Recall that we called it an excellent working tool, which still should have been a little “pulled up” in order to remain completely without flaws. In particular, few people will be satisfied with his time battery life, although in our case we were simply dealing with an instance that came with a low-capacity battery. However, as an option, you can purchase a modification with a more capacious battery, and instead of optical drive install a second battery.

Today we are dealing with a direct competitor of T61 - Dell Latitude D630. After a 20-minute acquaintance with this laptop, it becomes clear that it differs very little from the Lenovo ThinkPad. Judge for yourself: both are based on the same processor and chipset, both have an NVIDIA Quadro NVS family video card, the screen diagonal of the devices is also identical - 14.1″, as well as a very rare working resolution of 1440 × 900. Both models have a TrackPoint (albeit in different colors) and both allow you to remove the optical drive to replace it with a blank or a second battery.

Of course, there are differences, but they will be discussed below. In the meantime, let's take a closer look at the configuration of the D630.

As part of the Latitude series, Dell releases a special class of laptops focused on use in a professional environment. Is it any wonder that the company is especially closely monitoring the quality of workmanship, as well as the packaging? In addition, these mobile computers are equipped with very interesting components.

The laptop is based on the processor Intel Core 2 Duo latest generation. Its clock speed is 2.0 GHz and the system bus is 800 MHz. It is the entry-level model in Intel's updated mobile CPU family with 4MB L2 cache. Exactly the same chip was installed in the previously reviewed Lenovo T61. The same goes for the chipset. Intel PM965 is used as this, which we briefly described in the Fujitsi Siemens AMILO Xi2528 review.

The memory capacity is 2 GB, which is this moment is the manufacturer's maximum. So much should be enough for you to perform the vast majority of tasks even under Windows Vista. Note that the modules operate in dual-channel mode and at the maximum frequency (667 MHz). Thus, maximum efficiency is achieved when working with the memory subsystem.

The rest of the features are also very impressive. The video card, as you can see, is installed weaker than that of the T61. We are talking about NVIDIA Quadro NVS 135M, while Lenovo was based on 140M. The differences are only in clock speeds. Both of these GPUs belong to the latest generation of professional mobile NVIDIA graphics cards, which indicates support for DirectX 10. In addition, they provide very low heat dissipation.

But the hard drive could well be installed at 160 GB. Such today in mobile computer x cheaper than $1000 is no longer a rarity. Of course, if you store on a laptop only text documents, then 20 GB will be enough for you, not to mention 120. However, sometimes you have to work with much more “gluttonous” programs, so the stock of free space will not be superfluous. It is rarely redundant at all. Yes, and over time it will still be missed.

Of the other interesting features, WWAN support can be noted, which is still found mainly in business laptops. ThinkPad T61 was deprived of it. However, it is not always in demand: if we take into account only work tasks of an office nature, then, as a rule, the ability to access the Internet through cellular network can only be useful in emergency cases.

The presence of a smart card reader and a COM connector will be required system integrators, system administrators or any other specialists related to various programmable equipment (for example, cash registers). In addition, they sometimes have to deal with PCMCIA cards, which are still more common than the new ExpressCard standards. Although in this case, Dell, in our opinion, should do the same as Lenovo - to equip the laptop with support for both standards.

The D630 clearly has a professional orientation, and the manufacturer tried to cover the maximum number of potential users. I must say, Lenovo T61 has a little less functionality. Although the differences between these laptops are not critical at all.

Design

While Lenovo continues the tradition of IBM with its ThinkPad lineup, having not changed the design drastically for the second decade, Dell is not shy about giving the appearance of its professional laptops some novelty. When looking at the T61, the following thought arises: "a working tool." But if you look at the D630 (while knowing its capabilities), something like the following will come to mind: “a stylish working tool”. The laptop is characterized by smoother lines, which give its appearance additional softness.

The main part of the body is made of dark gray carbon fiber with a brown tint. The exact same color has a touchpad and edging around the keyboard. The rest of the interior exterior is covered in smooth and very pleasant to the touch black plastic.

The laptop is equipped with eight LED indicators, three of which are placed on the left above the keyboard (Num/Caps/Scroll Lock), and five on the right pin. They signal various modes mobile computer operation (laptop is on, hard drive is working, battery is charging, Wi-Fi and/or Bluetooth controllers are on). The light signal is dim green, which can be written as a plus. It does not interfere with work and at the same time is perfectly noticeable.

