If Alcatel cannot be called the leader of the mobile market, then there is no arguing about the recognition of this brand. The company has long been involved in telecommunications and computer equipment, including mobile devices.

We have been in our laboratory more than once with Alcatel products, so we will not delve into the history of the brand. But we definitely need to talk about fresh new products, since they are often very interesting.

In 2015, at an exhibition in Barcelona, Alcatel presented two new smartphones with the same name, but different characteristics. New Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 hides two modifications with different screen diagonals and hardware. The devices also differ in price. We are testing a more affordable, simple and compact version with a 4.7-inch screen diagonal.

The Idol series smartphones combine functionality, interesting design and many useful solutions that are unique to the company. So let's not delay and start learning Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3.

The 4.7-inch smartphone will be available in two versions: with 8 GB of internal memory for data storage in the version with one SIM card slot and 16 GB of internal memory in the version with two SIM card slots. OneTouch Idol 3 is officially released on the Russian market and is accompanied by local support. There are dark gray, silver and golden body colors. We are testing the dark gray version.

OneTouch Idol 3 price at this moment is at the mark of 14 thousand rubles. The device is currently presented only in a few stores, but soon the new product should become widespread.

The supposedly sound improvement system from JBL (switching the mode in the phone settings) does not improve the sound at all.

    the screen is fragile

    1) Fragile 2) Quite a little memory 3) The case, although beautiful, will be scratched and stained with grease only on the way. But still, it is not sticky because there is a roughness on the body. 4) Sound is an advantage and a disadvantage at the same time. If you turn off JBL effects, then for some reason the phone starts to play very poorly. Even worse than the ipod nano. This phone crashed on a tile, not only the sensor (which costs 300 rubles is usually replaced using molybdenum fishing line and soldering gun), but the screen is entirely LCD, and official components cost money. In general, I bought a Chinese screen for about 1.5 thousand 4.7 and it did not fit. There was a thickening at the bottom of the screen where it is placed on the body, which is not there on top, it turned out that this is its design feature and it is thicker at the bottom, although I didn’t have it on the case

The only drawback I can highlight is that there is not enough memory, only 8 gigs, I had to buy a 32 gig SD, but even after that, for some reason I was able to transfer only a very small number of applications from the phone to this card, and still there was memory clogged. Perhaps sometimes there was not enough battery, only 2000 Ma, this rarely bothered me, I’m not a fan of charge-consuming games like Real racing 3, but even when I played them, nothing jammed, that is, it played absolutely normally.

There is little memory, both RAM and built-in, critically low, despite the fact that it has about 5 applications installed in addition to custom ones. It heats up, sometimes so much that you think it’s going to explode, a reboot helps. Less than a year later, the rubber band on the top speaker fell off, I carry the phone in its original case. But the trash started literally six months ago, the Alcatel company decided to pursue a rather strange policy regarding standard applications. They added a ton of advertising to the weather, when an adsense block hangs at the bottom or top of the screen, there are no problems, it’s not visible, but when you click on a widget on the start screen, and a block of video advertising pops up for a few seconds... a standard application, built-in, which does not delete, for which I paid money. We built advertising into the gallery application, this is another standard built-in

I hate the case and covers and love to show off the true beauty of the phone, so what now, back cover There are abrasions and minor scratches. The camera lens is also all scuffed, but it doesn’t seem to have affected the quality of the photo. The camera also likes to take in the sun. For example, you want to take a photo of a car on the street, if you focus on the sun, the car will be dark, if you focus on the car, it will be bright. But there are exceptions. Sound, I noticed this crap: if you listen to a song first in the system player at maximum volume, and then the same song, for example on Vkontakte, then the speakers clearly lose quality ( Low Frequencies disappear, the high ones dominate), and we can come to the conclusion that the system player lowers the maximum volume by half only in itself, as for me it would be better if they were lowered not only in the player, but also

Poor reception, and switching between network modes freezes. Lags operating system. Application freezing. Sometimes the hearing speaker begins to distort the sound of the interlocutor. The video recording quality is disgusting, very dark, mono sound. Sometimes it starts to heat up in the area of the camera, and stupidly discharges, it only saves complete shutdown. The case is flimsy; if you put on a very hard or thick rubber case, the phone starts to hang. IN standard applications Lots of ads and slow updates.

