Preparation

To get started, we need:

1. Paint Tool SAI (1 or 2)

2. Picture drawn on A4 or taken from the Internet. (It is better to draw on A4 to raise your artistic level.)

We drag our image into the program.

Create a vector layer.

Select Curve and choose a thickness. (The most optimal is from 1.6 to 3).

Drawing

We begin to outline the black lines.

Try not to do exactly the same, but add your own adjustments to your drawing. Otherwise, it can turn out very badly :)

We make changes and it's ready, we move on to coloring.

To do this, we need to create a new layer.

Drag it under the “Vector 1” layer.

Go to vector 1 and click on “Magic Wand”.

We start to select the area of what we want to paint over (it's best to work separately, for example, separate the layers into Hair, clothes, skin).

Let's start with the hair and select the area that we want to paint over.

We look at the errors and also gloss over the magician. stick.

Go to the "Hair" layer, press fill and choose the color you want. And apply color to the selected area.

Now let's add highlights and shadows to make everything look human.

To do this, in the "Hair" layer, select the airbrush tool, size from 35 to 50. (You can also choose less)

Optimal settings for shadows and highlights.

After you are done with shadows and highlights, you need to deselect.

Erase like an eraser.

Let's move on to the clothes as well, create a new layer and select the area.

For my case, it is better to work on each thing separately.

Coloring and drawing shadows.

For example, I will use the lineart of my OS

Step 2: Paint over the area inside the lineart

You can do this by taking a pen and starting painting by hand, but it will take a long time. I'll show you a way to save your precious time
Go to the line art layer and select "Selection source" a little higher in the layers window. Your layer will highlight in green.

Then make a new layer under your line art and fill it with some color using the Bucket tool. A bright color will work better.

Now select the Wand tool. In the settings under tools you will see something like "Detection mode" and "Target". Select "Transparency (strict))" and "Selection source". Set the transparency slider to the minimum value or even to zero.

Go back to the layer you filled with the bright color and click with the Magic Wand tool somewhere outside the lineart. This area will turn blue (Blue in SAI indicates the selection area).

Clue:
If something is also selected inside the lineart, press CTRL + D (deselect) and try setting the slider to a lower transparency value. If the transparency is already at zero, then there is a gap in the outline of your line art and you need to close it if you want to work in this technique.

Now press CTRL+X

Now you should check the result and manually wipe the imperfections on the small details of the line art.

Now your line art is colored and it's time to move on to the main colors.

Step 3: Layer Clipping

What is layer clipping? When a layer is clipped by another layer, it takes up the same transparent areas as the one below it. This means that if you draw something on the bottom layer and then start drawing on the top layer, it will only show the visible area from the bottom layer.

Now to apply the primary colors to the lineart, create layers on top of the bright color layer and assign a "clipping group" to them. Your paint layers will be cut off by the bright color layer, and no matter how carefully you apply the paint, it will still not go beyond the lineart

My name is Chizu.
Let's get acquainted!
I will tell you about what a vector layer is in the SAI program, about the tools for this layer, and also teach you how to use them.
Pictures are clickable.

For starters, SAI itself:
- -

To create a new document, click File > New, set the size of the canvas, OK.

As promised, I will introduce you to the vector layer. To create it, you need to click on the button, which I marked with a red diamond:
- -

Look here. It is important! These are the tools:
- -

Pen - pen. With it, you can draw a contour, and then just fix those places that you think didn’t work out.
Eraser - eraser.
Weight - with this tool you can change the thickness of the line by clicking on it.
- -
Color - with this tool you can change the color of the line.
- -
Edit - more on that later.
Pressure - with this tool you can change the thickness of a particular section of the line. To do this, you need to hover over the point you want to change and move it left or right.
- -
Select / Deselect - Select / Remove the selection of the area.
Curve/Line - smooth curved line/broken curved line.
- -

