Starting in April, NTV-Plus LLC will begin broadcasting three TV channels in ultra-high definition (Ultra HD) in the Far Eastern Federal District, Siberia and the European part of the country. The operator claims that it will be the first to launch 4K broadcasting throughout Russia, from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok. NJSC "National Satellite Company" (brand "Tricolor TV") began broadcasting in UHD format back in November 2015, but it does so only to the European part of Russia (from the Express-AMU1 and Eutelsat 36B satellites). PJSC Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has so far launched only test broadcasting of one TV channel in UHD.

“Three channels in UHD format will be included in the basic package, at no additional cost. They will be available from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok,” said NTV-Plus General Director Mikhail Demin, speaking at CSTB 2017. At the first stage, in mid-March 2017 4K broadcasting will become available to subscribers of the operator in Siberia, from April - in the Far East, and before the May holidays - in the European part of the country, thus covering all of Russia with ultra-high definition channels.

NTV-Plus has always been a leader in innovation. We were not the first in Russia in Ultra HD, but we are the first to offer 4K throughout the country, from Kaliningrad to Chukotka,” said the operator’s technical director Sergei Stavropoltsev. “According to our data, only nine operators in the world offer Ultra HD 4K content.” He believes that initially a small number of subscribers will connect to Ultra HD, but this technology will subsequently become a sales driver.

As Sergey Stavropoltsev says, to broadcast the signal in Ultra HD, NTV-Plus uses one transponder on each of the satellites used - on Express-AMU1, Express-AT1 and Express-AT2. Sergei Stavropoltsev did not answer the question about the compression technology used, but judging by the fact that three channels fit into one transponder, the company used HEVC compression (in MPEG-4 one TV channel in 4K can be transmitted in one transponder).

Sergey Stavropoltsev does not disclose which three UHD channels will be included in the basic package. “Yesterday a force majeure event occurred, and the domestic 4K channel, with which we agreed, left the agreement with NTV-Plus. Therefore, in March we will start with two Ultra HD channels, and in April we will add a third,” he explained. To watch UHD, you need to buy the NTV-Plus CAM module (for 2,990 rubles) - the operator does not yet have a 4K set-top box.

In addition to the federal launch of broadcasting TV channels in UHD format, NTV-Plus is strengthening its presence in Siberia. If previously the operator rented five transponders on the Express-AT1 satellite, now it is eight. "This will increase the number of TV channels from 85 to 132 in basic package. And the total number of channels from NTV-Plus in Siberia will increase from 120 to 170,” said Sergei Stavropoltsev. Subscription fee for residents of Siberia will not change and will be 149 rubles. per month. In April, NTV-Plus will begin broadcasting in the Far East. For subscribers with regular satellite dishes and standard format receivers, the service, unfortunately, is not yet available.

Ultra HD is an interesting new product that delights with ultra-high image performance and realistic sound. The downside is that it is available to a fairly limited number of subscribers.

Despite the fact that there is no official information from the operator yet, it should be announced that the number of NTV-Plus TV channels broadcast in ultra-high definition standard has increased. Now this Russian satellite operator has three 4K TV channels at once. All of them are included in the “Basic” package, but only one of them is of Russian origin.

A new addition to the operator’s offer is the Festival 4K TV channel. It is assembled in the image and likeness of other “hodgepodge” TV channels, viewing of which will be interesting only to lovers of beautiful pictures and owners in English.
To be fair, it should be noted that the channel, new to the Russian market, has a music and entertainment focus. Therefore, on air you will be able to see mostly musical programs that generally do not need translation.

Considering that the content of the channel will be of interest to a very narrow audience, it is unlikely that its appearance will somehow affect the attractiveness of the package as a whole for potential subscribers of the operator. But the fact that the “Basic” NTV-Plus package now includes three channels in ultra-high resolution video signals is a pleasant addition to the TV menu for existing subscribers of the operator who have UHD TVs.
