How do you know if you are fat or big boned? Analyzer scales will help you find the answer - Xiaomi Mi Body Composition Scale. It would seem that they are scales, what’s special about them? And the fact that they show not only weight, but also measure body composition using method B - bioimpedancemetry.

How much should I weigh?

At some point I realized: this is no longer possible. And he joined the gym to lose weight and give his body beauty. Quite quickly I lost a dozen kilograms, and then the weight froze. I was trying to figure out where all the results of training go, and one day I heard this opinion.

Don't worry. In fact, you are losing weight. It’s just that as you lose fat, you build muscle, and therefore your weight doesn’t change. Wow!

It was then that I began to think that there was something else in my body besides fat. And anyway, who said that with my 184 cm I should weigh exactly 80 kg and not 96? Where do these numbers come from?

It turned out that when talking about the relationship between weight and height, it is customary to calculate the body mass index (BMI). This indicator was derived by the Belgian scientist Adolphe Quetelet back in the 19th century.

According to Quetelet's formula, BMI = body weight in kilograms divided by body height in meters squared. The resulting figure should be correlated with Quetelet's table. So my 95 kg with a height of 184 cm turned out to be class I obesity.

However, each organism is individual. A thin person cannot weigh as much as a heavy-set person. A man's weight cannot be compared with a woman's weight. Well, the useful weight of a jock and the excess weight of a glutton are completely different things. And what to do about it?

And then analyzer scales appeared

These devices show not only your body weight, but also its composition - what and how much your body contains. The volume of bone mass, the level of muscle mass, the amount of fat - that's all. These scales operate on the basis bioimpedancemetry. When you stand on them, the gadget passes an imperceptible pulse of current through you. Because fat doesn't conduct electricity, the scale understands how much of it you have in your body relative to everything else.

Important! People with pacemakers and other medical devices are not recommended to use analyzer scales.

Analyzer scales are a dime a dozen on the market. There are gadgets from medical equipment manufacturers, for example, Omron BF-212. This is a completely autonomous thing that doesn't need a smartphone. There are also “smart” models. They are part of the ecosystem of fitness gadgets - Garmin Index Smart Scale, FitBit Aria 2, Polar Balance. Even Nokia released its own scales!

Of course, Xiaomi could not stay away. The company already has an ecosystem of sports devices built around the Mi Fit application - the Mi Band bracelet, the Amazfit Pace watch, and the Mijia Smart Shoes. Now the Xiaomi Mi Body Composition Scale has also appeared. Actually, I took them because they are not only “smart”, but also cheap.

What can be measured using Xiaomi scales

In general, Xiaomi has another model of scales - Mi Smart Scale. In addition to body weight, they can also measure body mass index, so they can also be called an analyzer. But this is where their measuring abilities end.

Xiaomi Mi Body Composition Scale, in turn, can measure:

  • Body weight;
  • Body mass index (BMI);
  • Volume of muscle tissue;
  • Basal metabolic rate;
  • Total fat ratio;
  • Visceral fat level;
  • Bone mass;
  • Water level in the body;
  • Body type;
  • General physical condition;
  • There are ten indicators in total. But you can see all this data only on your smartphone in the Mi Fit application. In addition, there will be more analytics and advice. The scales themselves only display body weight - in this they are inferior to expensive stand-alone analyzer scales like the Japanese Tanita.

    But in terms of design, the Xiaomi Mi Body Composition Scale puts most of its brothers on the shoulder blades. They are minimalistic, look like a fashionable modern gadget - a snow-white platform, four round metal electrode plates... and that's it. There are no buttons or displays - the numbers at the top of the platform light up only when you step on the scales.

    The body is made of matte ABS plastic. The material itself is durable, but for some reason a week later a scratch appeared on the site.

    What new things have I learned about myself?

    So, having installed the Mi Fit application on my smartphone and charged the scales with four little batteries, I stood on them. At this very moment they turned on - no other actions are needed.

    So, having installed the Mi Fit application on my smartphone and charged the scales with four little batteries, I stood on them.