Ergonomics

Standard input devices are enhanced with a TrackPoint joystick located in the center of the keyboard. Recall that this element is a branded "feature" of all IBM and Lenovo ThinkPad laptops. At Dell, this seems to be another implicit hint at the professional orientation of the mobile PC. "Pimpochka", unlike its counterpart in the T61, has a light blue color, not bright red. It stands out less, but it looks quite interesting. For it, under the space bar, there are left and right buttons. In addition to them, the T61 has a special button that turns on the scrolling function. So the TrackPoint ergonomics of the Lenovo laptop are somewhat better thought out.

The touchpad, on the other hand, is better on the D630. It has a slightly larger area, although, in our opinion, it could be more. Still, you have to work in a fairly large resolution, so the extra space is more relevant here.

The keyboard layout is exactly the same as the T61 (standard black only). Recall that we rated it as very thoughtful and convenient for laptops with a diagonal of less than 17″. The block of keys , and others is located in the same way as on the desktop keyboard, which makes its use very convenient. The size of the buttons has not changed.

In addition to the power button, the D630 is equipped with three additional keys. They are designed to adjust the volume level and mute the sound (Mute function). Again, in this regard, the laptop in question is similar to the ThinkPad T61. The sound itself is output through a single mono speaker located to the left of the keyboard. What can you do - corporate class ...

The variety of communication connectors in the D630 is not as great as it could be. However, this is still a professional laptop, not a business model.

On the left are Kensington Lock, two audio jacks, a work switch WiFi networks, FireWire and slots for smart cards and PC Card. Under the latter is a special cover behind which the hard drive "hides". A similar HDD installation system is used in most Dell laptops.

The right panel is used for the optical drive, as well as two USB connectors 2.0. Two more USB 2.0 are located at the back, which is very convenient: it would be appropriate to connect devices like a mouse or printer there. Next to them are D-SUB connectors, COM port, RJ-11, RJ-45 and a power connector.

In terms of the placement of ports and connectors, Dell makes a very favorable impression. The most frequently used elements are placed on the side faces, and those to which devices are connected on a permanent basis are installed at the back.

The battery is on the right front. If you remove it, the laptop will lose its balance, and it will be inconvenient to work, unless you connect an external keyboard and mouse. There are no more connectors on the front panel.

Separately, I would like to note the screen. He is simply excellent. First, the resolution: 1440×900 is usually found on 17-inch laptops, but here we are dealing with a 14.1-inch model. The characters are not very small, but there is a lot of space on the screen. Very pleased with the viewing angles. The picture almost does not fade when viewed from the side, which cannot be said about many other laptops with lower quality matrices (which, unfortunately, are the majority). At the same time, there is no mirror coating, which makes the colors more saturated. However, we say in good conscience that less saturated colors are better than our reflection (and the rest of the environment) on the screen.

In terms of upgrade options, you can replace one memory module, hard drive, and optical drive yourself. To replace the second memory bar, you will have to open most of the laptop, which we do not recommend doing on your own unless you have the appropriate qualifications. The drive, as mentioned above, can be replaced with a plug (to reduce weight), a battery or another drive. In addition, a port expander can be connected to the D630 through a special connector, which will increase the functionality of the computer at the workplace.

Testing

If you have read our two previous articles about laptops, then it will not be difficult for you to guess that we will compare the D630 with the models described in them: Lenovo ThinkPad T61 and FSC AMILO Xi2528. All three computers have a similar configuration, although the last one belongs to a different class.

PCMark 2005 is on par except for the graphics test. According to its results, the model under consideration turned out to be somewhat behind the other two, which was generally predictable.

Laptop Dell Latitude D630 is a stylish "working tool".

Design . Looking at the Dell Latitude D630, we see the familiar style of the D Latitude line, which meets all the strict criteria of business notebooks. The entire body of the laptop is matte and does not have a single glossy element. The design is dominated by two colors: gray and black. Traditionally, the laptop cover is made in gray, and the working area is in black (with the exception of the Touchpad and the frame that frame the keyboard - they are also made in gray). As usual, Dell placed its logo in the center of the lid. Lid closed Dell laptop The Latitude D630 holds the lock tightly, and opening it is no problem, the latch moves very smoothly.