Now more about the Edit tool. Here's what he can do:
- -
Select segments - by clicking on points or line segments, you select them in order to perform some other actions on them - for example, change the thickness of the segments. When selected, segments are highlighted in red.
Move (Hold Ctrl + Left Mouse Button) - by clicking on a point, you can move it around the canvas.
- -
Deform (Hold Shift + LMB, drag in the desired direction) - with this tool the entire line is changed.
- -
Delete a point \ segment - this, I think, is understandable.
On off. Macro deformation points (to be honest, I didn’t have to use it - I don’t know what it is and why it is needed.)
Move line - the same as "Move" with the only difference that we move not a point, but the whole line.
- -
Duplicate - this tool duplicates lines.
Connect lines (Shift+Ctrl) - just like you merge objects in a folder by selecting them with the mouse, you can also connect the ends of two lines here.
Delete line (Shift + Ctrl + Alt) - understandable, right?
The Angularity Switcher is a tool that will help you make a sharp corner rounded and vice versa.
- -

Get to know the tools. Phew!
=D

How does this help draw a beautiful line? If you still don't understand, I'll tell you.
Usually I do not use the pen - it makes too many unnecessary points, which then either delete or move. Both are long and tedious. Therefore, I use the Curve tool to create the line. A line with this tool is drawn in the same way as in regular Paint, with the difference that in SAI the number of points on one line is unlimited, and they can be corrected at any time.
If you can’t draw a picture with a vector from scratch, make a sketch on a piece of paper, take a picture or scan it, and then circle it on top, on a new layer. I always do this)

Hmm... Well, comrades. I hope this information is not useless.
Here's what usually happens to me:

-
And you should be just as good! =Z

If something is not clear, you have the right to ask, but I have no right not to answer you =Z

On different platforms. Of course, the most popular program was and remains Photoshop. However, the developers have not forgotten about those who want to draw on a computer, but do not feel much desire to understand a huge number of functions and a rather complicated interface. For such users, editors have been created, which, in fact, are simplified versions of Photoshop. Among them is the recently released development of Japanese specialists from SYSTEMAX Paint Tool Sai. Its first version was published in 2006. About how to draw in Paint Tool Sai, our article. But first, let's detailed description the program itself.

Paint Tool Sai editor. Possibilities

The main advantage of this editor is that there is absolutely nothing superfluous in it. As in the Photoshop editor, working with images in this program is carried out using layers, which, of course, is extremely convenient. The possibilities of toning and color correction are not as wide as in Photoshop, but for creating sketches and draft drawings, the tools are quite enough. Pleases and quite large Drawings in Paint Tool Sai can be created using a graphics tablet. Support for these devices is implemented in the editor just brilliant.

The selected tool follows the mouse as accurately as possible, and the strokes are even smoother than in Photoshop. This makes the program indispensable for artists who create comics.

The editor interface is not particularly beautiful, but it is simple and accessible. Hotkeys are provided for almost any function of the program, which can save the user a huge amount of time.

Basic Tools Paint Tool Sai

We will talk about how to draw in the Paint Tool Sai below. First, let's get acquainted with the editor's tools. It is not as wide as in Photoshop, but for quick creation drawings and high-quality photo processing is quite sufficient. There are only eight main tools in the program:

  1. Magic wand tool. They can immediately select large areas of the picture, painted in one color.
  2. Lasso tool. Using it, you can make selections of the required area of complex shape.
  3. Rectangular Selection Tool. The tool is intended, as the name already implies, to limit rectangular areas.
  4. Scaling. For convenience, the image can be enlarged or reduced.
  5. Eyedropper tool.
  6. Moving the canvas.
  7. Canvas rotation. If necessary, the image can be expanded.
  8. Moving a layer.

If desired, you can switch to one of two layer editing modes - raster and vector.

Raster tools

Drawing in Paint Tool Sai in raster mode is possible using the following tools:

  • marker
  • airbrush;
  • tool "Water";
  • tool "Acrylic";
  • pens;
  • tool "Watercolor";
  • brushes;
  • pencil
  • fills;
  • the paper tool;
  • eraser.

