Browsers Mozilla Firefox And Google Chrome blocked Flash player, with the help of which electronic courses and other interactive content are played on the Internet. What are the consequences of abandoning Flash for e-course developers and how can they protect their content from periodic blocking by browsers? First, a little background.

“Mobile technologies mean low power consumption, control using touch screens, as well as open web standards. By all the above criteria, Flash definitely loses.” - Steve Jobs, 2010

Also, Internet fraudsters can take advantage of the Flash plugin's security vulnerability. The weaknesses were discovered during the recent leak of a secret document listing critical vulnerabilities. The reaction of the largest companies, concerned about the safety of their users’ data, followed immediately.

Flash is blocked by Mozilla Firefox browser

Earlier this week (July 14, 2015), Mozilla decided to block the Adobe Flash plugin by default in all versions Firefox browser. Playing .swf and .flv videos has become impossible due to discovered plugin vulnerabilities. The list allows you to commit Internet crimes by installing malware for identity theft.

The Adobe team quickly responded to the problem, and already in the corrected version (18.0.0.209) these vulnerabilities were eliminated, so updated Flash plugin now works again in Firefox (39.0).

When planning a new Flash project, it's worth considering whether the plugin will be blocked again in some browsers.

Facebook demanded to know the shutdown date for Flash

Facebook's new chief security officer, Alex Stamos, called on Adobe to quickly shut down the Flash project and set a final date for all browsers to remove Flash Player from the list of supported plugins.

One way or another, Facebook users are not recommended to use this technology for security reasons, despite the large number of Flash games that are available on this social network.

YouTube stopped supporting Flash in 2015

Earlier, in January of this year, the largest service for storing Flash video stopped playing videos in the .flv format, completely switching to HTML5 standards (.mp4, .webm, and .ogg).

It is still possible to upload an .flv file, but this video will be played for other users in .mp4 format. Only as an exception, to maintain compatibility with older browsers that do not support the HTML5 format (for example, IE8 and below), Flash Player will be used to display the video.

What should iSpring users and everyone else do?

Use only those e-course creation programs that allow you to create content similar to HTML5, otherwise your ideas are in danger of dying along with Flash.

Fortunately, iSpring programs of the latest 7th version are equipped with additional parameters publications that will help you make content compatible with any system, regardless of whether Flash Player is blocked on this moment or not.

What is the technical difference in playing interactive content in different formats?

  • Flash- a video in .swf format (presentation or course) is played using a closed Flash plugin, which is a patented property of Adobe.
  • HTML5 a web page (presentation or course) is played using an Internet browser and uses open technologies available to all developers (HTML, CSS, JS).

If you publish only in Flash format, Mozilla browsers Firefox or Chrome, instead of the course you created, the following message may appear:

Solution

When publishing, use convert mode For mobile (HTML5), or Universal (Flash, HTML5).

Thus, the electronic course or presentation you created will be played on everyone mobile devices and computers even without having Adobe plugin Flash. Using universal mode, the content will also be played by legacy browsers such as Internet Explorer 8.

Flash life story

Many years have passed since the release of the first version of Macromedia Flash Player, which later became the property of Adobe. Back when most internet users used a 56 kbps modem, when YouTube service there was no trace of it yet, Flash pumped up the Internet by 200%. The first ones appeared animated.swf videos, and then entire websites made in Flash. In the last 10 years Flash technologies successfully used by game and content developers.

But despite its success and widespread use, Flash began to actively lose ground in 2007, largely due to Apple's decision not to support this PC technology on iPhone smartphones.

From Steve Jobs' 2010 letter, “Thoughts on Flash”:
“Flash was developed during desktop computers, controlled by mouse. This is a very successful Adobe business, and their desire to enter the mobile platform market is understandable. However, mobile technologies include low power consumption, touch screen control, and open web standards. By all of the above criteria, Flash loses.”

For 13 days two soldiers held a perimeter defense in a tank that sank in a swamp! On the cold day of December 17, 1943, there were fierce battles for the village of Demeshkovo near the town of Nevel, Pskov Region. The 328th Tank Battalion, which was part of the 118th Separate Tank Brigade, tried to recapture it from the Nazis. The Germans knocked out six of our tanks. And the seventh, in the heat of the offensive, fell into a snow-covered swamp about a hundred meters from the village. Trying to capture the T-34, the Nazis launched several attacks that day. The crew and the infantrymen who remained near the tank courageously fought off the enemy, but the forces were unequal. Under the cover of darkness, the machine gunners retreated, taking with them the seriously wounded Lieutenant Tkachenko. The driver-mechanic Bezukladnikov died. Only 18-year-old Komsomol member Viktor Chernyshenko remained in the tank. Senior sergeant Alexey Sokolov, a native of the village of Petrovka, Lekarevsky village council, Asekeevsky district, volunteered to help him. He was an experienced fighter - he fought with the White Finns on the Karelian Isthmus in 1939 - 1940, fought at Stalingrad, burned in a tank twice and was considered the best driver of the unit. The "Thirty-Four" was firmly entrenched in the quagmire - it was not possible to free it. And the small garrison steadfastly repelled the fierce attacks of the fascists one after another. Having brought them to close range, two tankers struck the enemy with machine-gun fire, fortunately there was a lot of ammunition. The Germans launched several attacks during the day and tried to take possession of the steel fortress under the cover of darkness. But Chernyshenko and Sokolov did not give up. Having lost hope of taking the Soviet tank and its crew, the Nazis began direct fire at it from their guns. One of the shells pierced the armor and wounded the guys. But they continued to repel German attacks. On the twelfth day the shells and cartridges ran out. Bleeding, frostbitten, hungry tankers held on with all their strength. Victor threw three grenades at the fascists who had gotten close to the tank. The surviving Germans fled. The tankers put the last grenade aside as a last resort... On the thirteenth day, December 30, our troops broke through the enemy defenses with a powerful blow and captured the village of Demeshkovo. Approaching the ravine where our T-34 was stuck, the soldiers discovered many corpses of the Nazis. Two completely exhausted, frostbitten tank crews were carefully removed from the tank. One of them was unconscious, the other muttered something, but also fell into unconsciousness. Chernyshenko underwent several operations. In the hospital, while he was still in bandages, the Order of Lenin and the “Golden Star” of the Hero were attached to his tunic. It was not possible to save Senior Sergeant Sokolov. He died on December 31 without regaining consciousness. He was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union posthumously. He was buried in the same place where he fought bravely. Ibid. local residents erected a monument reminiscent of the feat of the tank crews. And the Lovetskaya secondary school, located seven kilometers from Demeshkov, began to bear the name of Hero of the Soviet Union Alexei Sokolov. A guy from the Orenburg outback was forever enlisted in the regiment in which he served. On the eve of the Victory Day, May 6, in the Asekeyevsky district, in the courtyard of the Lekarevskaya secondary school, which since February 2009 has officially been named after Alexei Sokolov, a meeting was held dedicated to the opening of a memorial plaque in memory of the fellow countryman-hero. On a May morning, Lekarev’s teachers and schoolchildren, who are now rightfully called “falcons,” as well as local residents, including those who survived the war, gathered here. School director Vasily Lebedev opened the celebration. The hero’s nephew Sergei Sokolov and Great Patriotic War participant Gennady Glazunov, who once piece by piece collected material about our heroic fellow countryman for a documentary story, removed the white canvas from the marble plaque installed at the entrance to the school.
