Screen diagonal - 5 inches, matrix type - S-IPS (a type of IPS matrix), resolution - 1280x720 pixels, display covered protective glass Corning Fit (analogue of Gorilla Glass), there is an oleophobic coating.

First of all, we note that the presence of an oleophobic coating in such a budget smartphone is a big plus. You will not have any problems using gestures (on devices without an oleophobic coating, the finger is constantly stuck and using Swype is very inconvenient) and cleaning the screen from dirt.

The screen itself boasts support for working with gloves and two special modes for fine-tuning the color gamut. In the display settings, you can make the color scheme warmer or cooler, and also enable “reading mode”, which softens the white color, making it more convenient to read from your smartphone. As for working with gloves, we tested this function: the responsiveness in gloves is not so high, but it is quite enough to take a call or scroll through a list of new emails.

HD resolution and S-IPS matrix have a positive effect on picture quality, the image is smooth and clear, color rendition is close to natural. The same viewing angles are typical for a budget smartphone, but they could have been better. In the sun, the display almost completely goes blind; it also has problems when reading in the dark; I would like to make the minimum brightness even lower. This indicates a small range of brightness.

In general, for a five-inch device costing 7,000 rubles, the display used here is very good.

Camera

At the presentation of the Zenfone line in Russia, we were told a lot of good things about the shooting technologies used and the quality of the camera, which made it all the more interesting to test them ourselves.

The smartphone is equipped with two cameras: the main one is 8 MP and the front one is 1.3 MP. The main camera takes good pictures in sunny weather. When lighting deteriorates, grain appears in the photo. The device has a separate night mode, which reduces the resolution of the final image but increases its brightness. We tested it and can say that the photo does look lighter, but the final quality is still poor.

The smartphone can shoot with the bokeh effect, when the entire background except the subject is blurred. For a budget device, the pictures are quite decent.

Video is recorded in maximum Full HD resolution at 30 frames per second.

Working with text - 5.0

The smartphone comes with a pre-installed proprietary keyboard, which is convenient for simple typing. The keys are large, erroneous presses are minimal, and there is a separate row for quickly entering numbers. The keyboard supports gesture input (Swype), as well as typing additional characters by holding a key.

Compared to previous versions of the keyboard, the updated one has become more convenient.

Internet - 4.0

The Asus Zenfone 5 uses a standard Android browser with several modifications from the manufacturer, it is perfect for viewing any web pages. The browser has automatic scaling when increasing text and a built-in translator. A separate reading mode is also present.

According to the results of our tests, this is one of the most convenient built-in browsers, it is perfect for both undemanding and advanced users.

Interfaces

The smartphone contains the following interfaces: Wi-Fi (b/g/n) (there is no support for dual-band Wi-Fi), Bluetooth, GPS, but NFC support and LTE is missing. The entire Zenfone line can work with SIM cards simultaneously. However, it is worth noting that the device only has one radio module, so when talking from one SIM card, the second one becomes unavailable.

Also, in our tests, the device could not re-find the network signal if at some point it was lost (for example, in an elevator or subway), and we had to reboot it or turn on/off airplane mode.

Multimedia - 3.0

We tried to play various video files on the Asus Zenfone 5: the smartphone supports only common formats and codecs, the player plays videos in high quality, up to 1080p. Among the support for rare formats, we can only highlight MKV, but the built-in audio player was unable to play AVI. There is also no choice of subtitles or audio tracks. The audio player in the smartphone plays only popular formats MP3, AAC, WAV.

Battery - 2.5

The smartphone has a non-removable lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 2110 mAh. These are standard numbers for many modern smartphones. The results of our tests are as follows: when watching HD video at maximum brightness, the device discharges in 5 hours, when listening to music - in 32 hours.

Performance - 1.8

Asus Zenfone A501CG uses Intel platform Atom Z2560 with dual core processor frequency 1.6 GHz, graphics subsystem - PowerVR SGX544 MP, RAM - 2 GB.

We tested the smartphone's performance in several simple tests. Firstly, we checked how much desktops and pages in the browser can be scrolled through - there are no complaints about the smartphone in terms of this parameter. We also tested it with modern games and can note that Zenfone 5 supports most of them perfectly; stuttering can be observed only in the most productive ones (Asphalt 8, Modern Combat 5).

Memory - 4.0

The amount of internal memory in the Asus Zenfone 5 phone can be equal to 8 GB or 16 GB, of the 16 GB version, 12 GB is available to the user. The smartphone has a slot for memory cards up to 64 GB, and “hot swap” is supported.

Peculiarities

The device runs the ZenUI shell, this is a new interface from Asus with a large number of settings. The manufacturer improved the dialer (Russian letters appeared in it), added its own keyboard, installed several additional functions into its own browser, in general, did a great job of adapting the shell to the user’s needs. In our opinion, ZenUI can compete on equal terms with the more famous Samsung TouchWiz and HTC Sense.

Competitors

In the spring of 2015, the price of the Asus Zenfone 5 (A501CG) smartphone is approx. 12,000 rubles. For this money you get a smartphone with a high-quality screen, good performance, high-quality body materials and a good camera.

The closest competitor in terms of characteristics is Huawei Honor 3C, it has a better display and dimensions, but the model also costs 2,000 rubles more.

We think that for the money, the Asus Zenfone 5 is an excellent offer for users looking for an inexpensive but high-quality smartphone from a well-known brand.

Yandex Market

Cool smartphone, the price is good. There are a bunch of different settings and there are quite a few of them in the camera. Everything works quickly. Possibility to use 2 microsims. I was pleased with the purchase and have no regrets. The battery is a separate conversation, I personally adapt (the volume should be at least 2000 only).

Yandex Market

Overall a great phone with great features for the money. Good, fast, functional Android. Intel processor Atom. Internet speed does not indicate the lack of 4G!!! It ships quickly, which is good news!

Yandex Market

Purchased in the fall of 2014. A reliable device, no serious bugs were noticed, the connection is excellent, GPS works reliably, the main camera takes pictures with a solid quad, I didn’t use the front camera, but it works, no hardware problems were noticed, although after a year and a half of use the system began to eat up too much memory. The phone is used as workhorse- communication, Internet, camera is sometimes used in black - more than 1000 pictures of text at a time - text is readable. There were practically no games; those that existed were not used, because... The phone is actually a backup for the work computer. The navigator did not disappoint. Overall, I’m very pleased; it performs its duties for which it was purchased, sacrificing the battery, properly. It was originally purchased specifically for tough work with the requirement of constant communication, stable Internet, good quality camera for taking large quantities of typewritten text. In terms of the last parameter, I am above all praise - I stopped carrying a camera with me, because the quality of the pictures turned out to be equivalent, the speed of work on the phone was equal to the tower. If it is possible to replace the battery (and, ideally, increase its capacity), the device will not have a price. Update as of July 16, 2019: I changed the battery. It would be better not to change it. In April 2019, I began to lose contact. Without the book case, the problem was solved, but, as a result of the carelessness of today's owner, the screen was broken. But this didn’t kill ICQ, everything works.)) Compared to Samsungs of at least the A and J series of 2016-2018. The camera turned out to be fantastic.

Yandex Market

I still use this model, no complaints.

Yandex Market

I bought it in 2014 with money from my birthday. Cost about 4000 rubles. I bought it just before the infamous price increase, which has still not changed, but continues to grow spasmodically. For the money, this is quite a good device, even today it works quite well. I was surprised when I later learned that the processor has not 2, but 4 threads. Kvalki, of course, were ahead of them, but in the price category at that time, it seems, not so. But the video chip failed. PowerVR, unfortunately, is poorly supported by developers, which is why we don’t have the best results in games. But even at that time, the “scourge smartphone” was not considered at the level of modern Xiaomi. In general, not counting the video chip, almost complete analogue budget mid-range Meizu and Xiaomi. Yes, there are fewer cores, fewer threads, but the cores and frequencies are not the most important thing here, but the joint work of the RAM and processor. And here, with the middle models of the ZenFone series, it seems to me that it’s better. I was pleased with the communicative support with the use of a translator. :-D But they communicate normally in English. :-) And as a bonus: I brought it to the SC after more than 2 years. :-) But the Meizu M5 has less than six months of warranty (well, at least they provided a warranty).

In general, the phone is not bad, it has excellent characteristics and design, but I only had it for 2 months. One fine day I rebooted right in my hands - I lost the network and both IMEI. Asus service in my city is on board and they say there are no spare parts... I'm waiting until I get to Moscow... and by the way, people, the percentage of defects in this model is huge, try searching... I just found it after the fact. ...with the same problem as mine, I found 20 more people, no one knows what to do

I took one of the first batches, even before the start of official sales in Russia for 6990. At this price the phone is interesting, for over 10000 it’s absolutely NOT, taking into account the imminent appearance of Zenfone 2, even more so NO and NO. On the plus side - good screen, speed of operation, excellent software, manufacturer support - they cut and change something, but the fact that everything works out of the box is a fact, it works well - a fact, you don’t particularly feel the thickness. Updates arrive, are installed and don’t strain your brain. There are some disadvantages. The lower insert, as well as the frames along the entire front part, could be made smaller (see Zenfone 2), nothing prevented us from doing this right away, the same can be said about the thickness in general - it could be thinner. The side edge along the edge on the side of the phone is too flimsy - it wrinkles and bends and marks remain. The glass itself does not suffer - it all looks strange. He fell more than once - intact. The insert bears a mark from the concrete, but is intact. Once they bent it by accident, stepping on it in the center - they bent it back and that was it. But strength is not his strong point. The battery could be larger, but it is no different from all phones. Will do P.S. I changed the screen with the front panel myself 2 times, it’s very easy to do. I cleaned everything from oxidation once. Changed the microphone. I changed the buttons on the side. Changed everything back cover assembled. Software updates stopped after updating to Android 5.0. Built-in programs are updated constantly, but they are already oriented to newer versions of Android and new features do not work at all.

Accelerometer(or G-sensor) - sensor of the device’s position in space. As a main function, the accelerometer is used to automatically change the orientation of the image on the display (vertical or horizontal). Also, G-sensor is used as a pedometer, it can be controlled various functions device by turning or shaking.
Gyroscope- a sensor that measures rotation angles relative to a fixed coordinate system. Capable of measuring rotation angles in several planes simultaneously. A gyroscope together with an accelerometer allows you to accurately determine the position of the device in space. Devices that use only accelerometers have lower measurement accuracy, especially when moving quickly. Also, the capabilities of the gyroscope can be used in modern games for mobile devices.
Light sensor- a sensor that sets the optimal brightness and contrast values for a given light level. The presence of a sensor allows you to increase the battery life of the device.
Proximity sensor- a sensor that detects when the device is close to your face during a call, turns off the backlight and locks the screen, preventing accidental clicks. The presence of a sensor allows you to increase the battery life of the device.
Geomagnetic sensor- a sensor for determining the direction of the world in which the device is directed. Tracks the orientation of the device in space relative to the magnetic poles of the Earth. The information received from the sensor is used in mapping programs for terrain orientation.
Atmospheric pressure sensor- sensor for precise measurement of atmospheric pressure. It is part of the GPS system, allows you to determine altitude above sea level and speed up location determination.
Touch ID- fingerprint identification sensor.

Satellite navigation:

GPS(Global Positioning System - global positioning system) - satellite system navigation, providing measurement of distance, time, speed and determining the location of objects anywhere on Earth. The system is developed, implemented and operated by the US Department of Defense. The basic principle of using the system is to determine location by measuring distances to an object from points with known coordinates - satellites. The distance is calculated by the delay time of signal propagation from sending it by the satellite to receiving it by the antenna of the GPS receiver.
GLONASS(Global Navigation Satellite System) - Soviet and Russian satellite navigation system, developed by order of the USSR Ministry of Defense. The measurement principle is similar to the American GPS navigation system. GLONASS is designed for operational navigation and timing support for land, sea, air and space-based users. The main difference from the GPS system is that GLONASS satellites in their orbital motion do not have resonance (synchrony) with the rotation of the Earth, which provides them with greater stability.