    Important! You only need to weigh yourself on the Xiaomi Mi Body Composition Scale barefoot, so your feet must clearly stand on the steel platforms. Maximum weight 150 kg.

    Xiaomi Mi Body Composition Scale is paired with a smartphone via Bluetooth 4.2. There is no need to configure anything. Data transfer from the gadget to the application occurs instantly.

    The scale displays exact weight down to tenths. So my 95 kg turned into 95.7 kg. During the day, your weight fluctuates, and all its fluctuations can be recorded in Mi Fit. So, under certain circumstances, 95 kg can easily be increased to 98 kg.

    After weighing, Mi Fit issues a detailed “Body Score” report. According to five indicators, I am doing rather poorly.

    1. Body Mass Index (BMI)– shows whether your weight matches your height. In my case, my BMI turned out to be high – 28.2. The norm is 25.
    2. Body fat level– the scales counted 29.1%, but it should be somewhere around 17–20%. Mi Fit advises you to lose 6.7 kg. Hmm, not so much!
    3. Water level– insufficient. Only 50.6%. The norm starts at 55%. We need to drink more!
    4. BX– how many calories my body burns to maintain the spirit in the body. The scales measured only 1866 kcal. “Your standard basal metabolic rate is 1922 kcal,” notes Mi Fit, adding that the lower the metabolism, the faster a person gains weight and the more tired they become. You need to go for a walk after eating and go for a run at least once a week, the app advises. Well, I definitely won’t run!
    5. Visceral fat- the same dangerous one, which is around the internal organs of the abdominal cavity, and from which the belly. As many as 12 points, but it should be less than 9. You need to burn and not eat everything.

    But two indicators are normal.

    • Muscle mass– 64.3 kg. Mi Fit explains that with the loss of muscle mass, metabolism and energy consumption decrease. As a result, he becomes overweight and suffers frequent illnesses. Gaining muscle improves metabolism and reduces fat levels. Get to the rocking chair immediately!
    • Bone mass– 3.4 kg. Normal, but good performance starts at 4.2 kg. Mi Fit says it's about the amount of minerals in your bones and advises taking a balanced calcium supplement, sunbathing for 15 minutes and exercising for 20 minutes every day.

    Mi Fit conclusion: I deserve 42 points; I am lighter than 19% of people of my height and location; I have a thick build. I wanted to exhale that I was not fat, but it turned out to be the first degree of obesity. 0_o Actually, Quetelet’s calculations indicated the same thing.

    Impressions and conclusions

    Xiaomi Mi Body Composition Scale obviously coped with its task. I learned a lot of details about what was going on in my body. Moreover, to do this, you just needed to launch Mi Fit on your smartphone and step on the scales.

    Buy Xiaomi Mi Body Composition Scale on AliExpress:

    Xiaomi Mi smart scale helps you approach the issue of weight gain or loss wisely, wisely and without much hassle. The device is designed to closely monitor users' weight and sync stored information within the Mi Fit app. Mi Scales were ordered from Aliexpress, arrived in Moscow in 10 days, delivered by SPSR courier service.

    Delivery contents

    The scales are packaged in a regular square box made of durable cardboard. Design, appearance and design completely coincide with the packaging of other Xiaomi brand gadgets and resemble Apple equipment. There are no unnecessary elements on the case: fancy inserts, bright branded inscriptions, protruding parts and other things. On the front edge, only a neatly designed silver Mi logo is visible, which indicates that the scale is a Xiaomi product.
    The white scales inside the cardboard box look simple and beautiful. The top glossy surface is covered with tempered glass, which makes the scale heavier; the device weighs about 2 kg. The lower part, like the entire body of the device, is made of matte white plastic of the highest quality.

    The display is located in the upper area from the logo; in the inactive state it is not visible. The entire structure rests on 4 movable “legs”.

    Included are instructions in Chinese and a set of four AA batteries. The batteries are located separately. This is done so that the batteries do not fail prematurely.

    Smart scales Xiaomi Mi smart scale work with Android devices(versions 4.0 and higher), suitable for iPhone, from 4s models to new modifications, with iOS 7 and higher.

