Description of the Svchost.exe process in Windows XP Professional Edition

This article describes the Svchost.exe process and its functions. Svchost.exe is the common host process name for services that run from dynamic link libraries (DLLs).

The Svchost.exe file is located in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder. During the boot process, Svchost.exe builds a list of services that need to be started based on registry entries. Multiple instances of the Svchost.exe process can be running at the same time. Each Svchost.exe session can contain multiple services. Thus, depending on how and where the Svchost.exe process is run, several separate services may be running. This grouping of services provides a greater level of control over them and makes debugging easier.

Svchost.exe groups are defined in the following registry key:

Each value in this section represents a separate Svchost group and appears as a separate instance when viewing active processes. Each of these values ​​is of type REG_MULTI_SZ and contains the services running in that Svchost group. Each Svchost group can contain one or more service names retrieved from the following registry key, in which the subkey Parameters contains a value ServiceDLL:

To view a list of services running in the Svchost process, follow these steps:
