A fairly common problem among operating room users. Windows systems any versions - msi error when installing programs from a file with the .msi extension. Problems may be with the operation of the service itself or may arise during the installation of programs, when everything is configured, in principle, correctly. In the first case, you need to tinker with the installer service, and in the second, solve a problem with a specific file. Let's consider both options, but first the second one.

msi file errors

Very often errors appear due to insufficient system rights to files or folders. This is not to say that Windows Installer does not work; in this case, you just need to add the necessary rights and everything will work. Just yesterday I was faced with the fact that the downloaded distribution kit.msi did not want to be installed, the installation wizard starts successfully, the parameters are selected, but then the system thinks for a few seconds and gives an error:

"Error reading from file 'filename' verify that the file exists and that you can access it" (Error 1305). Translated: “Error reading from file...check if the file exists and if you have access to it.” Well, aren't you stupid? Naturally, the “Retry” button does not help, and canceling stops the entire installation. The message also does not carry any special meaning, because the file definitely exists and I have access to it, otherwise I simply wouldn’t be able to run it and receive this message, and for some reason it’s in English :)

And the mistake is that it is not I who should have access to the file, but the Windows installer, or rather the System itself. The solution is very simple:

Now the installer error will not appear! You can add access to the entire folder from which you usually install programs, for example, to the “Downloads” folder, like mine. Watch a video on solving problems with access rights:

In Windows XP, the Security tab will not appear if simple general access to files. To turn it off, you need to go to “Start -> Control Panel -> Folder Options -> View” and turn off the “Use simple file sharing” option. In stripped-down versions of Windows 7/10 and XP, there is no “Security” tab at all. To see it, you need to log in as an administrator.

More ways to solve the problem

The described method will help with different messages, with different numbers. For example, you may see msi file errors like this:

• Error 1723
• Internal Error 2203
• System error 2147287035
• Error: "This installation package cannot be opened"
• Error 1603: A fatal error occurred during installation

In all these cases, setting permissions on the file and/or on some system folders should help. Check if the "system" has access to the temporary files folder (you may receive the error "The system cannot open the specified device or file"). For this:

After pressing “Enter” the path will change to “normal” and you will be moved to the real temporary folder. The rights to it need to be checked. I also recommend clearing temporary folders of everything that has accumulated there, or even better, deleting them and creating new ones with the same names. If you can’t delete a folder, read, but it’s not necessary.

If the Windows Installer service still does not want to work, then check the rights to the folder "C:\Config.Msi", here the “system” must also have full access. In this case, you might have seen the error “Error 1310”. Just in case, make sure that the folder WHERE you are installing the software also has all rights.

Registry and service settings

The next way to resolve the error is to restore operating parameters in the Windows Installer registry.

To do this, download the archive and run two reg files from there, according to your Windows versions. Agree to import settings.

Important! It is advisable before the last action! If the method does not help or gets worse, you can recover to your previous state.

If this does not help, then re-register the components:

1. Press "Win + R" and enter " cmd". Then in the black window enter the following commands in sequence:
   MSIExec /unregister
   MSIExec /regserver

3. Close the black window

And, finally, one more piece of advice: if in the path to the distribution file there is at least one folder with a space at the beginning of the name, then remove the space. Follow the instructions below:

• Find your installation file and right-click on it;
• Select the properties window;
• Go to the security settings tab;
• In the groups or users text box, check to see if there is a user named "system". If it is not there, you need to add the user manually;

• To add a new user, click on the Edit button and then on the Add button;
• In the text field for the names of the selected object, write the word “system” (without quotes). If you are using the English version of the operating system, enter the word System;
• The entered word should instantly become underlined, as shown in the figure below;

• Check the box next to Full access and now click on the OK button;

The installer will now be able to access the executable file. The installation should complete without problems.

Please note that in some cases antivirus software may block access to the installation file.

To solve this problem, you need to go to operating system under account administrator, turn off the antivirus and enable compatibility with other OS versions in the antivirus properties settings, as shown in the figure below.

Windows Installer Error - Troubleshooting

When installing applications that use the Nullsoft Scriptable Install System installation package, you may receive an error - NSIS Error with the text “Error Launching Installer” or “Installer integrity check has failed”.
Also, the window may contain a link to the page nsis.sf.net/nsis_error. How to fix it?
If you downloaded the program from the Internet, then most likely the reason is that the program installer simply did not download properly. Start by downloading it again and running the installation. Usually this is what helps.