Easily scratched VERY little memory Poor glass HD screen Mediocre camera

No update yet. Its main drawback is its 8 GB of memory. They are not enough for anything at all. Several applications clog them immediately. Moreover, the camera and gallery cannot store photos on an external memory card! You have to immediately upload them to Google Photos and delete them from memory, but at the same time Google Photos itself also consumes almost a gigabyte. In general, the applications are not optimized.

Overall the majority modern smartphones similar to each other. And manufacturers are trying to introduce something new into their new products, completely different from everything that came before. Alcatel has created two smartphones - with a large screen Alcatel idol 3 5.5 so-called "shovel" and smaller version Alcatel idol 3 4.7 mini, having a reversible interface. What is a reverse interface and what else is in these gadgets follows.

Design and interface

As mentioned above, both smartphones are reversible - speakers and microphones are located on both sides - top and bottom, and the software ensures the correct orientation of applications in any position of the smartphone. Thanks to this, in order to answer a call, for example, you can even hold the phone upside down. However, when you rotate the phone 180 degrees, the camera will be covered by your hand, and the control buttons will be inconvenient to press.
From useful functions You can note the ability to enable the lock/unlock function by double tapping on the screen, which will come in handy when the smartphone is upside down. The design of both Alcatel idol 3 is quite nice, the smartphones are thin and light.

Screen and sound

The first smartphone - Alcatel idol 3 5.5 has a wide screen of 5 and a half inches, Alcatel idol 4.7 has a smaller screen - 4.7 inches. The screen resolution of version 5.5 is slightly better. Both smartphones have wide-viewing-angle and high-resolution screens. The brightness of both is enough to maintain image readability in sunny weather.
The sound is handled by two speakers and Clari-Fi software, which provides loud and rich sound.

Camera

The main cameras of each smartphone have 13 megapixels, which allows you to take high-resolution pictures. To create high-quality photographs, there are a number of functions, such as electronic stabilization when shooting in motion, fast auto focusing with automatic face detection. Also, thanks to software processing, it is possible to take high-quality photos in poor lighting.
The front cameras differ - 8 mega pixels for the Alcatel idol 3 5.5 and 5 mega pixels for the Alcatel idol 4.7, both options have wide viewing angles, both options allow you to take high-quality selfies.

Performance

Alcatel idol 3 5.5 has an 8-core processor and 2 gigabytes of RAM. These characteristics allow you to cope even with demanding applications. Built-in memory 16 gigabytes. mini version- Alcatel idol 3 4.7 already has 4 nuclear processor and slightly smaller volume random access memory 1.5 gigabytes, which is also very good. The built-in memory is half as much - 8 gigabytes.
In terms of battery – about 2000 mA for the smaller smartphone and 2900 mA for version 5.5.
The smartphone in both versions supports fourth generation 4g (LTE) networks and has a GPS module for satellite navigation.

  1. The purpose of Seller Reviews publications is somewhat different from other similar reviews. The truth is that little...

How long have you had this device?

I purchased this smartphone about a month ago.

Do you use it until now? If not, why did you break up with him?

I'm currently using it.

How did you get this device? What criteria were used to select it?

First I saw a review of Alcatel Idol 3, got interested and read it various reviews and reviews, I decided to buy it. Because I have a tablet, but rarely use it, I decided that a 5.5-inch smartphone screen would to some extent allow me to combine two devices (phone and tablet) in one. Since lately the smartphone has been constantly used for accessing the Internet and reading email, I considered the screen size of 5.5" optimal for myself, although with such dimensions it is almost impossible to use the device in all situations with one hand. Also on the decision to purchase new smartphone influenced by the desire to acquire a “smart watch”, which required Android with a version no lower than 4.3, and the previous device’s operating system was “stuck” at 4.2.

