Introduction

Recently, Philips, it seems to me, is a little behind in the development of a line of expensive smartphones in the operating room. Android system and more and more releases budget devices. Some devices turn out to be quite successful, while for some it is quite difficult to determine even positioning. For example, the new W3500 has a relatively large diagonal - 5 inches, but the resolution remains low - 480x854 pixels, and the matrix is not IPS. The processor is not bad, but "there are not enough stars from the sky." There is a 5 MP camera, but it does not have autofocus. Android Version also not the last - 4.2.

In general, I would like to say that the W3500 model is average in absolutely all respects, and it is difficult for me personally to determine the positioning, for example. I think the announcement is correct.

Design, dimensions, controls

In the introduction, I already said that the device, from my point of view, is strange, considering all its parameters. The device is also strange in terms of design: Philips usually has poor technical characteristics, but the original appearance smartphones. The W3500 gadget looks rather primitive compared to the W7555, W8510 and even the W8500. The front side, side faces and back panel are black, the material is semi-gloss plastic. It is non-staining, but fingerprints are still visible on back cover, and on protective glass. The front side of the device is really protected by a durable glass, since not a single scratch or chip appeared on it during the month of active use.

A thin plastic strip runs along the edge. It forms a small ledge on the front panel, thereby protecting the screen from external influences in the case when the device is placed on any horizontal surface.

The shape of Philips W3500 is almost rectangular, the edges are slightly smoothed. Dimensions - 142x73x9.6 mm, and weighs 170 grams. Frankly, it is not entirely clear where the "kilograms" come from: the case is plastic, the battery is small, the dimensions are common for many 5-inch gadgets. It lies well in the hand thanks to the slightly sloping ends of the back side.

Despite not the thinnest case in terms of numbers (almost a centimeter), the W3500 does not feel thick, I would say that it is quite slim and fit.

Assembly is ok. During testing, no “jambs” were revealed: the device does not creak, the lid does not play, and does not crunch when twisted. Perhaps the back panel bends a little to the battery. However, this is not critical, since it does not affect ergonomics in any way.

By the way, the plastic here is not painted from above, but completely. Scratches will be almost invisible.

On the front side, there are light and proximity sensors, a front camera and a speaker at the top. The volume of the speaker is high, the interlocutor is heard well, there is no rattling and echo. Mostly high frequencies are heard, without low and medium ones. You are also heard well, without extraneous sounds.

Below the display are typical android buttons. They are marked on the body with white paint. There is no backlight, so at night you will have to determine them blindly.

At the bottom there is a microphone and a hole where the crossbar is located, for which you can hook the strap. Top - 3.5 mm audio output and micro-USB. The power button is on the right just above the center. It is comfortable to use, has a minimum stroke, a clear and hard pressing. A volume rocker key similar in parameters, located on the left side of the device.

On the back: a flash, a speakerphone, a camera that rises slightly above the body.

To remove the cover, it must be hooked on the recess on the lower left end. Top - slots for SIM1 / SIM2 standard size miniSIM, on the right is a slot for a microSD memory card.

Comparative dimensions:

Philips W3500 and Fly Universe

Display

The main feature of this model is the screen diagonal, increased to 5 inches. I perceive such dimensions only in two cases: the display matrix must be either IPS or have a high resolution. In this case, the matrix is not IPS, with mediocre viewing angles, under which colors are distorted, brightness and contrast are reduced. The resolution is also low - 480x854 pixels. Pixelation is not particularly visible, but due to the poor quality of the matrix, the picture does not look the best.

The backlight brightness of the screen matrix is low, it is only enough to view the image in the shade or indoors, since the picture completely fades in the sun.

The capacitive-type touch layer works out only up to 2 simultaneous touches. Sensitivity is slightly above average.

Below are photos showing the viewing angles of the screen:

Battery

The capacity of the 2200 mAh lithium-ion battery (type AB2200AWML, 8.14 Wh) I do not think is large, Philips has a Xenium line. However, for this model with a low screen resolution and an unproductive chip, this is quite enough to function for about a day and a half.

In the video playback mode (MP4, 720p) at maximum brightness and volume in the headphones, the battery sat down after about 6 hours. If you use 3G, make about 10-15 calls lasting 1-2 minutes, “take a picture” for 20 minutes, then the battery will run out in 15 hours.

Charger weak, so the battery charges for four hours. From USB - even longer.

In the settings, you can set the display of information about the battery as a percentage.

Communication options

Smartphone operates in cellular networks 2G (GSM/GPRS/EDGE, 900/1800 MHz) and 3G (900/2100 MHz).

Available Bluetooth version 3.0 for file and voice transfer. Present wireless connection Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11 b/g/n. The device, of course, can be used as an access point (Wi-Fi Hotspot) or modem.

Memory and memory card

Like most of these devices, W3500 is equipped with 1 GB of RAM. On average, about 700 MB are free, which is very good. Flash memory is 4 GB, but, as always, much less is available: 1 "gig" went to install applications, and 1.7 - to store data.