In addition, there are various variations of these funds.

Vector tools

Tool Sai in vector mode? To create such images, this editor provides such tools as "Line", "Curve", "Polyline", "Line Modifier", "Pen", "Line Thickness Modifier", editing, pressure and line color, selection and its removal .

Additional features of the program

If desired, third-party brushes and canvas textures can be installed in Paint Tool Sai. You can also create them using the editor itself. The program opens not only sketches made with its use, but also files of other formats (tga, jpeg, png, bmp). It is also possible to work with images created in the Photoshop editor and saved in psd format.

How to draw in Paint Tool Sai?

In the event that you need to draw a soft, smooth line, you should take the Pen tool. Clear with visible pixels are done with a pencil. To create "shaggy" designed "Airbrush". When you need to make a line with a smooth start and end, you should use a brush. You can create selections not only with the Lasso and Rectangular Selection tools, but also with the Selection handle. If necessary, it is easy to remove it with a similar deselect tool. In order to paint a large area, select it and use the Fill tool.

Now let's talk about how to draw in Paint Tool Sai in vector mode. Unfortunately, the vector lines created by means of this program lose their sharpness when enlarged. However, you can bend them by moving the nodes, just as you can in Draw them with the Pen tool, which is similar to a bitmap. If desired, the line thickness can be changed in one click. This is what the Thickness tool is for. You can draw both smooth (Curve) and broken lines (Polyline). The Line Modifier tool is designed to adjust the line itself or its nodes.

The colors required for coloring can be selected on the color palette located at the top of the program. You can select the desired shade using the Eyedropper tool.

How to install brushes and textures?

Now let's see how to install Tool Sai. First of all, you need to unpack the archive with brushes and open the folder with the editor. Next, the brush shape (bmp format) is installed in the blotmap folder. Then you should open in any text editor(for example, in the Notepad program) the brushform.conf file and enter l.blotmap/name.bmp there, where name is the name of the file with the brush. We save the file in the same folder. Now you can start using the downloaded brushes. Having drawn them yourself, you just need to save them in bmp format. Further, the procedure is the same.

Textures in this program are downloaded in almost the same way. Unpack the archive and open the folder with Paint Tool Sai. Next, copy the texture files to the clipboard and upload them to the brushtex folder. Open the brushtex.conf file in a text editor and write l.brushtex/name.bmp in it. Instead of name we put the name of the texture. We save the file and use it to create original images. You can draw a texture in the same way as a brush, in the Paint program Tool Sai. In this case, the file is also saved in bmp format.

We hope in in general terms now you understand how to use the Paint Tool Sai. The program is extremely simple, and it will not be difficult for a person familiar with other graphic raster or vector editors to understand its functionality. And it will not be difficult for a beginner to draw with its help.

At the request of the workers, I am writing a guide for Paint Tool SAI.
I will mainly analyze brush settings and other purely technical points. And, as they say, from scratch. :)
As for anatomy, construction and other things, I recommend this selection on Equestria Daily, because my pony proportions are non-canonical and, in general, the author's style in all fields. :)
So ... (carefully, there are quite a lot of letters and pictures under the cut)

We start, as usual, by creating a new file. File>New or Ctrl+N, everything is standard.
It is better to set the file size to be larger, 2000x2000 or more (depending on the capabilities of the computer), Resolution is not less than 300 pixel / inch, so that you can calmly draw small details without soap and pixelation. In the end, too large a raster image can easily be reduced or cropped, but the consequences of stretching a small one are likely to be sad.
So, we have a blank canvas and toolbars. Now a little about them:

Navigation.

Everything is simple here - navigation window, zoom (slider and buttons +, - and reset) and canvas rotation (the functions are the same).

Layers.