Where and how much was it purchased?

I bought it in an online store for 17,400 rubles. - this price was 1600 rubles. lower than in stores.

What do you like? Strengths, advantages.

I like the design, lightness, beautiful screen and excellent sound reproduction, either through the built-in stereo speakers or through a headset. Excellent value for money and quality! I deliberately do not count a relatively recent operating system, a large screen, the presence of LTE, etc. as advantages. - many modern smartphones of a similar level have this and, in my opinion, this should not be considered an advantage - this is the norm! But great sound, more or less non-trivial design and lightness - this is not found in all devices!

What's not to like? Weak sides, flaws.

I will try to cover this point in more detail. When choosing a phone, I was guided by the experience of using various smartphones since their appearance - from premium ones to relatively affordable ones. My last smartphone was from Alcatel (One Touch Idol X 6040). Having bought different flagships several times at the maximum price, I was faced with the fact that after a year or two the price for them dropped incredibly, they became obsolete and I was no longer interested in throwing money away for a brand and maximum characteristics. I don’t play 3D games on a smartphone, the super-duper characteristics of the processor don’t bother me too much... For me, it’s much more important how the smartphone looks, how it takes photos and videos, how it plays sound, whether it has a fresh operating system, whether it slows down when using... The brand has not bothered me at all for some time now!

Therefore, at one time Alcatel Idol X (6040) was chosen. I really liked this phone and still like it, so when I saw new flagship Alcatel - Idol 3 (5.5), I was positive about it in advance. However, after the purchase, several significant disadvantages emerged that were absent on Alcatel Idol X and which still irritate me, namely:

1. The icons in the status bar are not colored.
2. There is no SMS/MMS widget.
3. It is not possible to install a sidebar in the browser from Google Labs - and this is with a screen size of 5.5"!
4. Metadata is not transmitted to the car audio system (track counter data, song name, etc. are not displayed).
5. The video is not sharp! Or rather, it is sharp, but compared to the previous smartphone, it is some kind of “soap”! This does not apply to the photo!
6. The camera's eye is located in the very corner, and when using the camera, your finger involuntarily gets into the lens.
7. The ability to use the phone “upside down” is not very popular, but the presence of virtual buttons “forward, back, home” on the screen reduces its size in some situations and the advantage of a large screen is reduced.
8. There is no ability to turn off/on the screen using the volume buttons, and the poor built-in launcher does not imply the presence of any widgets for turning off the screen.
9. There are no covers or other bumpers on this model! I ordered it with difficulty and waited three weeks for the case through the online store.

Now I want to emphasize once again that all of the above shortcomings were not present in the phone that was almost three years old (except for point 9)!!! Some may consider some of my comments (such as the lack of colored icons) to be nitpicking, but they really decorated the desktop and made it easier to perceive information!

What do you miss about it?

Listed in the previous paragraph!

What features do you use often?

Calls, taking photos and videos, music, books, viewing photos and videos, Email, SMS, Internet, navigation, Viber... Rarely, rarely simple games... Accordingly, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G and LTE, GPS, a lot of third-party programs and applications.

What features do you use occasionally?

Well I do not know...

What functions do you not use at all?

I don’t use NFC, transfer images to the TV screen, I don’t use a compass.

Did the device have to be repaired?

No! Pah-pah!

What troubles happened with the device?

Didn't happen!

What glitches were noticed?

Sometimes (very rarely) small glitches occur with the widget of one weather forecast program, which I associate with the use of a third-party launcher or the program itself and which are easily resolved by either restarting the launcher, or reinstalling the widget, or restarting the system.

Try to compare this device with other models you have used.

There is no way to compare with everything I have used - there are too many devices. But with the same “flagship” Alcatel Idol X, which was announced in February 2013, I have already compared and focused on exactly what, in my humble opinion, simply should not be in the new model! The only thing in which the new flagship definitely outperforms the old one is sound!

What else can you say?

In general, the purchase left me with a twofold feeling: on the one hand, I like the phone (design, large screen, excellent sound), on the other hand, the shortcomings noted above are very annoying!

