Installation

Installation Instructions

    Download, install and activate ‘Anti-spam by CleanTalk’.

    Enter the access key in the settings: WordPress Dashboard -> Settings -> Antispam by CleanTalk

    Make a test comment (registration or message via contacts) with email [email protected] . You should see a message: Forbidden. Sender blacklisted.

    Ready! The plugin is ready to use.

Video instruction - Installing an antispam plugin on WordPress.

Important! To test anti-spam protection, you need to submit from the site as a visitor (log out of the WordPress admin area) because the plugin does not check the actions of administrators.

How to configure the plugin for the WPMS version?

In the WordPress MultiSite version, you can switch the plugin to use a global access key. In this case, the plugin will not show the field for entering the key in its settings and will not display a banner about the trial license in the administrative part of WordPress. To do this, define a constant in the wp-config.php file before the lines with database constants:

Define("CLEANTALK_ACCESS_KEY", "place your key here");

Do this before activating the plugin. If the plugin is already activated, deactivate it, add the code and activate it again.
Now all child sites will have this access key.

Spam protection management and control

Check external forms

If your website has forms for submitting data to external sources, you can enable the "Protect External Forms" option. In this case, if the plugin determines that the current message is spam, the form action will be temporarily replaced with your current hostname to prevent false data from being sent to an external source.

Reviews

I"ve been using Cleantalk to stop spam registrations for a few months now and can"t tall you the headache it"s saved me! Recently added their security and it"s blocked some interesting things that we had no idea were happening. People trying to hack an old admin account, brute force attacks trying to hack a non-existent account, WOW!

I came looking for a new spam filter since my old spam filter plugin was giving me support grief. This looks to be what I need. I added the trial today and it already blocked 7 spam attempts from contact 7, so I sent in my official purchase for three years. I needed a spam filter that works with WooCommerce and this seems to fit the bill. Keep up the good work!

WordPress is one of the best blogging CMS designed for webmasters. And most importantly, the content management system is distributed absolutely free of charge. One of the most pressing problems for website owners is annoying WordPress spam, which very often causes a lot of difficulties.

I want to introduce you to 11 plugins that effectively combat the problem of spam and are distributed absolutely free. WordPress Spam Protection using plugins is most effective.

All these methods for solving the spam problem are good, but there is another way that we managed to find. The solution turned out to be even more interesting and universal. No plugins are used to protect WordPress; all you need to do is tweak the program code. Testing took 48 hours and no spam managed to escape.

In standard assembly WordPress spam protection uses the “Akisment” extension. Honestly, I don’t understand why users love this plugin. It's better to remove it immediately. Spam on WordPress not uncommon, but the plugin doesn’t work properly. The plugin has a lot of shortcomings; very often normal comments are filtered out as “Spam”. Let's look at the most popular anti-spam plugins.

As noted earlier, this option is not the best. This is the default solution for all WordPress blogs. It is included in the standard installation package of the content management system. The developers of the plugin were the same people who initially worked on the WordPress CMS itself.

The Akismet extension interacts with all added messages and filters out junk containing active links. In fact, it turned out that the solution is not the most attractive; the plugin works crookedly.

Among the worthy anti WordPress spam extensions include the Antispam Bee plugin. It easily evaluates and recognizes all comments that contain spam and stops any attempts to publish it. There is an option to approve new comments. There is Gravatar check, IP and other goodies. All attempts to spam will be in vain.

Subscription to the plugin is available in 2 options: paid and free. For the first subscription option you will have to pay 15 US dollars. For some, the amount is significant. The difference between the free and paid versions is the presence of settings; in the free version, everything happens automatically. The paid version gives you freedom of imagination: filters, safe words.

In fact, the plugin turned out to be one of the best in its segment on WordPress.

We invite you to pay attention to this universal solution for website spam protection. Here, the fight against spam comes down not only to comments, the program monitors the registration of all suspicious users, monitors spam messages in feedback and other things. There is no CAPTCHA here, the user does not feel discomfort when using the extension. Tracked spam via wordpress feedback form.

WP-SpamShield integrates perfectly with BuddyPress, Contact Form 7, bbPress, Gravity Forms, WooCommerce and other extensions.

Perhaps one of the best WordPress protection systems against annoying spam. Spammers will not pass by, even if there is no captcha. The plugin includes filters with simple settings, and the plugin itself is outrageously simple.

WP Anti Spam Plugin

This filter works with email, IP addresses and usernames. You can adjust the number of characters in a comment. You can easily filter out comments with active links. The extension has the ability to configure stop words.

The cost of this pleasure is 12 US dollars. This plugin has additional functionality. In addition to protection against spam, here you will find protection from attacks and malicious bots. You can set a limit on the number of requests for a specific IP address. If you try to bypass the protection, the bot will immediately be automatically redirected to the page with the captcha. You can block a suspicious IP address.