Has a card slot microSD memory. Its maximum capacity can be 32 GB.

Camera

The smartphone is equipped with two camera modules: the main one with 5 MP without autofocus (aperture F2.8), the front one also without focusing, but with 2 MP. There is a flash, but its effectiveness is reduced to zero when it comes to photos at a distance of more than 30 centimeters.

The picture quality corresponds to the cameras used in cheap mobile phones: poor detail, dynamic range behavior in direct sunlight. The only good thing is the white balance.

Video device writes in FullHD resolution at 30 frames per second. The picture is not bad, but it is felt that the lens has no focus - the sharpness leaves much to be desired. The sound is clear but mono.

EXIF information

Video file characteristic:

  • File Format: 3gp
  • Video codec: MPEG-4, 17 Mbps
  • Resolution: 1920 x 1080, 30 fps
  • Audio codec: AAC, 128 Kbps
  • Channels: 1 channel, 48 kHz

Examples of photos on the main camera:

Sample photo on the front camera:

Performance and software platform

Most of these devices have a Taiwanese MediaTek chip. Smartphone Philips W3500 is no exception. It uses the most common among "state employees" in Lately chipset MT6582: Cortex-A7 processor, 28 nm, 4 cores at 1.3 GHz, graphics accelerator Mali-400MP2 clocked at 400 MHz.

For comfortable operation of the device, this processor is more than enough. There are problems with games, but only with powerful ones like Asphalt 8. The device does not bug, does not slow down, and works relatively smoothly.

Brief information about the phone and performance tests ( Antutu Benchmark, Quadrant Standard):

The device, apparently, took a long time to reach the market, since the inscription “Android 4.2” looks strange today, given the presence of 4.3 and 4.4. There is no proprietary shell.

Pros: Large screen, 2-sim cards mini, speed, functionality, good battery life. Initially charged at 75%, the battery in the active study and settings mode with connected wi-fi, 3G and 2 SIM cards lasted about 8 hours. The full volume of the speaker during a call, for me, is subjectively excessive, but you can always turn it down to the desired level. A small viewing angle of the display for myself I consider a huge plus, because. I don’t really like the excessive curiosity of others, in particular when someone tries to look over my shoulder. I was pleased with the presence of a protective film in the package, a trifle but nice, but unfortunately not a single online store offers such an option in the description, everyone has it in the process of buying and clarifying the package. Disadvantages: before buying carefully studied those. characteristics and got acquainted with a number of reviews, had an idea of what I was getting. Instead of the declared built-in memory of 4GB, my copy has 2GB of which 1.5 GB are occupied by built-in applications. Not enough extra accessories are on sale, but this is rather the sluggishness of third-party manufacturers, rather than the shortcomings of the phone. Otherwise, for me, there are no shortcomings yet. Comment: I took the phone for calls, sms, light surfing the Internet, periodic communication in social networks. networks, navigation and reading books. The phone successfully copes with my tasks at 100%. The presence of 2 SIM cards of mini size, the transition to a micro SIM card is difficult for me, because. one is corporate and replacing it with another format is fraught with some difficulties for me. Transferring contacts went smoothly. Installed navigation "Navitel" (demo version), and also transferred the Pro-city license from another smartphone, routes, traffic jams, cameras, etc. works fine, cold start about 10-15 sec. (Navitel is a little faster). The brightness of the screen is enough for comfortable work in sunny weather. Photos of tolerable quality, reshoot the document without problems, everything is readable, digital zoom works while shooting video. To say that the manufacturer could, with such hardware stuffing, supplement the camera with autofocus, front camera increase megapixels, a more impressive body, a brighter screen, etc. I don't see the point, because all of the above will significantly increase the cost of the phone itself. For this price range, it is well worth it. Special thanks to David / Arstayl for the review this smartphone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vR9nCqcwxtM thanks to which I finally decided on the choice, and also learned about the configuration and additional accessories.

I have been using this machine for over 4 years. People say that modern smartphones they don't live that long, but they don't. Naturally, this is not a gaming flagship, but it copes with everyday tasks quite successfully. Opens all modern applications and does not hang. Survived a few pretty hard falls and escaped with only a breakdown of the thin plastic edging around the screen. Although it does not belong to the "xenium" line, the battery even after 4 years holds for 1-2 days. The main disadvantages are 2: the camera is terrible, that is the back, that the front. Not suitable for shooting text, images are faded and not clear. Memory is catastrophically small. Only 1 GB is available for installing applications. This amount is not enough even for updates of pre-installed programs. Unlike a camera, the problem can be solved without a soldering iron by combining internal memory using the firmware.

In general, the device is excellent, if it weren’t for the battery, I would have walked with it for another 5 years, but the battery just drains sooo quickly, I bought a portable battery, but the phone sits down faster than it charges. It has been in use for a year now, and in order to charge 100% it needs 7-8 hours ...