If it still pops up NSIS Error, then try downloading the program from another site again. Perhaps there is a broken copy uploaded there.

What else can you try?!

- copy the installer to another folder. Make sure that it does not contain Russian letters - only Latin ones!

— Check that the name of the program installer does not contain Russian letters, spaces or special characters. This can also cause NSIS error.

— Disable the installed antivirus, it may be blocking the installer. It is not at all necessary that the program contains a virus. It’s just that antivirus programs can block the actions of an application only on suspicion. This is fine.

— Update the databases antivirus program and check it on your computer. The NSIS Error may appear due to the fact that some virus has damaged the installation package by writing part of its code there. After checking, download the installation package again and run it.

— Check the logical drive of the computer on which the installer is located, system utility chkdsk.

If suddenly nothing helps and NSIS Error it still won’t let you install the application - then try downloading it from friends or acquaintances and check the installation on their computer. Does it work without problems? Copy it to a flash drive and bring it to you. By doing this, at least you will eliminate problems with yourself installation file, checking it for functionality.

An NSIS (Nullsoft Scriptable Install System) error is an error that appears when you’re trying to install something, but the setup file is in some way corrupt or incomplete or if it doesn’t match the settings on your system. The message NSIS error - Error launching installer means that the installer has failed the self-check because it has been modified from its original form. If the installation continues, the software will be broken and won’t function properly.

To prevent this, the installer prevents itself from continuing.

There are a few situations where you might encounter such an error:

1. The files for the software you have downloaded from the internet aren’t complete
2. The physical media (CD/DVD) you’re installing from is damaged
3. The downloaded files have been modified and are different from the original
4. Required hardware, such as the CD or DVD drive, is not working
5. You have a virus on your computer

There are a few simple things that you can try to solve this issue. All of them are simple, and you can try installing the software again after you’ve tried each of the solutions.

Method 1: Repair Corrupt Edge Files

Download and run Reimage Plus to scan and restore corrupt and missing files from , and then see if the issue is fixed if not then try the other methods listed below.

Method 2: Rename the installer

This is extremely simple, and unlikely to trigger the NSIS error, but you can try it as it has been known to help. Locate the setup file, and Right-click it, and select Rename from the list.

Click it, and press F2 on your keyboard.

Change the name to something simple which only has one word. For example, change it to Softwarenamesetup.exe. Try running the setup again and see if it works.

Method 3: Download the setup from another source

The installer file you have downloaded may be corrupted, which will give you the NSIS error. If this is the case, try looking for the setup elsewhere, as maybe some other place has a fully working, non-corrupted installer. Try doing this with a few installers if the second one doesn’t work.

Method 4: Install the software using the Command Prompt

The Command Prompt is a powerful tool, and you can use that to your advantage here. Click Start and type cmd and choose Run as administrator.

When it opens, drag the installer inside the window. You will see that the path to the installer will show up on the Command Prompt screen. Don't press Enter yet. Press spacebar, and type /NCRC after the setup path.

If for some reason, the path to the executable file doesn’t show up when you drag it into the Command Prompt (Window) then manually type and browse to the location.

Then press Enter and the setup should start. The /NCRC command will make the installer skip the corruption test, and it will continue running even if there is an error with it. Keep in mind though, that this will install your software, but if there is a serious error, it might not work.

Method 5: Check System Language

Hold the Windows Key and Press X and choose Control Panel.

From the Language pane, choose Change date, time or number formats from the left pane and then go to the Administrative tab.

Choose Change System Locale to your country's language. If the software is in a different language, then you can change the Language but that will also change Language and Keyboard layout.

Method 6: Move Installer to Another Drive

In some cases, the installer can’t be installed from a setup if it is in a specific disk. Therefore, if you have multiple partitions on your computer you can move the setup to another partition. For that:

1. Right-click on the “ (installer name)setup.exe" and select " Copy“.
2. Open the partition and select Paste“.
3. Double click on the executable and check to see if the issue persists.

Method 7: Scan your computer for viruses

If all of the aforementioned methods fail, your computer may be infected with a virus that prevents it from installing software, and until you clean it, you won’t be able to do much. You can do this with an antivirus of your choice, but be sure to run a full, thorough scan, and not a quick one, as the quick one skips a lot of files and folders which may potentially contain the problematic file which is infected with a virus.

The may be the result of a seriously corrupt setup file, or a false error message due to a bug in the operating system, but whichever it is, one of the methods above will help you deal with the issue.