Display. Opening the Dell D630 we see a 14-inch display, under which there is another Dell logo in the center. The display surface is matte, which, unlike the glossy one, is deprived of the “mirror” effect and does not glare from natural light (which will be a big plus for users who need to work with a laptop all the office and at home). We rated the viewing angles as above average, even with a sufficiently strong deviation, the colors are not inverted. The brightness and contrast of the matrix also remained without complaints, the colors are natural and do not irritate the eyes.

Manipulators. Like most business-class laptops, the Dell D630 is equipped with two input devices at once: a touch pad and a joystick (Track point). The touchpad is located in the usual place under the keyboard. Made in gray color, slightly recessed into the laptop case, its buttons are pressed gently and smoothly. The track point is painted light blue, and is usually located between keys G,H,B. With two manipulators, everyone can choose for themselves the most comfortable way to control.

Ports and slots. Notebook Dell Latitude D630 is equipped with a fairly extensive set of ports. Right the panel is used for an optical drive (which can be removed to reduce the weight of the device or insert an additional battery for extended battery life), as well as two USB 2.0 connectors. (two more USB 2.0 are on the back, which is very convenient). Next to them are D-SUB connectors, COM port, RJ-11, RJ-45 and a power connector. Left Kensington Lock, two audio jacks, a Wi-Fi network switch, FireWire, and slots for smart cards and a PC Card are located. Under the latter there is a special cover behind which the hard drive “hides” (a similar HDD installation system is used in most Dell laptops). It should be noted that the layout of the ports on the Dell Latitude D630 is very competent, the most frequently used ports are placed on the side faces, and the rest are moved to the back of the laptop.

Performance. The Dell Latitude D630 has a dual-core processor T7500, clocked at 2.2 GHz. The laptop is equipped with two DDR2 RAM memory slots. In our configuration, the total memory is 2GB (this amount should be enough for the vast majority of tasks). The Dell D630 also uses a discrete NVidia Quadro 135M graphics card, the performance of which is enough for professional design programs. But it’s still difficult to call this device a gaming one, on the other hand it depends on for which game tasks consider him. For data storage, Dell installed a 120 GB hard drive (serial ATA2).

Bottom line: Dell Latitude D630 is great work station! Strict appearance, excellent matte screen, an extensive set of ports and decent performance, what a business person needs!

Overview of the laptop Dell Latitude D630 and Lenovo ThinkPad T61.

Classic corporate class.

For you, the computer has long been a working tool and the main source of income? Then you have probably already thought about buying a laptop more than once to make your work more mobile. But choosing the right option that can provide good ergonomics is quite high performance, excellent quality manufacturing is not always easy. Then you have to pay attention to the corporate class of mobile PCs. They do not always shine with design, but their internal component is unlikely to leave professionals indifferent in their field. In any case, this is true for the Dell Latitude D630 and Lenovo ThinkPad T61 discussed in this article.

laptops in Lately have been very widespread. Many of us have thought about buying them. Even if you are employed in areas where mobile computers cannot yet be used due to their limited capabilities, it will still fit as a temporary alternative to a full-fledged PC, for example, during a business trip.

Let's imagine another case. You are a person who professionally (and not only) deals with computers every day. At the same time, you have been dealing with them for many years, during which they could completely bother you. At the same time, the accumulated experience has taught you not to save on quality, sometimes sacrificing performance, which is especially important when you have a limited budget.

We believe that people from this category have already thought about selling their desktop computer and buying a mobile. Moreover, the latter should become their main working tool both at home and in the office. It is possible that an external monitor, keyboard and mouse will be connected to it, thereby making the laptop a regular PC with the ability to work offline. The latter property can be useful when you are away on business or on vacation. At the same time, games are given, although not paramount attention, but still not the last. A laptop with integrated graphics is fine, but if there's a discrete video option, why not?

The only thing left is to find a mobile computer that is great for work, and sometimes for games. It must support all modern means of communication, have good screen, quality manufacturing, large volume RAM, modern productive processor, as capacious as possible HDD, as well as the ability to connect to a port replicator. The latter is especially useful if you will be carrying your laptop home and to work. If you have a replicator, you do not have to connect a monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer, scanner and other peripherals to it every time.

