Our second attempt to settle in Puerto Vallarta ended as unsuccessfully as the first. And, if the first attempt ended with the fact that we decided not to go there at all, then the second time I still wanted to try to live there and understand why so many people adore Vallarta.

We arrived there in early October - it seems like it’s not the hottest (April - September), but still not the hot season (December - May). I didn’t want to come at all in December, because a complete ambush begins with budget housing - all American and Canadian winterers sweep away everything like locusts. By the way, about the Canadians - I got into a conversation with one pensioner who claimed that for the Mexicans, "Gringos" are exclusively Americans, but not Canadians. To be honest, I really doubted his words, because I thought that they called all white people “gringo”. Do you happen to know the correct answer?

In general, we arrived in Puerto Vallarta and immediately began to act according to the already worked out scheme - you check into a hotel / Airbnb and look for long-term housing and a school. Usually everything is within a few days, but not in Puerto Vallarta….

It turned out that Puerto Vallarta has its own specifics:

  • The city is quite large and very stretched along the coast.
  • Because of the long distances, taxis are very expensive.
  • Walking is unrealistic due to distance and heat
  • Everywhere (to school, to the beach, to clubs, to visit) you have to travel by car

And we flew to Mexico by plane, and decided to leave the car in California ... That was a big mistake, so traveling around Vallarta at + 32C and high humidity was exhausting in earnest!

Where do people live in Puerto Vallarta?

For the first time in Vallarta, we saw fenced and guarded condominium complexes (in Vallarta they are called "koto"). On the territory of these complexes there are usually well-groomed paths, beautiful vegetation, a swimming pool and a playground. Apparently, this is a new trend in Mexico, because such complexes are growing like mushrooms in almost all cities. The houses / condominiums in these complexes are usually all of the same type - with the same layout and decoration, most often the most primitive - white walls, white tiles, the cheapest plumbing. And then the owners either rent it out without furniture, or finish it to their taste. Surprisingly, some houses in Puerto Vallarta don't even have air conditioning! How can you live there in the summer, when even in winter you need it??

In general, we also wanted to live in such a complex - but what? It's good - the pool and playground are right on the spot, and there are also children around. And we began to travel, look, search.

How much does a furnished 3 bedroom house in a gated community in Puerto Vallarta cost?

Prices vary quite widely, but often due to the fact that agents inflate prices for short-stay tourists. If you rent a house with a contract for a year, then the cost is significantly reduced. From those houses that we saw prices average per month were from $400 to $850(and higher). Those that were cheaper were farther from Puerto Vallarta (in Nuevo Vallarta), the most expensive apartments and houses were in the tourist area of Marina, where cruise ships arrive. This price usually does not include electricity, because air conditioners can burn a lot.

What did we find in Puerto Vallarta?

We traveled a lot of complexes found that for some reasonin each such complex (koto) lived one family of Americans with children. The rest are all Mexicans. Don’t think that we are some kind of racists, we don’t mind being friends with Mexicans (oh, Spanish would be better!), But with Americans, and indeed with white people in general, it’s still easier - in addition to the lack of a language barrier, we have a similar mentality, habits, culture.

I really wanted to settle all these families in one complex, so that we would all visit each other, and our children would play together!! Well, all right, these are just dreams - after all, there were reasons why each of the families chose this or that complex ....

And we narrowed the circle of searches to one complex, where one family lived, with whom we became very friends. We called several agents who offered houses there. Of course, if it was in the USA, then we would most likely see all the houses on the same day, but this is Mexico. The law of “manyana” works here, which does not translate “tomorrow” at all, but means “not today”. So it took us 3 days to see 3 houses. At the same time, we lived in a hotel and paid for each night ...

One house was semi-furnished and was right on the edge of the complex, so open window I would have to listen to trucks and motorcycles. When we told the agent about this, she began to ask the hostess if this noise interfered with us, and suggested that we simply not open the window ...

While inspecting another house, at the appointed time, another family came to inspect the same house. Where is my bulging eyes emoji? Well, who does that? Well, this is just the beginning… The house looked like someone was living there, but the agent was not sure about this even after calling the landlady, who herself did not know if her house was rented out or not! How? How is this possible?!?!

Living room in a typical condominium in Puerto Vallarta

The third house was quite decent, and after seeing it in the morning, we decided to move into it. The agent promised to have him ready for the evening, but as is customary in Mexico, nothing was done. Another night at the hotel. The next morning, again promises, of which only one was fulfilled - the house was cleaned. The fans didn't work, there were no bed linen and towels, the toilet was cracked.... This is just what caught my eye, but how much of everything that is found after the settlement? But the agent stubbornly wanted a deposit and the first month of payment. But we are scientists, we know that if they are paid, then they will not have any incentive to repair something at all :).

My birthday was approaching and I wanted something special, and there was absolutely no desire to spend this day in Puerto Vallarta, arguing with agents :). In the end, we spit on everything and decided to leave for a couple of days in the town of Yelapa. This is a village that is located on the territory of the national reserve, and can only be reached by boat. There we spent the most wonderful two days, where both children had chickenpox :))) And at the end of the second day, my husband and I decided to leave Vallarta for where we already lived a couple of years ago.

On the way to Yelapa - towards change! :)

After this decision, a mountain fell off our shoulders!!! We sailed away from Yelapa with peace of mind and the next day we were already in San Miguel. The local weather after the Pacific coast seemed like paradise - dry, warm, sunny! And what a beautiful city!! Every building needs to be photographed. We are very pleased that we decided to leave - after all, I believe in a kind of fatalism, if something does not work out, then it’s not destiny. So it is with me and Vallarta - for two weeks we unsuccessfully searched for housing, and in San Miguel we found it in 2 days!
