In some cases, when working in Microsoft Word, as well as in other applications office suite, you may encounter an error “The program has stopped working...”, which appears directly when you try to open a text editor or a separate document. Most often it occurs in Office 2007 and 2010, on different versions Windows OS. There are several reasons for the problem, and in this article we will not only find out them, but also offer effective solutions.

In most cases, the error indicating that the program has stopped working occurs due to some add-ons activated in the settings section of the text editor and other applications of the package. Some of them are enabled by default, others are installed by the user independently.

There are other factors that are not the most obvious, but at the same time have a negative impact on the operation of the program. These include the following:

  • Outdated version of the office suite;
  • Damage to individual applications or Office as a whole;
  • Incompatible or outdated drivers.

It is possible and necessary to exclude the first and third reasons from this list now, so before you start correcting the error voiced in the topic of the article, make sure that the latest available version of Microsoft Office is installed on your computer. If it's not, please update this software using our instructions.

Incorrectly installed, outdated or missing drivers in the system would seem to have nothing to do with the office suite and its performance. However, in reality they entail many problems, one of which may well be an emergency termination of the program. Therefore, after updating Word, be sure to check the integrity, relevance and, most importantly, the presence of all drivers in the operating system. If necessary, update them and install missing ones, and our step by step instructions will help you do this.

If, after updating the software components, the error still appears, to fix it, proceed to follow the recommendations below, acting strictly in the order we indicated.

Method 1: Automatic error correction

On the Microsoft technical support website, you can download a proprietary utility designed specifically for troubleshooting problems in Office. We'll use it to fix the error in question, but before you proceed, close Word.

Method 2: Manually disabling add-ons

As we said in the introduction of this article, the main reason for stopping work Microsoft Word are add-ons, both standard and independently installed by the user. Simply disabling them is often not enough to fix the problem, so you will have to act more sophisticatedly by running the program in safe mode. This is done like this:

  1. Call system utility "Run" holding down the keys on the keyboard "WIN+R". Enter the command below into the line and click "OK".
  2. Word will be launched in safe mode, as evidenced by the inscription in its header.

    Note: If Word won't start in Safe Mode, the stoppage is not related to add-ins. In this case, go straight to "Method 3" of this article.

  3. Go to menu "File".
  4. Open section "Options".
  5. In the window that appears, select "Add-ons" and then in the dropdown menu "Control" select "Word Add-ins" and click on the button "Go".

    In the window that opens with a list of active add-ons, if any are there, follow the steps described in steps 7 and below of the current instructions.

  6. If on the menu "Control" no item "Word Add-ins" or it is not available, select an option from the drop-down list "COM add-ins" and click on the button "Go".
  7. Uncheck one of the add-ons in the list (it’s better to go in order) and click "OK".
  8. Close Word and launch it again, this time in normal mode. If the program works normally, it means that the cause of the error lay in the add-on you disabled. Unfortunately, you will have to stop using it.
  9. If the error appears again, use the method described above to launch the text editor in safe mode and disable another add-in, then restart Word again. Do this until the error disappears, and when this happens, you will know which specific add-in is causing it. Therefore, everything else can be turned back on.
  10. According to Microsoft Office support representatives, the following add-ons are most often the cause of the error we are considering:

  • PowerWord;
  • Dragon Naturally Speaking.

If you use any of them, it is safe to say that it is precisely this that provokes the problem, negatively affecting the performance of Word.

Problems starting an Office 2013 application

  • powerpnt/safe and press Enter to launch PowerPoint 2013;
  • mspub/safe and press Enter to launch Publisher 2013;

If an Office application doesn't start in safe mode, then the problem is not with the add-ons. Go to section More details to view other reasons why your Office application might not work.

If the Office application starts, disable the add-ons one by one.

  1. While the Office application is running in safe mode, click File > Options > Add-ons.
  2. Near the list Control click Go.

If more new version no or you do not use this add-in, you may not check the corresponding box again or remove it from your computer.

If the Office application doesn't start, repeat the steps above and uncheck the other add-ins one by one. If all add-ins are disabled and the Office application still won't start, follow the steps in Troubleshooting COM add-ins.

The “ten” has implemented a new application – the office suite Office 365. It is downloaded from the store Microsoft Store and usually problems with text editor does not arise. More often, users encounter problems with Word 2010 or 2016, which were designed for previous versions operating system.

In this article we will try to deal with all possible reasons, why Word does not start on “ten”.

License

Any office suite from Microsoft is paid. Trial free version available for 30 days. The license is purchased on the official website. The program is activated using the key. Installing unlicensed assemblies of the Office package, in particular the Word editor, may prevent the program from starting.

If the licensed version does not start, you should check its activation. It is quite possible that for some reason the office program was not activated using the key. For this we use command line, which we will run as administrator (you can read how to do this in different ways).

You need to write the command in the line CD and then in quotes the path to the folder in which the office package is installed. We have Word 2016 installed on our computer in the 32-bit version. Please note that the 64-bit version of the application will be located in the Program Files folder.

After that, enter the command cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus. The complete license verification operation is as follows.