    Instructions for use

    Using the Mi Fit application, you can perform various actions with the scales. Above the battery compartment there is a toggle switch with three positions responsible for weight measures. Using this toggle switch, you can change the weight units:

    Right position - kilograms
    central - pounds
    left - tsing

    Don't forget to put the toggle switch in the far right position.

    To use the scales, you must place the batteries in a compartment specially designed for this purpose. After this, the gadget turns on automatically, displaying the “Hello” greeting with animation.

    In principle, smart scales are in working order and ready for measurements. You need to place them on level ground, stand exactly in the middle and stand for a few seconds. Under the glass there are 161 white LEDs. Xiaomi Scale will show the measured weight on the display located slightly above the Mi logo.

    Since the weight is displayed on the display using LED indicator with white LEDs, so you can weigh yourself even at night, hiding from your relatives - you stand on the device and see your weight in complete darkness. You can also see the data on the display of your smartphone or tablet.

    Accuracy of measurements

    Measurements are recorded starting from 5 kg, the maximum permissible weight of the person being measured is 150 kg. As indicated in the description of the Mi Smart Scale, the device accurately determines mass and gives the smallest error in subsequent measurements:

    • with a weight of up to 50 kg, the deviation is up to 100 grams, with a weight of 50 to 150 kg - up to 200 grams. In reality, the error during repeated weighings ranges from 200 to 300 grams. Experiments with weighing were carried out on different objects, and the readings were compared
      with classic electronic scales;
    • With a mass of 50-120 kg, the stated deviation is up to 80 grams.

    Synchronization and Mi Fit

    The scales can be synchronized at a distance of up to 10 meters, they even work through a brick wall.

    Mi Fit application for working with the gadget

    Smart scales are synchronized with the Mi Fit application, which is available in App Store or Google Play. Insert the batteries and download the Mi Fit app for your smartphone. For iOS owners, some difficulties may arise, but for Android users It is recommended to download from Google Play not the Chinese-English application, but a special version in Russian.

    For initial synchronization with the scale, the smartphone will ask you to enter your age, height and, surprisingly, weight! The connection process is quite simple, just launch the application by turning on Bluetooth (version 4.0 and higher) on your smartphone and step on the scale. The program will find the device and, if necessary, update the firmware.

    After the synchronization process between the scales and the application is completed, the data will instantly appear on the smartphone. You can see not only your weight, but also deviations between different weighings, a chart of weight changes and the BMI (Body Mass Index) value. After the next weighing, the information is updated and the program provides a detailed report in the form of a visual graph.

    IN Mi Fit program you can add different profiles of other relatives or friends. When you initially weigh another person, the result will be automatically recorded and linked to a specific profile based on weight and BMI value. You can easily switch between profiles and view all weighing information.

    Based on the entered age and height values, the application can determine the required weight norm. In your profile settings, you can set the required body weight that you need to achieve your goal. At each subsequent weighing, it will be shown how much you need to lose or gain to reach the set value. Mi Fit firmware and scales support many profiles enabled from one or different smartphones. This makes it possible to monitor statistics from your profile.

    Conclusion

    Smart Xiaomi Mi scales perfectly cope with the requirements. The design of the gadget is quite nice; it turns out to be an interesting, smart and convenient floor scale. The Mi Fit application shows basic information about weight and allows you to store these statistics, as well as information about the BMI of relatives and friends.

    Xiaomi mi smart can serve as a functional and useful gift, giving you the opportunity to control your health through weight, not only at the moment, but also with a history of changes. This is very important information, because health is one of the global life factors and it is extremely important to monitor it!

    Hi all. I present to you a review of the Xiaomi Mi Smart Scale, purchased at a sale on the JD.COM website for only 16 bucks with courier delivery to your door. In the review, I will show you how to use the scales and tell you how the scales distinguish between people, weigh babies, and whether they remember weight measurements without Bluetooth.

    This is the package that came to me from the JD.COM website.

    The scales were purchased on sale from the JD collection, which guarantees their originality, and it took exactly a month to reach me. They could have done it faster, but since they come with batteries, the store sent them by some strange delivery service. Nevertheless, everything arrived safe and sound, and what’s more, the courier brought the parcel straight to my home.