What fits this description? That's right, mobile computers from the corporate class. The most famous manufacturers of such devices are American companies like HP, Dell, and not so long ago, the Chinese Lenovo wormed its way among them after acquiring mobile business IBM.

A year ago, we were dealing with some corporate laptops. In particular, these are the Lenovo ThinkPad T60, as well as the HP Compaq nx7400 and nx9420. Since that time, the next generation of mobile Intel platforms, which provided manufacturers with another opportunity to update their laptop model lines. Today we got two mobile computers from the "new ones". Dell Latitude D630 and Lenovo ThinkPad T61 are typical work tools with fine workmanship based on the latest generation Core processors 2 Duo and NVIDIA Quadro-class discrete graphics. Let's see if they can become a worthy choice for a demanding and experienced user.

Design

Business-class laptops tend to have a strict, discreet appearance. However, this severity of theirs produces the opposite effect - it distinguishes such computers. Still, it's one thing - when the laptop is just "clumsy", and another - when its design is elegant and tasteful. This is just our case.

Dell Latitude D630

From the side of the Dell D630, when closed, it looks like a thin folder with documents. Its body is made of matte, slightly rough carbon fiber with a slight brown tint.

On reverse side The screen cover is located the manufacturer's traditional glossy logo.

The internal exterior of the D630 is somewhat similar to that of the Lenovo T61, but we are getting ahead of ourselves. The screen is somewhat recessed into the body, which is also characteristic of the classic design of the ThinkPad line from IBM, and now Lenovo.

The bright blue TrackPoint also stands out. However, this device The input of the Lenovo T61 stands out even more because it is red. But we are getting ahead of ourselves again. In order not to do this again, let's move on to reviewing the design of this laptop.

Lenovo ThinkPad T61

Last year we already dealt with one of the classic ThinkPads - it was the T60 model. The T61 differs from its predecessor primarily in its new screen aspect ratio. IBM, and Lenovo after it, almost does not change the overall design concept for a very long time. They also adhered to the classic 4:3 ratio. But the T61 is already a typical widescreen laptop.

We dealt with the 14.1-inch version, but there are also 15.4-inch modifications. However, we believe that the smaller version of the laptop is somewhat preferable. It takes up less space and also weighs less. At the same time, its ergonomics are not much different from the more massive "brother".

Inside, the T61 hasn't changed much. The bright red TrackPoint remained in place, the buttons for it, which are located above the touchpad. Pale blue hasn't gone anywhere. The screen is still a little "drowned" in the case.

Otherwise, the overall design concept remained untouched: an ash-black matte plastic case, IBM logos on the back of the screen cover and under the keyboard from the bottom right. With the last Lenovo, apparently, is not going to leave yet. Yet the brand of the blue giant for many is a kind of guarantor of quality.

The Dell Latitude D630 and Lenovo ThinkPad T61 laptops that came to us are similar in their configuration as two twin brothers. They have the same processor, the same amount of RAM, the same capacity hard drive, NVIDIA Quadro-class graphics cards, both laptops support one gigabit LAN communication, both have Bluetooth connectivity, and both have the same comfortable keyboard layout, in the center of which is integrated TrackPoint. Yes, the prices are the same. The Dell D630 can optionally come with a WWAN module, which will be an added bonus for some.

In general, the configuration will satisfy many people who will primarily work on these laptops. Powerful modern processor and a large amount of RAM is an excellent guarantee that computers will not “slow down” at the right time. But the hard drive could be installed more. Still, the cost of laptops is high, so a 160 GB HDD would be quite appropriate. Of course, if you do not take up free space with films and music, then this is not so critical, but the tasks are different.

Of the other controversial points, we can note the low battery capacity of the Lenovo T61. 1800 mAh is very little, which will clearly be noticeable from the test results in the corresponding section of the article. However, this manufacturer offers a variant with six cells. We just got a version with a low-capacity battery.

But it will be a nice addition. increased security T61, especially the hard drive. The company equips this series of laptops with a special technology that parks the hard drive heads during hard acceleration. Sometimes information on laptops of this class is more expensive than themselves, so such a "feature" can be very out of place.