Advantages: I already wrote a review here, I will list the advantages once again: Large screen, two sim cards ... and that's it ... The sensor works even with a broken screen! A HUGE PLUS, IN COMPARISON WITH THE SAME SONY.

Cons: For a little over a year, the phone worked perfectly, not a scratch on the screen, until it fell hard the first time. The screen immediately cracked, then it fell a second time, the third, fourth, as a result, there were about 7 cracks on the screen, but you can see everything is fine, even with cracks, and besides, it continues to work. Replacing the battery did not help with the problem of a short phone operation ... very sorry.

I love. Few drawbacks compared to other androids. I am very satisfied with the phone, and in general I love Philips, they are durable. Once I dropped the phone, it all shattered, nothing, I put it back together, it continues to work))

Pros: Great phone. I use six months, does not slow down, does not lag. I use common applications: skype, livejournal, contact, sberbank, calendar, dictionary, calculator, etc., everything works, no complaints. I have not tried toys, they are not interested. Holds a charge for a day, charges pretty quickly. Two cameras - front and back. The back one shoots well for the phone, there is a flash, even during the video it can burn.

Disadvantages: The interlocutor sometimes hears poorly when talking on the phone, perhaps because the screen is large, the microphone is far from the mouth. Lately it has been slowing down, but a reboot seems to have solved the problem.

In general, the device suits if it held a larger charge ((((replacing the battery may help.

Advantages: 1) I don’t know who says that the build quality is bad, supposedly the phone is crumbling, I have a phone in use for a month for a year and it is still in perfect condition, but the case is very easily soiled, all prints remain. 2) The phone is very powerful, the reaction is instant, I compared 2 phones when choosing which phone to take. I chose between LG L7 as far as I remember and Philips W3500. Compared to this phone, LG is a wild brake! he even buggy in the menu. I immediately took Philips myself. And I don't regret it. Until now, the phone works perfectly, it does not buggy))) 3) 2 sim cards - very convenient. 4) Big screen. Perhaps that's where the benefits end.

Disadvantages: 1) The main drawback, very critical for me, is that the phone holds a charge very little. In active use mode, it lasts 4 hours, in moderate mode - 8 hours. I think this is very little. Carrying 2 phones with me in case the battery suddenly runs out on this one ...) Even when I put the phone on charge, it discharges faster than it charges!!! 2) As already mentioned above - Camera. At close shooting 0 points. When you need to take a picture of the text - the phone is not your assistant. 3) After half a year of use, some kind of failure occurred on my phone, and now it does not connect to the computer. Does not offer offers USB connection. I've looked all over the internet and haven't found an answer. And HARD RESET did - does not help. It seems to be all.

In principle, the phone is good for its money, and if it weren’t for the mainland, I would put 4.

Advantages: a powerful phone on antutu is more powerful than the asus nexus 7. The battery is not bad for a day without a break in 3g. Igruhi all rod. The ability to transfer applications to a flash drive. I would even say that there is protection against water (fell into a bucket of water). Never glitched. Oh loud. Not killed.

Disadvantages: there are also enough shortcomings - after half a year the mainland burned down and was replaced under warranty. after the repair, the sound became very quiet. - the bar around the screen began to peel off and break, and then the screen. - android is not updated - TFT screen - Mouzon in headphones is just awful even in expensive ones.

I described in detail the cons, few pluses. I know that you will read mostly about the cons. In fact, this is a great phone, I'm glad that I got a cool smart phone for such a price.

Pros: Looks good, decent picture, decent battery life. Does not slow down, everything plays, everything plays, everything is installed - in short good smartphone especially for that kind of money.

Disadvantages: For a couple of months of work, it hung tightly three times. I realized only after the second time that it absolutely cannot be discharged to the end. If it turns off from discharging, then it is very difficult to revive it later (get the battery, etc.). Big jamb - no autofocus on the photo. Those. whether the photo will turn out or not - is not known. In most cases, it turns out quite a decent photo, but small objects or shooting at close range is not for him. It doesn't read barcodes at all. Weak speaker, not perfectly audible at the time of the conversation. Terrible vibration - you don't feel it at all in your jacket pocket.

The smartphone is wonderful. Thanks to the 5-inch screen, it can easily replace any tablet. Video playback quality is excellent. Pages turn over one after another instantly, do not freeze. I was pleased with the presence of 2 sim cards of a standard size (it would be problematic for me to change to micro). The camera of the device is 5 million pixels, the most pleasant thing is that there is a flash! And, of course, the most important thing - a battery from the "Xenium" category! It is thanks to her that the w3500 does not let me down, the charge level is always on top. Moreover, the smartphone has a function to save energy in addition (in fact, the brightness of the display will change). This is my first Philips smartphone for me! And I'm sure not the last! After all, quality and design is what I always choose!