    JD employees don't eat their bread in vain - everything is packaged just perfectly.
    An outer rigid box, wrapped in film and rewound with tape, two layers of bubble wrap and bags of air to fill the voids so that the box with the scales does not fly around inside.

    So, we remove all unnecessary things and here it is - a box with scales.

    It is designed simply and concisely - everything is quite traditional for Xiaomi. But the cardboard here is different, yellower and of poorer quality, unlike boxes for phones and bracelets.
    This is the beauty that lies within.

    Included are the scales themselves, batteries and instructions in Chinese.

    It’s worth saying right away that this is the first version of the Xiaomi Mi Smart Scale. Now there is already a second version of these Xiaomi Mi Smart Scale 2.

    Its main difference is the ability to measure, in addition to weight, several more parameters, such as water content, fat tissue content, mass fraction of muscle tissue, mass fraction of bone tissue, and also calculate body mass index (in English BMI - Body Mass Index).
    All these readings are obtained using the bioimpedance analysis method, that is, the scale analyzes the composition of the body by calculating the electrical resistance of body tissues. To do this, on the front panel (which, unlike the first version of Mi Scale, is made of plastic) there are 4 metal pads on which you need to stand. When measuring, the scales “shock you”—passing microcurrents through your body to measure its resistance. The accuracy of this method raises big questions, because the feet can be wet or dry, well-groomed or with a huge layer of skin. And all this significantly affects the resistance and, as a result, the measurement result is completely unpredictable and can show anything, including the weather on the Moon. Therefore, I did not pursue the second version of the scale and intentionally bought the first one. Plus it is also significantly cheaper.
    Xiaomi also has a twin brother - a scale called YUNMAI, but these scales do not work with the Xiaomi Mi Fit application. That's why I refused them too.

    The top panel of the scale is made of impact-resistant glass, while the second version has plastic.
    It would seem, where is the display? But here it is - right under the glass and consists of 161 LEDs.

    Turns on automatically when you step on the scale. By the way, there is a light sensor and thanks to it the brightness of the LEDs is adjusted automatically depending on the surrounding conditions. Unfortunately, it's hard to show it on video, but I assure you, it's here and works well. When weighing in the dark, the screen barely glows, but during the day, on the contrary, it lights up brightly.
    Of course, the scales turn on and off automatically.

    WITH reverse side- 4 legs, they are also strain gauges for measuring weight.

    They can move slightly to compensate for slight unevenness in the floor.

    They are also rubberized and thanks to this the scales do not slide on the floor, but on the other hand, when you try to move them by sliding, they make a terrible sound. Therefore, I recommend lifting the scales when moving from place to place.

    At the bottom in the middle is a compartment for four AA batteries (by the way, the second version of the scale uses AAA batteries).

    Nearby is a unit switch. You can choose pounds, Chinese pounds, or as they are also called jini (1 jin is equal to half a kilogram) and, in fact, our native kilograms.

    The weight of the scale is 1.9 kg (the second version weighs 1.6 kg).
    Square scales - size 30 by 30 cm. Thickness 28 mm (the second version has a thickness of only 20 mm)
    Weighing range from 5 to 150 kg. The measurement error for a measured weight up to 50 kg is 100 grams, for a larger weight - 200 grams.
    But the coolest thing about these scales is that they, like the Xiaomi Mi Band 2, have a built-in Bluetooth module version 4.0 for synchronizing data with the Mi Fit application on the phone.
    Accordingly, for this, the phone must have Bluetooth version 4.0 LE (Low Energy).
    There are also certain requirements for the phone in terms of firmware. Minimum requirements:
    - Android: 4.4 and higher
    - iOS: 7.0 and higher (iPhone 4S and newer)
    - BlackBerry OS (in case anyone has phones from this company): 10 and higher
    Information about this is indicated on the back of the box.

