Is it possible to delete the temp folder? I, too, once asked this question, I thought, why do I need it at all - is this a folder on the computer? Every week on the computer, disk space (C:) disappeared somewhere. And what do you think? The temp folder was to blame for everything. It became more and more, and there was less and less free memory.

Later I found out that this is just a temporary folder, and there are no important files for the computer in it, it can be deleted without harm to the system. I would even say it is necessary, there is not one temp folder on the computer, but several, and they all take up memory. Now I’ll tell you in detail and show you what this folder is used for in the system, and how to delete it correctly.

Why do you need a temp folder on your computer?

Programs are unpacked into the temp folder for further installation on the computer. Almost all programs are packed (compressed) to reduce their size; when you run the program installer, the files are unpacked for further installation. Simply put, it stores everything that is no longer needed, just garbage. This means you can safely delete the TEMP folder.

How to delete the temp folder correctly?

We delete not the folder itself, but its contents - this can be done manually, it is usually located in these places:

  1. C:\Windows\Temp
  2. C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Temp
  3. C:\Users\All Users\TEMP
  4. C:\Users\All Users\TEMP
  5. C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Temp

Only one important note, if you are still using XP, then in this operating system there is no Users folder, there is no Document and Settings for it, but otherwise everything is absolutely the same.

In rare cases, programs themselves create such a folder, and we do not know its location, but Windows has built-in garbage removal tools, including cleaning the temp folder. About complete removal garbage I already had an article, using this method I deleted 20 gigabytes of junk, including all the temp folders scattered throughout the computer.

In the article about extreme cleaning everything is already written about deleting the temp folder, but in short, you need to do the following:

  • Go to the properties of drive C (right button->Property)
  • Press the “Disk Cleanup” button (the system will think a little)
  • The “Delete” button will complete the matter

In the Windows 7 and Windows 8 operating systems there are folders for storing temporary files of games and programs - Temp. When you correctly turn off the program, the temporary files are deleted, but if the work is stopped incorrectly (the lights are turned off, etc.), then the files remain on the computer and will have to be deleted manually.

Is it possible to delete the Temp folder? No you can not! You can delete all the files located in it, but not the folder itself, otherwise the programs will not be able to install.

Temp folder

In order to clean the Temp folder in Windows 7 and Windows 8, you need to find it. To do this, open “Computer”, then “Local Disk C” - “Windows” - “Temp”. In this folder, select all the files and delete them.

If a message appears stating that a file cannot be deleted, skip it. This means that it was launched by the program and if you shut down correctly, it will delete itself.

This is how we clean the Temp folder in Windows 7, 8.

The second folder for storing temporary files is AppData Local Temp. Since it is hidden, you first need to enable the display of hidden files. To do this, go to Control Panel - Appearance and Personalization - Folder Options - go to the "View" tab. Check the box at the very bottom “Show hidden files, folders and disks." Click OK.

Only now we can find the AppData folder. You need to follow the following path: “Computer” - “Local Disk C” - Users - Username (Admin, Petya, Vasya, etc.) - AppData - Local - Temp.

Select all the files in the Temp folder and delete them. If something cannot be deleted, then we simply skip these files.

Operating systems from Microsoft are quite stable and fast in operation, since their functioning involves special scripts and programs. After successful installation, Windows creates system directories on the computer, which ensure not only stability, but also speed of recall. Of course, performance greatly depends on the power of the hardware, but the system that controls your computer plays a significant role.

In the operating room Windows system, a system directory is provided in which the system stores files of a special format in order to later use this for speed of access to the most popular and frequently opened files. This is temp, which is located in the Windows folder itself. You don't need to install it to access it. additional programs, you can use the standard explorer by following the path: c/windows/temp. When you open the directory, you will see a lot of files if the system has been actively used before.

Why are the files in the temp folder needed?

Most files located in Windows cannot be edited or deleted, and if this happens, the operation of the system can be disrupted almost instantly. But this factor does not apply to temp, or to be more precise, to the files located in it. All of them that are in this folder can be safely deleted, and the system does not prohibit this. As for the temp folder itself, things are different here. It is strictly forbidden to delete this directory, since in the future Windows will use it for the correct operation of the OS. Files are created and written automatically to the temp directory from various applications and resources stored on the computer, allowing for a more optimized and smooth system operation.

Cleaning the temp directory

There is no need to frequently delete files from the temp folder, since you will not feel the difference. It is better to do this in case of excessive filling hard drive on which the system is located. Checking the size of the temp directory is very simple. Go to Windows folder and by right-clicking on the catalog, select the properties department.
A window opens.
Wait until the system collects the data and gives you the total weight of all files that are saved in this catalog.
If you consider it necessary, you can erase all data. To speed up this process, open the temp folder, and press the following sequence of buttons on the keyboard: ctrl + a, all files will be selected automatically, to delete, press Delete. This way, you will clear your system's cache, freeing up space on your hard drive for storing files.
Most programs for optimizing and cleaning Windows are not able to remove them from the temp folder, since this is considered a malfunction of the OS. Therefore, it is better to manually monitor the accumulation of files in the temp directory and promptly delete unnecessary ones.

Windows 10, like its predecessors, has the amazing ability to accumulate a bunch of junk files and remnants of long-deleted applications. All this can be aggravated by viruses that accumulate during work. And despite the fact that the operating system has its own resources for automatically removing garbage, they must still be activated, and to fully believe in cleanliness and order, periodically clean the computer manually.

How to clean your Windows 10 computer from junk using an application

A bad feature of the Temp folder is that only those files that the system has assessed as temporary are stored in it. But Windows 10 is not omnipotent and it does not consider a large amount of system garbage as such and leaves it lying in place. You can, of course, remove all this junk manually, carefully searching through the dark corners of your system, but it will be much easier and more practical to download a special application that can clean everything in just a couple of clicks.

Cleaning the system using third party application, we will look at an example CCleaner programs, which is the simplest and most powerful among all its analogues.

  1. Download the free CCleaner utility from this link and install it.

When finished, restart your computer and delete your backups

Cleaning the system from viruses

In addition to system garbage and forgotten files, there may be more unpleasant things, more unpleasant things that it wouldn’t hurt to get rid of. And even if you already have an antivirus, this does not guarantee you protection from all sorts of nasty things and may require checking with a program from alternative developers.

To download an antivirus, it is not at all necessary to shell out money for a full-fledged edition or surf torrents. Many security software developers provide free versions your programs that don’t even need to be installed on your computer.

  1. Download free antivirus Dr. Web CureIt.
  2. Launch the downloaded application and accept the license. There is no need to worry about passwords and personal data; the antivirus will not send such information to the server.
  3. Start the scan, it will take some time.
  4. When the antivirus scans the entire computer, neutralize everything it finds.

Even after activating automatic removal of temporary files, do not forget to periodically clean your computer with your own hands, since standard means Windows is far from omnipotent. And if you start to notice a gradual decline in performance and a long system loading time when you turn on the computer, it’s time to repeat a couple of points from the above.