Pay attention to the License Status item. When the office package is activated, this column will read “LICENSED”. In our case, we see the value “NOTIFICATIONS”, which can be translated as a warning. Below is the error code and description. We are receiving a message (warning) that Microsoft Office cannot be activated using KMS.

KMS– a well-known activator of the operating room Windows systems 10 in general and office programs in particular. We do not recommend using it to activate Microsoft products, but we advise you to buy a license.

Thus, if the activation status is “LICENSED,” then your Word is activated and can be launched. You can write to support about any problems with the license. Contact details are on the official Microsoft website.

Run Word as administrator

It happens that you need administrator rights to run Word. Let's try to run the program with administrator rights. Find the program shortcut in the Start menu and right-click on it. Select the “Advanced” item and select “Run as administrator” from the context menu.

If this method was effective, you need to change the launch type of the shortcut. Open the folder where the Word exe file is located. In the same way, find it in the “Start” menu, right-click, go to “Advanced” and select the third option “Go to file location”.

Explorer will open with the folder where the executable is located. Word file. Right-click on it and select “Properties” from the context menu.

In the “Shortcut” tab, click on “Advanced”. A window will appear where you can set the ability to run the shortcut as an administrator. Unfortunately, in our case the window is not active, it is impossible to apply parameters to this shortcut. Either it is due to the lack of a license, or for other reasons. If possible, we will find the cause of this problem and let you know.

Word Recovery

It is possible that some components of the office suite have been damaged, changed, or deleted. Open the “Programs and Features” section of the Control Panel: press the Win+R key combination and enter the command appwiz.cpl.

In the window that opens we find office program and click on the “Change” icon.

In the next window, select “Restore” and click “Continue”.

Word add-ins are a common reason why a program cannot start. Microsoft developers have identified several add-ons that interfere with the adequate launch of the application - Dragon Naturally Speaking, Abbyy FineReader, PowerWord.

Add-ons are disabled in Safe Launch Mode. Press the Win+R key combination and enter the command winword /safe. If the application does not start in safe mode, the problem is unlikely to lie in add-ons.

But if it starts, go to context menu"File".

Select the “Add-Ins” tab, install “Word Add-ins” at the bottom and click “Go”.

Remove markers from add-ons that appear in the list.

If the field is empty, go back to settings. Now select “COM Add-ins”.

In the window that appears, disable the add-ins one by one: disable one, exit safe mode, and launch Word again in normal mode. And so on with each add-in until you understand which one is causing the error.

In our case, there are no COM add-ons.

Editor users " Word"They ask a lot of questions related to its work, including people wondering why it doesn't work" Word» on the computer in different cases?

Open the Word file

Yes, such a problem does not happen very rarely, so in our review we will discuss why “ Word"and how to resolve this error.

Why “Word” does not work on the computer: reasons and their solutions?

So that we can decide this problem, we will need to find out the reasons why it may occur. Let's look at this question.

It is known that the document Word» does not open due to the following:

  • The file is damaged
  • For one reason or another (described below), the file is read using third-party software.
  • The system does not recognize the file

Now let's see what can be done in each of the described cases.

Word document won't open due to file corruption

You will see this error immediately when you try to open a document. An error notification window will open and you will be prompted to restore the file. You will need to agree to the restoration, but keep in mind that the file may be partially or incorrectly restored.

The Word document does not open because the file is linked to another program

If for some reason the file extension is specified incorrectly or it is linked to another program, then it can be opened in the corresponding program. For example, files ". txt" open in the utility " Notebook", and if the document " Word" has a similar extension instead of ". doc", or if it is programmed to open in " Notepad", then it will open only in it.

By the way, if the document " Word" will open in " Notepad", then all the information contained in it will be displayed incorrectly, and you will see the following picture:

Open the Word file

Another important circumstance should also be noted. If the file extension is specified incorrectly, for example, “.ljljlfjfljf”, then the system will not be able to open it at all, since such an extension does not exist (or has not yet been invented), and it is not associated with any program.

So, the above problems are solved as follows:

  • Select a file that has an extension other than " Word"(you must be initially sure that this file really belongs to the program " Word»).

Open the Word file

  • After selecting the file, click on it with the mouse again, after which you will be able to change the file extension (as well as its name), delete the incorrect extension after the dot.

Open the Word file

  • If you initially do not see any file extension other than its name, then your system is programmed accordingly. In this case, go to any folder and then go to “ ServiceFolders settingsView", scroll down the list presented, uncheck the box next to the item " Hide extensions..." and click on " OK».

Open the Word file

  • So, after we have removed the incorrect extension at the end of the file name, we need to set the necessary characters after the dot: “ docx».

Open the Word file

  • Now you can open the file " Word»

Open the Word file

  • In addition, you can open the file " Word"through the text editor itself - run it.

Open the Word file

  • Then, through the window that opens, find the file you want to open

Open the Word file

  • Open this file

Open the Word file

Word document won't open because the system doesn't recognize it

This problem usually happens on older versions of the operating system. You will need to go to " My computerServiceFile type" and associate files ". doc"with a text editor" Word».
