It's not so much the design of these elements, but the concept of the presentation itself. The teacher’s job is to involve students in the learning process, stimulate group work, joint problem solving and search for connections. How is this possible in the world of presentations, where an impressive list has already been prepared for every thought, and answers crawl out to every question at the click of a mouse? How is this possible among the horrifying low-quality pictures, unimaginably tasteless backgrounds and unreadable fonts of different sizes? Presentations are still stuck somewhere in the 90s, and modern viewers can only hope that maybe the next slide will be more interesting.

But: presentations have a bright side.

Perhaps there is no other so familiar and convenient tool, which makes it so easy to make content multimedia. Image, photo, video, voiceover - all this is actually added in one click; A ready presentation will be played in any school, at any conference, on any computer and does not depend on an Internet connection.

Presentations are not a necessary evil. They can be interesting, they can captivate, they can ask questions and be pleasing to the eye.

And the problem here isn't PowerPoint. You can end up with an amazingly stylish presentation in PowerPoint and a terrifying one in any modern product for creating presentations (including Prezi, which is discussed below).

But there is a problem. Here is another proof of its existence.

This is not a presentation. It is not suitable for business or education. This is simply duplicating the content of the textbook. Is there a need for such presentations? Perhaps there is. Offhand, we can imagine possible circumstances in which such despondency might be justified:

• If there are children/students in the class who do not perceive the material well by ear;
• On lessons foreign language for displaying grammatical structures or vocabulary on a large screen;
• To display visual information that is difficult to reproduce - chemical formulas, anatomical images.

And still, such a presentation is no good. If you need a formula, you need to display the formula on the screen. Who needs a sheet of text on the screen, which, most likely, the teacher will monotonously read out? And if it is on the screen, why play it out loud?

What to do with the presentation so that it is not dull?

You can already foresee objections: they say, the teacher is not a designer to create professional, polished slides. They say we don’t have enough time, so we use standard tools. Like, there’s nothing wrong with this, if something is unclear on the slide, I’ll tell you.

I would like to emphasize once again: the problem is not with PowerPoint. It’s not PowerPoint that forces you to choose a colorful background and write in red on green. It's not PowerPoint that tells you to copy an entire paragraph of text onto a slide. It's not PowerPoint that forces you to choose a sickening picture as an illustration.

And who forces us to do this? Only a habit - the same one that remained from the last millennium, when collections of clip art were brought to each other on floppy disks, there were no sensible pictures to be found, so they used what they had. For example, PowerPoint has quite nice standard templates, but we diligently fill them with information garbage or ignore them.

So, let's formulate the golden rules of presentation, which designers know very well, but which teachers forget about. These are the rules that will turn a presentation from a cheat sheet for a teacher into a tool for engagement. Your presentation should illustrate a point, not replace it. We have supported these rules with illustrations, correcting typical mistakes when creating a slide using the most common PowerPoint tools - a standard template, standard fonts and standard layouts. The proposed solutions do not pretend to be design ones; all they are designed to demonstrate is the ability to express thoughts using simple remedies without turning the slide into a Christmas tree.

Think about the composition

A slide is not a note sheet or a handout. Cut off the unnecessary, reflect on the form. The slide should attract attention. If a slide doesn't say anything important, remove it. If its content seems useful to you, reformulate it. Do you need two columns? Do you need a title?

Remove the sheets

Seriously, no one needs this. Highlight the main idea. Ask it to your audience and find the answer together. More than six lines of text turn any slide into a desert of hopelessness.

Remove lists

Bullet lists are a thing of the past. Try to devote each slide to one key idea - this way they will be absorbed better.

Remove flowcharts and graphs

They are terrible from start to finish - rectangles, fills, borders, gradients, link arrows. It is impossible to understand anything about them. Try to present the information in a more digestible form.

Avoid small parts and multi-level designs

The complex structure will take a long time to explain. If there is nothing else to do during the lesson, including a table or complex diagram in the slide is the best solution. Any complex idea can be expressed visually in a much simpler way.

Stop playing with fonts, colors, animations and images

Shadows on the text, the use of tricky fonts and their unimaginable combinations, the abuse of bold text and italics, images of low quality or full of small details - this is all from the evil one. I really want such a good deed as presentations to finally cease to be perceived as duplicating a teacher’s notes or one’s own notes for a speech. This use of presentations makes no more sense than asking people to read a chapter from a textbook and write notes in their notebooks.