If it were not possible to compare with the previous flagship of the same company, I would give 8-10 points. Well, in fact - 6-7 points. However, for those for whom the shortcomings I have listed are not important, I highly recommend this smartphone! After all, its price/quality is very, very competitive!

With the current development of the mobile industry, it has become difficult for all manufacturers to surprise and stand out. Large companies are stalling in fruitless attempts to impose fake innovations on users, and those smaller brands, on the contrary, are catching up with the leaders at turbo speed, without disdaining experiments along the way (after all, they not only want to catch up with A-brands, but also beat out competitors of their level). The Alcatel OneTouch brand decided to make the feature of the Idol 3 family not the iron component or materials, but the ability to work upside down, tied to the design and software. We had at our disposal a small Idol 3 4.7 and a large Idol 5.5. If you are ready to learn their features and differences, then start reading and watching the video!

Video review and unboxing

Design and equipment

Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 4.7 came in a sealed box, which made it possible to evaluate the official Russian package. It includes the device itself, documentation, a pin for the SIM/microSD tray, a microUSB cable, charging (1 A) and JBL headphones. Most likely, the set of accessories for Idol 3 5.5 is no different.

From included in the box JBL headphones I expected a lot more. The flat cable and good design are attractive, but the extremely inexpressive sound without bass and details does not allow you to use the product for its intended purpose (if you respect your own hearing, of course). Even Xiaomi Piston 2 or 3 (review) for $15 perform better. So give the complete solution to the cat and let him play with it. Looking ahead, I’ll say that loud statements like “the sound of Idol 3 was perfected by JBL itself, so get ready for pleasant goosebumps from the incredible quality” are also partly rubbish, but more on that below.

In terms of design, Idol 3 4.7 and Idol 3 5.5 are like twin brothers. One, however, ate little as a child, and the second ate too many carrots. The large model was obviously based on the small one. Otherwise, I cannot explain why the keys on the ends of the Idol 3 5.5 are at the same distance from the top edge as those of the Idol 3 4.7 - it is very inconvenient to reach them. Even at 5.5" Apple iPhone 6 Plus (review), which only the lazy would not kick for the ill-conceived placement of buttons; the controls are located lower. The frames and margins are not large, but not small either - normal, in general. The younger Idol 3, which came new in the box, did not begin to creak during the study process. And the large Idol 3, which turned out to be a prototype from the pre-release batch, creaked with its lid and sides. I think the commercial Idol 3 5.5 should be built just as well as the Idol 3 4.7.

The arrangement of elements on the body is slightly different. On the front panel you can see light and proximity sensors, a front camera (5 MP for Idol 3 4.7 and 8 MP for Idol 3 5.5), an LED indicator and two stereo speakers. On the left is the power button and the SIM/microSD tray. On the right is the volume rocker. The bottom end received a microUSB port and a microphone, and the top end received an audio jack and a second microphone. At the back you can see a 13-megapixel camera with flash and logos. It is curious that the phones, being made in the same color, differ in the shade and texture of the non-removable covers. Idol 3 4.7 has a grayer lid, it is more matte and rough and, as a result, less easily soiled and slippery.

The manufacturer claims the same power for stereo speakers through the NXP 9890 amplifier (two 1.2 W speakers). In fact, Idol 3 4.7 is louder, and Idol 3 5.5 plays a little deeper, but there is also a negative point - the back cover, having a large area, vibrates unpleasantly from the sound of Idol 3 5.5. Both Idol 3 are louder than Sony Xperia Z3+ (moisture protection of the model is detrimental) and Apple iPhone 6 Plus. However, Alcatel's new products One Touch They're quieter and weaker than the Motorola Nexus 6. The official Idol 3 website says the speakers "deliver hi-fi surround sound thanks to JBL's advanced Clari-Fi technology." This technology supposedly restores the original sound quality of compressed music files. I would like to look into the eyes of the audio experts at JBL, who are able to distinguish MP3 (at least 128 kbps) from FLAC from microscopic smartphone speakers. I'm afraid the good sound is largely due to the number of speakers. As for the Hi-Fi quality from the built-in speakers, it's not even funny.