The principle of operation of the stop filter comes down to using Captcha. A real person must confirm that they are not a bot. And I would like to say that in the modern age, it has become fashionable to protect the most with the help of captcha. Not all webmasters are ready to give up such an effective and reliable solution.

There is no captcha protection here. Such solutions are now the most promising and innovative. Developers are trying to implement hidden protection that is invisible to the eyes of the site user.

The extension is able to control the number of blocked correspondence and monitors spam using feedback. The plugin monitors the registration of WordPress user accounts. Compatible with the WooCommerce online store extension.

To protect against annoying spam, 2 methods are used. It is possible to deactivate the “URL” field in the user registration form. Spam addresses are often entered here. In the second case, stop words are used, acting as markers for the system.

This plugin also lacks the usual Captcha. But this does not in any way prevent it from successfully dealing with spam in the registration form, comments, feedback and other places. There is a built-in function to automatically block IP addresses detected in spam.

But there are many people who like to ruin other people's work or demonstrate their superiority. Today we will talk about spammers, they can cause you real trouble when you start your blogging journey.

Conclusion
This is a list of the best free WordPress plugins to protect your blog from spammers. Not included in this list Akismet, it is not free for commercial blogs. Many blogs are trying to make money, for this reason, this list includes only those plugins that are completely free. In addition, it filters too much. Often a lot of good comments end up in spam, and on some blogs, these could be potential customers who, without waiting for a response, will leave and never return.

I personally use a long-proven method To view the link you must:

" The second plugin is definitely better, but it does not work correctly in some templates. Before writing this article, I had this particular plugin installed.

This is a good plugin, but I found another way to protect my blog from spam. This method allows you to install WordPress protection without any plugins at all, but you need to do a little digging in the codes. I tested this method for two days, and not a single spam was leaked.

If you have the plugin installed on your site Akismment”, which bloggers are still writing about, then I would advise you to get rid of it. I can’t understand what good they found in him?

This plugin is not finalized, and normal comments sometimes end up in “ SPAM", so you should always keep an eye on this. If you don’t like fiddling with codes, then why don’t you install the plugin “ Invisible Captcha"? This plugin is really good, although I have never seen anyone write about it. I had it installed for 4 years, if not more.

The method that I suggest you use today protects the site 100% from SPAM. That is, you set up protection once and forget that SPAM even exists. Plus, you will remove one plugin from your site.

To install and configure anti-SPAM protection, you will need to edit some template files, namely: comments.php, style.css And functions.php. First you need to find out which function displays the text input field in the comments.

Open any article and scroll down to the comment form. Right-click on this field, and then select “ View element code", Or something like that. This menu line is called differently in different browsers.

A window for web developers will appear. You will see a line like this, or similar to it.

XHTML

See also screenshot

In many templates, the textarea tag is responsible for displaying the text field. You can see this tag in the code and in the screenshot. This line should be found in the comments.php file.

Attention!

Before editing files in the template, make a backup copy of them so that if something happens, you can restore their original

To quickly edit a file, you can use the WordPress editor: “ Appearance» -> « Editor" Locate the comments.php file, and then find the line in it with the textarea tag.

To quickly search, press " Ctrl» + « F" A search field for entering text will appear, write the word “ textarea" without quotes. A line with this code should automatically be found.

Copy this entire line and paste it below, just below this line. You should get something like this:

That is, there must be identical two lines. Now we need to make some changes to the top line. For the name and id attribute, substitute the word “ main" without quotes. It should look like this:

If you want the comment box to show a tooltip like I do on my blog, then add the following to the top line:

placeholder="Enter comment text"!}

The top line should now look like this.

XHTML

We've dealt with this file. Save it.

Editing the style.css file

Now a second comment field has appeared on your site, but you may not see it if a caching plugin is installed on the site, for example, WP Super Cache, or similar.

Delete the cache, and you will see that a second text entry field has appeared on the site in the comments. People will enter text in the first field, and spam bots will enter text in the second field.

We don’t necessarily need to see the second field on our website, so we’ll hide it. In the style.css file, at the very bottom you need to add two lines

/*hide the comment form*/
#comment (display:none;)

Editing the function.php file

All that remains is to connect a filter that will check the completion of the fields. If the first field is filled in, then the comment is considered normal and it remains on the blog, and if the second field is filled in, then the comment is considered SPAM and it is deleted.

Open the function.php file and add the code to it

/*spam filter*/ add_filter("pre_comment_on_post", "verify_spam"); function verify_spam($commentdata) ( $spam_test_field = trim($_POST["comment"]); if(!empty($spam_test_field)) wp_die("spam"); $comment_content = trim($_POST["main-comment" ]); $_POST["comment"] = $comment_content; return $commentdata; ) /*spam filter*/

/*spam filter*/
