) and select “Wireless mode settings” there. Then you need to configure the following settings:

  1. In the “Network name” field, indicate the desired name of your wifi connection or leave what is there by default. It is, however, recommended to come up with your own name to make it easier to find your network among other available wireless connections.
  2. In the “Region” line, select your country from the drop-down list.
  3. Save changes by clicking on the appropriate button.

Now you can move on to the next step of setting up Wi-Fi. To do this, go to the “Wireless Protection” subsection, then do the following:

  1. Uncheck the “Disable protection” radio button if it is checked. Leaving this option enabled gives free access to the network to everyone within range of the Wi-Fi signal.
  2. Mark the WPA-Personal /WPA2-Personal section as active.
  3. In the “PSK Password” field, enter the desired password to connect to Wi-Fi. It must consist of at least eight Latin characters.

At this point, the configuration of the wireless network on the WR740n from TP-Link is considered complete.

Configuration in repeater (repeater), amplifier, adapter or access point mode

In cases where the existing wireless network coverage is not enough to meet the needs of users, there is a need to expand it in some way. To do this, go to the main device distributing Wi-Fi). Many Wi-Fi routers are used in this capacity, including TP-Link.

To do this you need:

  1. On the main device in the wireless network configuration, assign a static channel number (the default is “Auto”).
  2. Change the IP address to the WR740n, designed for use as a client. This is necessary to avoid conflict with the main device. However, they must remain in the same address space.
  3. In the “Wireless Settings” section, set the name of the second network and assign a static channel number. It must match the channel number on the main router.
  4. Check the box next to “Enable WDS”.
  5. In the new lines that open, in the SSID item, enter the name of the network to which you plan to connect.
  6. By clicking on the “Search” button, select from the list of available wireless networks the one with which you plan to establish a connection and click on the “Connect” link.
  7. Configure network security by entering the encryption type and password as described in the previous section.
  8. Reboot WR740n.

As an option, flash the TP-Link WR740n using the alternative DD-WRT firmware, which has a “repeater” mode. However, experienced users do not recommend using TP-Link products for this purpose.

IPTV

Currently, most providers, along with the Internet, also provide IPTV digital television service. The WR740n firmware supports it. To configure this feature, you must:

  1. In the “Network” section, go to the “IPTV” subsection.

That's it, the IPTV function on TP-Link is configured.

Individual user connection settings

This functionality is not available in the TP-Link WR740n model.

Dynamic DNS

Users hosting their website or FTP server located outside the router may need “Dynamic DNS”. With its help, it is possible to assign a permanent host name and domain name to a dynamic IP address. Having the TP-Link WR740n at your disposal, this is very easy to do, since this function is implemented there.

To get dynamic DNS, you need to:

  1. In the main menu of the WR740n, go to the section with the same name.
  2. Select your DDNS service provider from the drop-down list.
  3. Enter the username and password provided by the provider and specify the domain name.
  4. Check the “Enable DDNS” checkbox.
  5. Save changes.

In the future, enter and exit DDNS mode using the “Login” and “Exit” buttons.

Security Settings

To prevent possible attacks on the network from the outside, tp-link routers provide a fairly flexible protection system in the form of a built-in firewall. To configure it in the WR740n, you need to open the “Security” section in the main settings menu. In it, carry out basic or advanced configuration of the firewall:

  • enable or disable the firewall (it is enabled by default);
  • configure permissions for VPN tunnels;
  • configure ALG gateway parameters.

In the advanced protection settings it is possible to configure Extra options security, in particular, protection against DoS attacks and other settings.

Parental control

For those who need to control their child’s presence at the computer and their online activity, the WR740n has a parental control function.

To change its parameters, you need to enter the section of the same name from the main menu and do the following:

  • enable/disable parental control function;
  • add/remove rules for selected resources and configure their action schedule.

All bindings for rules are carried out using the MAC address of the child’s computer.

Changing the function of the buttons

This feature is not provided on the WR740n.

Setting up DLNA on the router

This feature requires a USB port on the router, which the WR740n does not have.

Setting up a VPN server

The WR740n works with VPN connections as a client only.

Setting up a torrent client on the router

Many users would like to have such an opportunity, but this is unrealistic on the standard WR740n firmware. You should pay attention to alternative firmware, which are available in sufficient quantities on the Internet. But their use is allowed only at your own peril and risk, without any guarantees correct operation devices.

Setting up the printer

The WR740n model from TP-Link does not have the ability to configure the printer. But if used for printing network printer Having its own IP address, the router will provide access to it along with other devices on the network. It is carried out using a cable connection, and if the printer has Wi-Fi support, then via a wireless network.

Possible malfunctions and ways to eliminate them

Although the WR740n is a reliable device that can operate smoothly for many years, malfunctions do occur. They are mainly associated with errors made during the configuration of the router.

Most frequent problems in the operation of the device that users complain about are:

  1. Unstable operation of the wireless network and low download speed through it. The wired network works fine. Changing the Wi-Fi channel can help solve this problem.
  2. Inability to connect to the WR740n web interface at 192.168.0.1. Most likely, the reason for this situation is changing the IP address of the router to work in a different address space. If it is not possible to install it, a rollback to factory settings will help.
  3. Devices on the network do not see Wi-Fi. This may be due to the wireless network being disabled on the router. Therefore, you need to connect to it via a wired network and enable Wi-Fi in the web interface. If everything is active there, check the network connection settings on remote devices, in particular, whether the wireless network adapter drivers are installed correctly.
  4. There is frequent loss of Internet connection. Updating the WR740n firmware can help solve this problem.

If none of the methods listed above help solve the problem, the cause may lie in physical damage devices. In this case, it is better to contact a service center.

Firmware update

Firmware support in current state is an important point in ensuring reliable operation of the TP-Link WR740n. It is recommended to update it immediately after purchasing the device before initial configuration. To do this, you need to download the latest firmware from the official TP-Link website. Install new firmware possible in two ways.

Via web interface

This is the easiest way to update the firmware, for which you need:

  1. In the main menu, go to the “System Tools” section and select “Firmware Update”.
  2. In the window that appears, open Explorer using the “Browse” button and specify the path to the previously downloaded firmware file.
  3. Click on the “Update” button.

After these steps, the firmware will be updated, after which the router will automatically reboot.

Via mobile application

If you don’t have a computer or laptop at hand, and setting up the WR740n is absolutely necessary, you can do this using a tablet or smartphone. For this purpose, TP-Link has developed a special mobile app called TP-Link Tether. It is supported on Android or IOS devices and is available for download on Google Play and App Store.

The TP-Link Tether program has a user-friendly interface and many functions. With its help, the same actions are carried out as usual through the web interface. However, it does not yet have a function for updating the firmware. But the development of the utility continues and it is likely that such an opportunity will appear in future versions.

Via USB device

This function is not available due to the lack of a corresponding connector on the router.

Resetting the router to factory settings

There are situations when the WR740n starts to work with errors that cannot be corrected using standard methods, or the password to access the device is lost. In this case, resetting the router to factory settings helps; this is done in two steps:

  1. Turn on the device's power.
  2. Press and hold the WPS/RESET button on the back panel of the router for at least 10 seconds.

Evidence that the operation was successful is that all indicators on the front panel of the WR740n light up. After this, release the WPS/RESET button.

If access to the router’s web interface is not lost, a reset to factory settings is carried out by going to the system tools section to the appropriate item and clicking on the “Restore” button.

Conclusion

Obviously, the TP-Link TL WR740n router is recommended for building a home wireless network or small office network.