Subsection paint effects allows you to set the texture and effect for the selected layer.
Drop down menu mode you can choose the mode in which the layer will interact with the underlying ones.
Here, for example, how the same blue line will look like when changing the parameters of the layer on which it is located:

Opacity, respectively, sets the transparency of the selected layer.
Blend mode and transparency combinations are very useful for creating different effects. For example, to draw sun rays, you can take a luminosity layer with low transparency (10 percent). Thus, the drawn rays will not overlap the objects in the picture, but will only gently highlight them.
In general, this is one of those features that are best understood by typing. You can create an interesting effect quite by accident. :)
Below is a list of layers. They can be swapped by dragging and hidden by clicking on the eye icon next to the layer name. The active layer is highlighted in purple.

Colors.

Everything is simple - the color selection panel. If it doesn't appear on your first run, select Window>Color Wheel from the menu.

Management and selected colors.

Here, too, everything is standard - selection with a rectangle, free selection, “magic wand”, moving a layer or selected area, rotating, “hand” for moving and “eyedropper” for color matching.

Brushes and their settings.

And here it is worth stopping in more detail. Of course, SAI has a set of standard tools, but you don't have to use them "as is". Each of them is freely customizable to the needs of the artist.

The first in the list is the blending mode (similar to the layer blending mode) and the choice of egde shape - the shape of the edges of the brush.
These "brush edges" allow you to give the stroke a pronounced shape or make it blurry:

Then adjust the size of the brush - Size. Here, I think, everything is clear.
Next - MIn. Size, minimum size. When drawing on a tablet, the pen responds to pressure, so you can control the thickness of the line. With a minimum brush size of 0%, the line thickness will vary from very thin to the maximum (that is, the size specified above), at 100% it will not change at all.

The Density parameter sets the transparency of the line.

Then there are two drop-down menus in which you can select the shape of the brush (by default - simple circle) and the texture for it (accordingly, the default is no texture).

The next three options are Blendind, Dilution and Persistence.
Blending controls how the brush color blends with the rest of the colors present on the layer.

Dilution"dilutes" the paint. That is, at the maximum value of this parameter, the color will begin to appear only by mixing with adjacent shades.

Persistence responsible for the "fastness" of the color when mixed.

Check mark "keep opacity" is responsible for how to consider the standard background - white or "transparent". This will affect the mixing of paints. As far as I know, it works a little differently in different versions programs.

Then go "Advanced settings":
Quality- Responsible for the quality of the stroke. Of course, it is better to set this parameter to the maximum, but on a weak computer this will cause lags or even freezes of the program (especially if a large brush size is selected).
Egde Hardness- clarity of the edges of the stroke.
Min density- minimum transparency. This parameter allows more control over the transparency of the line.
Max Dens Prs- the same, but adjusts the dependence of transparency on the pen pressure of the tablet. That is, if you set this parameter to 0, then even with the slightest pressure on the pen, SAI will produce the most opaque line. At 100%, for this you will have to noticeably press the pen.
Hard - Soft adjusts the pen sensitivity.
Check marks Dens, Size And Blend you can mark the actions for which pressing the pen is responsible. If all of them are checked, pressing harder makes the stroke less transparent, as wide as possible, and allows you to adjust the degree of color blending. Dens means transparency, size means size, and blend means blending.

Some useful combinations keyboards and other little things
Ctrl+T - transform the selected fragment. If nothing is selected, the entire layer is taken. To apply the transformation, you need to press Enter, to cancel - Esc.
Ctrl+E - merge the active layer with the previous one. It is convenient on the “finish line”, when you need to process various details on the little things and fix the jambs.
As for the jambs, there is one trick that can help you see your mistakes if your eye is blurry. The Canvas menu has a Flip Hoizontally feature that flips your drawing. Building problems are immediately apparent. Maybe not all, but the most rude for sure.
SAI, of course, does not have a large set of filters, but the Filter>Hue and Saturation function can help you adjust the color gamut. Also, as I said, you can use different layers with low transparency - this sometimes gives unexpected results. :)

Well, it seems basic functions listed. :)
I hope this impromptu guide is of some help. If you have questions, comments and slippers - write in the comments.
If needed, I can try to write a more specific guide for painting, working with layers, and so on.