Equipment

Dell Latitude D630 came to us without a complete set, so we, unfortunately, cannot cover this issue for it. But Lenovo ThinkPad T61 came in a complete set. However, he did not particularly surprise us:

  • Power supply Telephone cable Documentation kit Replacement tips for the TrackPoint

There is no recovery disk. Everything you need is on your hard drive.

Ergonomics Input devices

The requirements for input devices in corporate laptops are very high. This is especially true for the keyboard. An external keyboard is not always connected to such computers, so the layout should be as optimal as possible. It should be noted that the models under consideration have exactly this. I especially liked the layout of the keys , , , and in the form of a single block on the top left of both the D630 and the T61. The rest of the keys are standard sizes which makes them very convenient to use.

Dell Latitude D630

Lenovo ThinkPad T61

There are layout differences. So, the T61 has a key instead of the left one, which is not always convenient. However, you can get used to it pretty quickly. The Dell D630 does not have such a "flaw".

As for the touch panels, both laptops cannot boast of anything in this matter. The D630 has the most common medium-sized touchpad. In general, we believe that it makes sense to make it larger, since the screen resolution is not the usual 14-inch 1280x800 pixels, but 1440x900. The same goes for touch panel T61. She is even smaller. Apparently, the manufacturers expected that the owners of such mobile PCs would prefer a classic mouse to their finger.

Dell Latitude D630

Lenovo ThinkPad T61

With the “pimpochka” TrackPoint, everything seems to be clear and understandable. It is usually used on miniature subnotebooks, but for lovers of such input devices, such “charms of life” are sometimes built into the corporate class. This is especially true for IBM/Lenovo. But Dell also decided to keep up with this issue. This device is convenient to use on both laptops.

But you can't say the same about the buttons. In our opinion, the T61 offers a more convenient option. The buttons for the track point are softer to press, and the thumb finds them faster. In addition, between the right and left buttons is the third, which includes the scrolling function. The D630 has two typical buttons right below the spacebar. Nothing outstanding, but nothing bad either.

Lenovo ThinkPad T61

The main part of the D630 communication connectors is placed on the back. There are RJ-45, RJ-11, two USB, D-SUB, COM (!) and a power connector. The T61 has nothing on the back except for the battery, power connector and Kensington Lock.

I must say that in terms of connectors Dell D630 impressed more. First, he has 4 USB port, not three, like the T61. Secondly, for people whose profession is related to programming cash registers and similar devices, the COM connector may well come in handy. The last time we came across this samsung laptop R65, but he did not pull on the corporate class at all. Someone may find it useful and a smart card reader. On the other hand, the T61 has support for PC Card and ExpressCard, which in certain cases can also be a very popular feature.

Cooling system

Both laptops do a good job of dissipating heat. Although, looking at the bottom of both, you can’t immediately say this. The vents are small, and there are quite a few of them. Besides, it will be quite easy to block them all at once. So it’s better not to put D630 or T61 on a soft bed.

Dell Latitude D630

Lenovo ThinkPad T61

Under load, both mobile PCs experienced some heating of the bottom, although it was not very significant.

It is not necessary to expect anything special from the sound subsystem of a laptop of the "working tool" class. Both D630 and T61 sound. And that's it. And the second one sounds better. The point is in the dynamics, in particular - in their number. Dell's designers were only able to find room for one speaker, so you'll have to enjoy mono sound. Absolutely irrational use of the HD Audio codec, capable of outputting sound to eight channels. However, the T61 has two channels, so theoretically it can “buzz” better.

Screen

But the screens of the D630 and T61 can only be praised. Firstly, they are deprived of such a fashionable now mirror coating. Secondly, their working resolution is 1440x900 instead of the standard 1280x800 (although there are modifications of both laptops with this resolution). This is not very small, even for a matrix with a diagonal of 14.1 ", but at the same time there is more space on the desktop. And thirdly, the image quality is simply excellent. The viewing angles were especially pleased, and the color reproduction did not disappoint.

Internal device Processor

As already mentioned, both laptops have a Core 2 Duo T7300 processor with a frequency of 2.0 GHz.

As for RAM, the D630 and T61 are equipped with two modules of 1 GB each. Sufficient volume for full-fledged work in Windows Vista.

Dell Latitude D630

Lenovo ThinkPad T61

The memory sticks in the D630 and T61 operate at the maximum possible frequency of 667 MHz in dual-channel mode.