    It is worth noting that the scales have a built-in memory for 16 people, which allows you to store 800 measurements without synchronizing with the application.
    In principle, the scales are self-sufficient and can be used as regular floor scales without being connected to a smartphone. So if you like their design, but don't want to sync data with your phone, no problem. Buy it. The scale will work like a regular electronic bathroom scale.
    But I am primarily interested in data synchronization in order to be able to track the dynamics of weight changes.
    To do this, you need to install the Mi Fit application on your phone and create a Mi account in it. I talked in detail about how to do this in the review of the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 bracelet.
    Let's say that you have already installed the Mi Fit application and created a Mi account.
    Open the application, select the profile tab and in the “My devices” section click “Add device”. We mentally transmit rays of heat to the Xiaomi translators and select the line with the strange inscription “Body Composition Scale/Libra”. We agree with the collection of data - click the “Accept” button.

    Place the scales on a flat surface and stand on them.
    Your weight immediately appears on the phone screen and in a second the scales will be added to the application. No additional actions (for example, touching the screen) are required.

    So, let's now go over the Mi Fit application in the part that relates to scales.

    After pairing, we find ourselves in the scale settings, where you can enable the merging of identical records, when the scales combine the weighing results of one user obtained within 30 seconds. The feature is needed if, for example, you stepped on the scale in a robe, and then suddenly decided to take it off and weigh yourself without it. In this case, if less than 30 seconds have passed between weighings, the scales will record only the last weighing in the statistics.
    Below is the item More about Mi Scale. In fact, reference Information about the scales in six animated pictures, which say that when weighing, the presence of a phone is not necessary and information about the weight will be synchronized with the phone as soon as it is nearby, that several phones can be connected to the scales, how the scales notify the user about the need for replacement batteries and exceeding the maximum permissible weight, how to switch units of measurement and how to weigh.
    This screen also displays the firmware version, which can be automatically updated when the Mi Fit app is open and the scale is nearby. Everything is implemented in the same way Xiaomi bracelet Mi Band 2, in which the firmware is updated in the same way.
    And the last point is the Bluetooth address (i.e. MAC address Bluetooth devices). The information is purely for reference and is unlikely to be useful to the average user.

    Now let's go from the main screen of the Mi Fit app to the weight section and see the details.

    In this section, you can look at the weight graph, find out how much lighter we are than other people and check whether our current weight is excessive or not (the calculation is based on height and age, the data about which we entered in the settings of our account when we created it). There are 4 buttons at the bottom.
    Zoom out - the button allows you to change the scale of the graph.
    Add weight - You can enter weight manually if necessary.
    Baby Weight - allows you to weigh the baby.
    Delete - allows you to delete the last weight value.

    Let's take a closer look at how the baby weight measurement feature works.
    We perform two weighings. First without a child, and then with a child in her arms.

    The application then calculates the difference between the two measurements.
    Since the resulting weight differs from any measured weight by more than 3 kilograms, the application understands that a new person is weighing himself and offers to create his own profile for him.

    How does the scale determine which user owns the current measurement? As I mentioned above, the difference between existing and current weight measurements plays a role here.
    I checked - by consistently weighing myself several times and increasing the difference in weight between the current and previous measurements by 1 kg. As a result, if the difference exceeds 3 kg, the scales offer to create a new user.
    Thus, if your weight has changed by no more than 3 kg since your last weigh-in, it will automatically be recorded in your profile.
    I would also like to separately note the ability to communicate with several phones at the same time. But in this case, if there are two phones near the scale at the same time, the weight will be synchronized with the last connected phone.

    I also conducted an experiment to find out how the scale works in a situation where there is no phone nearby with the Mi FIt application. We turn off bluetooth on the phone and do several weighings in succession with a small difference in weight. Now we turn on bluetooth and see that after a short time the scales are synchronized with the time application, all measurements appear in your profile. This way, you don't have to worry about having your phone nearby when weighing. The data will be stored in the scale's memory and as soon as the phone is nearby, everything will be synchronized. Great.

    That's all. I hope my review will be useful and will clarify some unclear points about how to use the Xiaomi Mi Smart Scale. For 16 bucks I think the scale is just perfect.
    The video review shows details that are difficult to describe in words (the quality of screen animation, the creaking of legs when trying to move the scales, the quality of the screen itself and some features of working with the Mi Fit application).