The displays of the models are different. The younger one got a 4.7" HD panel with 312 ppi, while the older one sports a 5.5" Full HD screen with a density of 401 ppi. The Idol 3 4.7 exhibits color inversion and highlighting when tilted, while the Idol 3 5.5 behaves excellently when tilted. The screen of Idol 3 4.7 is cold, and the screen of Idol 3 5.5 is warm. Since we are dealing with IPS, other copies may have different temperatures. Unfortunately, there is no way to adjust it in the settings. For their classes, the displays of the devices are very good.

The slogan says that "Idol 3 is ready for any turn." The point is that you can take your phone out of your pocket or bag upside down and the interface of any application will be oriented correctly (you don’t even have to twist the device in your hands when incoming call). TO software implementation There are no complaints, as well as about the implementation of the speakers, as well as the symmetrical shape of the models in general - they correspond to the idea. But there are a couple of key points where Idol 3 can be caught off guard when turning and that prevent it from being considered 100% reversible. Firstly, I wonder at what stage the engineers and designers disobeyed the programmers by placing the buttons on the side faces at a higher height. When turning, as you understand, changing the volume with your little finger, as well as pressing the lock key with your thumb muscles, is not very comfortable. I think the buttons should have been placed in the center. Secondly, if you pull the device upside down from your jeans to quickly take a photo of something cool, you will block the peephole with your hand (in vertical or horizontal orientation) and you will still have to take Idol 3 correctly. And even if you hold the phone upside down not for photos, but for other purposes, you will constantly smudge the camera - you will have to wipe it regularly. You won’t be able to get the gadget out in the traditional position without looking because of its symmetry. After all, it is tactilely unclear where the front is and where the back is. The audio jack on the top edge, by the way, also does not contribute to “proper storage in the pants” - but the interface adapts to the player, which is a plus in comparison with asymmetrical models, where the jack is also at the top. In my opinion, the concept itself is cool, but there are certain inconveniences behind it, so consider it competitive advantage I would not. Apparently, they are the reason why reverse smartphones have not yet gained popularity - they are not worth the candle.

Software

The software base is Android 5.0.2 Lollipop with a proprietary launcher. Since there is no difference in software, and it is more convenient to work with a large screen, Idol 3 5.5 was taken as the basis for the material. The company abandoned attempts at large-scale customization of the interface and only slightly modified the vanilla shell. It turned out nice.

In addition to traditional tables with folders, icons and widgets, there is a OneTouch Stream screen. It displays weather, news, popular programs and background pictures. Some branded applications, getting on the desktop, turn into widgets. You click, for example, on a radio or a branded audio player, and instead of a full-screen program, you see a menu with control keys opened to a third of the display. To go to full screen mode, you need to click on the icon in the upper right corner.

The notification shade with shortcut keys is standard. In the menu of active programs there is a broom with which you can close all applications at once. You can display five buttons on the lock screen for quick access to some functions (calculator, player, selfie camera, writing SMS, voice recorder and others). The buttons are a bit small, and if you have a lot of notifications on the lock screen, you may have difficulty activating the desired function quickly. Especially on Idol 3 4.7.

Now about the settings. The Gestures section has few options, but there is a much-needed double tap to turn the display on and off. In “Screen”, animation is selected when rotating 180 degrees (two out of four are laggy). If you get a book case for Idol 3 5.5, you can configure it in the appropriate section. If you use a memory card, you can install applications on it. There is support for OTA updates, I received something on both phones.

There are a lot of pre-installed applications: antivirus, audio services, demo versions of games, some proprietary software, clients social networks and other. There is no point in talking about everything (screenshots will suffice), although I will focus on the “Mix” program.