Video

Both laptops are equipped with NVIDIA Quadro professional mobile graphics cards. The D630 has the NVS 135M modification, and the T61 has the NVS 140M. The differences between them are only in the clock speeds. It is easy to guess that they are higher in the latest video card. Their characteristics are as follows.

64 bit (1x64)

700 (1400 MHz)

As you can see, the differences between the video cards are only in the higher frequencies of the Quadro NVS 140M chip. The GPUs themselves are slightly modified versions of the GeForce 8400M GS and 8400M GT for 135M and 140M, respectively.

Dell Latitude D630

Lenovo ThinkPad T61

The video card of the T61 operates at nominal clock speeds, while in the case of the D630 the latter are somewhat raised at GPU. Raised by 30 MHz, which practically equalizes both laptops. However, due to the video memory, the T61 should win in three-dimensional tests.

Design and modernization features

But with modernization, a very curious situation turns out. With Lenovo T61, we found a way to replace the hard drive, but we didn’t manage to get to the RAM. With the D630, the attempt turned out to be more successful, only now you can change only one memory module on your own. Well, the HDD, of course, can also be removed.

Lenovo ThinkPad T61

Instead of an optical drive, you can install either a plug to reduce the overall weight, or a second battery. A very useful feature in certain situations.

It is possible that this had an effect.

Battery Life

As already mentioned, Lenovo T61 is equipped with a battery of a rather small capacity - only 26 W * h (1800 mAh, 14.4 V). Although there are versions with six cells instead of four.

With power supplies, the situation is also quite interesting. While the T61 comes with a standard 90W power supply, the D630 comes with a 65W power supply. It worked stably, even under heavy load, although for a laptop with a discrete graphics card, the 90W option is still more preferable.

The T61 battery provides its "owner" with no more than two and a half hours of battery life in reading mode and less than one and a half hours of watching a DVD. Not enough for a work laptop. So you will probably have to upgrade the battery capacity if you get the 4 cell version. Dell D630, on the contrary, showed a very decent result - four hours of reading and almost two and a half hours of DVD playback.

Conclusion

So, can a corporate laptop be a great replacement for a desktop PC for a professional computer worker? Definitely can. The main thing is to choose the right model and choose the right configuration. The Dell Latitude D630 and Lenovo ThinkPad T61 we reviewed have very suitable specifications, although both could have had more hard drive space, as well as the battery capacity of the T61. However, all this can be replaced, and on sale you can easily find versions of these laptops with the necessary components. There are modifications with integrated graphics, which are cheaper, as well as faster CPU and high-capacity HDD, which are more expensive. The choice, as they say, is yours.

Otherwise, both laptops will not disappoint you. Classic corporate design, high quality workmanship, excellent screen, TrackPoint for exotic lovers, comfortable keyboard layout - everything is there for complete happiness. The only thing left to do is to find in yourself the desire to achieve it, and then find a way to achieve it, which in this case is expressed in the payment of a certain amount of money.

Laptops have become very popular in recent years.

We believe that people in this category have already thought about selling their desktop computer and buying a mobile one.

It must support all modern means of communication, have a good screen, high-quality manufacturing, a large amount of RAM, a modern productive processor, the most capacious hard drive possible, and the ability to connect to a port replicator. The latter is especially useful if you will be carrying your laptop home and to work. If you have a replicator, you do not have to connect a monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer, scanner and other peripherals to it every time.

What fits this description? That's right, mobile computers from the corporate class. The most famous manufacturers of such devices are American companies like HP, Dell, and not so long ago, the Chinese Lenovo was among them after acquiring IBM's mobile business.

A year ago, we were dealing with some corporate laptops. In particular, these are Lenovo ThinkPad T60, as well as HP Compaq nx7400 and nx9420. Since then, the next generation of the Intel mobile platform has changed, which provided manufacturers with another opportunity to update their laptop model lines. Today we got two mobile computers from the "new ones". The Dell Latitude D630 and Lenovo ThinkPad T61 are typical, well-made work tools based on the latest generation of Core 2 Duo processors and equipped with NVIDIA Quadro-class discrete graphics.

From the side of the Dell D630, when closed, it looks like a thin folder with documents. Its body is made of matte, slightly rough carbon fiber with a slight brown tint.