“Mix” is a proprietary audio player (in vertical orientation) with the ability to create mixes on virtual turntables (in horizontal orientation). I don’t understand much about DJing, but something tells me that it’s unlikely to be possible to create something sane on the phone. I'll be glad to be wrong. At your service are track playback speed sliders, volume balance, equalizer, sound samples, rhythmic drums. “Mix” can be used as a player, but its interface will require a little getting used to so as not to make random scratches on the record. The AKM AK4375 chip, familiar from the ZTE Nubia Z9 family, is used as a DAC in Idol 3 (in both models).

They say that JBL specialists were involved in fine-tuning the sound. But it is not clear what sound exactly. The fact is that in the settings in the “Melodies and Notifications” section there is a JBL item with effects from JBL, which simply disfigure the original performance. If you turn off this degrader, the sound from Idol 3 is at the level of the top LG G4, Samsung Galaxy The S6 is good enough to satisfy the vast majority of mobile listeners. In combination with the Denon D600 headphones, we can note quite sharp highs, good mids and balanced bass. And if you turn on the JBL gadgets, the highs go away, a boominess appears, the mids begin to hurt your ears, mixing the guitar parts into a sickening haze, and the bass becomes loose and appears where it is not needed. It feels like I put on my head not Japanese headphones for 25 thousand rubles, but a fake Beats from a subway crossing.

Camera

The main cameras of the Idol 3 models are the same: a 13 megapixel sensor, f/2.0 aperture, single flash, autofocus. The camera app offers several modes, including a manual mode with awkward options for white balance, focus, shutter speed and ISO. There are settings, but other than resolution and exposure there is not much to change. The pictures come out almost identical. Sometimes, depending on specific conditions, the case, the firmware, the white balance may fluctuate slightly - it is difficult to notice. However, in general, both Idol 3 4.7 and Idol 3 5.5 can be praised for detail and color reproduction. Phones take especially good pictures in good light. My classmates tensed up, yes.

Idol 3 4.7 and Idol 3 5.5:

Idol 3 4.7 and Idol 3 5.5

The front cameras are different. Idol 3 4.7 has a 5-megapixel module with f/2.5 aperture, and Idol 3 5.5 has an 8-megapixel module with f/2.3 aperture. It’s strange, but selfies taken on the younger model are better in clarity and often have the same color quality. Perhaps the programmers have not yet finished the software of the Idol 3 5.5 front camera and after some time it will show itself. But for now here it is:

Idol 3 4.7 and Idol 3 5.5

Idol 3 4.7 and Idol 3 5.5

After good photo opportunities, I mentally prepared myself for some pretty good videos, but, alas and ah. The maximum resolution for videos from the front and rear cameras is limited to 1080p. At the same time, Idol 3 4.7 records video at a speed of 23 fps from the main camera and 30 fps from the front camera, and Idol 3 5.5 produces 30 fps when recording from the main camera and 15 fps from the front camera. Detail from the main cameras could be better for Full HD, and the tracking autofocus is not too quick to focus when changing shots. Electronic stabilization is not very effective, but with it it is still better than without it. The sound is poorly recorded on both models, but Idol 3 4.7 is still worse. Color rendition with front camera Idol 3 5.5 seemed nicer, but the lagging picture shakes a lot when moving. In general, the Alcatel OneTouch turned out to be sad with the video, but the photos are good.

Benchmarks and Performance

There are several versions of telephones in nature. Modifications 6039Y (Idol 3 4.7) and 6045Y (Idol 3 5.5) are single-SIM and have a microSD slot, while 6039K (Idol 3 4.7) and 6045K (Idol 3 5.5) do not have microSD, but have support for two SIM cards. Volume internal memory also varies. The single-sim version Idol 3 4.7 has 8 GB, the dual-sim version has 16 GB. Single-SIM Idol 3 5.5 offers 16 GB, dual-SIM – 32 GB. However, these are all the volumes declared by the company. It turned out that Idol 3 4.7 with number 6039Y does not have an 8 GB chip, but a 16 GB one! The manufacturer programmatically cut the memory in half to space out the 6039Y and 6039K, as well as the 6039Y and 6045Y, but users have the opportunity to unlock the drive completely.
